I don't know if I will change my name. I really don't want to, but my FI thinks its 'important' for me to take his name. Does anyone else think this is crap?!?!?!

Re: Who is changing their name?
I don't think it's crap, I like when a husband and wife and then eventually their children all have the same name. You become a family with FH, it's tradition to have a common name.
But that's my opinion just like you have yours.

Re: Who is changing their name?
I'm not only changing to FH's name, but I'm also changing my first name a bit.... My first name is AnnMarie but it would sound better with my new last name if I just call myself Ann - which I do at work anyway. Annie is my nickname that everyone uses outside of work...
Boy did I just ramble

Re: Who is changing their name?
I changed mine because it was VERY important to DH. For me, I could have gone either way... actually, it would have been a bit easier NOT to change it. But then things could get confusing later on when you have kids.
Anyway, it mattered to him that I change ALOT MORE than it mattered to me to NOT change it, so I did.
And it really hasn't been that hard. All I have let to do is my passport and a few other things that always seem to slip through the cracks. Once you do your social security card your license & registration, the rest is alot easier.

I'm changing it. This is one area with the wedding and marriage that I am traditional.

Re: Who is changing their name?
Yep, I'm a traditionalist. Its a hard adjustment and some times I kind of feel like I am giving up a part of my family but its just a name and that name becomes a symbol of a new family you'll be starting. My last name now will become my middle name.

Re: Who is changing their name?
I suggested to FI that I might hyphenate the two last names............. He was offended I did not want to take just his name. So i told him if it was that important I would change it. Plus I found out from people and friends who did not take the husbands last name...it can get confusing and sometimes annoying to explain to people why you have different last names. Soi told him as a wedding present I would take his name joking.....

Re: Who is changing their name?
I am definitely changing mine. I would have possibly hyphenated, but mine and FH's last name are long Italian names - so hyphenating would sound ridiculous! I'm excited to have the same last name as him, because we're starting our own family together. Why we can't both take MY last name?? That's a whole other issue - thousands of years in the making. Maybe one day things will reverse...who knows!

That was going to be my question! Why can't the man just take the woman's last name? Why is it automatically the woman who has to contemplate changing her last name? I decided not to change my last name. I have a very easy-going FI and he doesn't mind at all. However, his brother was adamant about his wife taking his last name and it's a foreign idea to him that I'm not changing my name. Everyone's different!

Re: Who is changing their name?
Yes, I am.
Only because I know in the long run I really want us to be a family - one name and all. To me, changing under one name, is a symbol of a start of a family, and not just two people living together. Since it can't be mine - i have a brother who is keeping his name, and FI has two sisters who changed it, I have to be the one to take his.
Honestly its okay with me! I just found out my last name isn't really my last name anyways! Someone in my family in Russia, didn't want to fight in WWII so they took the name of their second wife to avoid a draft
So.. oh well! Nothing to miss!

I don't think there is any rule against taking the girls name. I saw on TLC the 'Wedding story' where out of respect for the girls heritage, the husband took her name. I think its sweet. But you really gotta have a confident FH who would do that.

I did also, it was no big deal for me. I always thought that was the norm, but I guess I was wrong.

Re: Who is changing their name?
I am changing my name, but I do not think there is anything wrong with NOT changing your name. It should be a decision each person needs to make based on what they are comfortable with. Neither is right or wrong!
