Who is paying for your wedding?

Original post by branflake1229

I know traditionally it's the bride's parents who are supposed to pay for the entire wedding. But seriously, who can afford to do that these days? My FH and I are looking at places and coming up with ideas with the thought that we would be paying for it ourselves so that we can stay on budget. My mom and step-dad said they would help us, but that they are not going to go broke paying for it. My FH says that he doesn't think his parents would help at all because they feel it is the bride's parents duty. Am I wrong to be pissed off about this? They have also passed comments that my parents should throw us an engagement party - obviously they are very traditional in their beliefs.
A little background on FH's parents - they recently bought a HUGE house in North Carolina, also own a town house in NC where their other son is living while he goes to school, they bought him a BRAND NEW car, and still have a house here on LI that has yet to sell. It doesn't seem to me that they're short on cash if they can do all those things.
So I'm just wondering how everyone else is paying for their wedding. I feel that in this day and age, the cost should be split between the bride and groom, and BOTH sets of parents.

Well, I'm pretty much in the same boat as you are. FH and I are paying for everything - from the reception to the shoes.

My parents (which make less money than we do and barely make their mortgage) offered to help us pay for the reception hall. FH and I agreed that we will not accept their offer since they would be paying that debt forever.

His parents on the other hand havent' said a beep about the wedding. His mom which acts sooo nice to me everytime we visit hasn't even asked about any wedding plans. ***???

So I know they're avoiding any wedding talk (possibly because they know they won't offer any help) I'm upset about it - but I'll focus on the ppl that are being supportive. I wouldn't ask them anything...just because I'm too proud.

Yep, I'm a little too proud also. My mother is 52 and has to work till she's almost 70 just to have enough to retire. She worked part time off the books till my dad passed away. I just dont want to ask her. So C and I decided to do it ourselves...I like it that way too. Shows that we are a good team financially

Fh and I are paying for everything.
My mom is paying for my dress and FH's aunt will be doing alterations, bustle, head piece and veil for me.
That's about it. FH's parents arent able to help us.

We're paying for the majority..My moms buying me my dress and my parents actually surprised me and gave me some money towards the photographer... everything else is on us..but we knew it was going to be like that and didn't expect our parents to help us because they are dealing with their own financial issues

His parents aren't saying anything at all, they don't even really seem into the wedding which is upsetting on its own...
