I don't know if I will change my name. I really don't want to, but my FI thinks its 'important' for me to take his name. Does anyone else think this is crap?!?!?!

Re: Who is changing their name?
Yes, I can't wait!
My last name isn't so good, and his sounds really nice with my name.

Re: Who is changing their name?
I am taking his last name. My dad also has 3 daughters so the last name will be gone.
Some of my co-workers think I should keep my last name, but I can't wait to be Mrs C!

I don't think it's crap, I like when a husband and wife and then eventually their children all have the same name. You become a family with FH, it's tradition to have a common name.
But that's my opinion just like you have yours.
I agree with this. I'm changing mine...just waiting on the marriage liscence

His name privately - my name professionally!
I was thinking of doing this, but I'm thinking it might be too confusing so I may just change it to his altogether. besides, i love his last name

Re: Who is changing their name?
I know that I am going to change my name and take his, but it is still very strange to me. I know that I am going to miss my last name very much, but I think that it is important to be a family with all the same name.

Re: Who is changing their name?
I know most of us will wind up changing out names because that's the tradition. It's important to me to start a new family with the same last name, etc...but when you think about it this day in age, it's so weird that it's automatically the guy's name! I don't mean to be all feminist or anything, but it does seem a little unfair. Not many guys would accept taking the girl's name, but we're just expected to.

Re: Who is changing their name?
I am hyphenating - I would miss my name way too much if I took his name.

I'm changing my name - I know it means alot to FH. He loves it. I always tease him that he should take my last name (personally I am a bit attached to my name :(), but I am sure I will get used to it

Re: Who is changing their name?
At first I wasn't sure what I wanted to do & my DH didn't care either way. I have never really been trully fond of my maiden name but thought of keeping it because it is also my daughters last name but she is now almost 23. I thought of hyphenating but waaaaaayyyyyyy to long. So as soon as I could I started changing to his name.

Re: Who is changing their name?
I'm not changing my name. it's an obsolete practice. My name has served me well up until now and it will continue to do so. it's really important to FH and he wants me to change my name, because he always thought of that as the way it 'should' be, and he wants us to feel like on family, etc, but whenever I turn it around and say if it's so important for us to have the same name, why don't you change or we'll both hyphenate, and he says no...so why should there be such a doub;e standard?

Re: Who is changing their name?
I'm going to make my current last name my middle name and take his as my last. I don't want to lose my last name. Just like everyone else it says a lot about yourself. My last name is Italian and his is....well...'White' like the color!!!
hahaha

Go with your heart!
To think that a legacy is only carried on by name IMO is silly. A legacy is carried on by teaching your children the lessons of life that your parents teach you. To see things come full circle as a parent by watching your children start their own families is a true test of good parenting and not letters on paper.
I do have one brother and two sisters. I am just as much of a legacy to my father as my brother is. I don't become less of one if I take someone else's last name. I don't think that my sister's son is treated any different than my brother's son because he doesnt have the same last name as his maternal grandfather. He is an equal legacy as well. Think about that. Its just silly in my opinion.
Both myself and FH have very ethnically identifiable last names. It will be a phonetic nightmare for me to take his name but I will do so gladly. I can see the secretary at work just fumbling over it on the loud speaker when I am paged. Should be a real treat. I also told FH that we need to name our children with either monosyllabic first names or names that do not have s's in them or people will stumble whenever they pronounce their names.
