Who needs Etiquette? What are you doing that's 'against' the rules?

Original post by marc_rai

So I know there's a lot of dos and don'ts that we're supposed to follow, but is anyone saying. DAMN the rules, I'm doing this my way!
Okay, I'll go first:

Etiquette says: Send each adult over 18 a separate invitation.

Rai says: Damn that rule! If you're over 18 and live at home you're not getting a separate invite.

I wrote mine last week and it annoyed me to no end that in two cases, I wrote the same address three times!

Mine -- if FH doesn't give me their addresses, they're not invited.

I'm doing almost all the same things you girls are doing.

1) One invite per household...Otherwise one house would get like 5 invites.

2) No guests unless a serious relationship

3) FH is seeing me before ceremony so we can enjoy our cocktail hour

4) No calligraphy. I'm using clear labels and a nice cursive font from my wonderful dell

Etiquette says: invite all children or none.

FH and I say: screw that, we're only inviting the children that we WANT at the wedding

I feel better now

Same for us!

Also, there is a significant gap between the church and the cocktail hour and quite frankly, I don't care! We need the time to take pictures so that we can enjoy the wedding that we are paying a lot of money for!

Amen, sista!!

I'm having pics done before the cocktail hour so I can be there! I'm not missing the food -- plus, I'll say all my 'hellos' then.

Apparently having a DJ at a formal wedding is one of mine

We're seeing each other before the ceremony to take pics

We're getting married at the hall by an interfaith minister... who's a woman

No singles are getting 'and Guest'. Those with girlfriends or boyfriends are invited with that significant other named.

Not inviting OOT guests to RD

Still considering not doing RD invites

I'm sure there are more...

exactly what i was going to say

and i read that you are not supposed to put 'and guest' on invitations, you are supposed to find out the guest's name - forget it, i don't have time for that!

Etiquette says: You are supposed to be married before you have a baby

Michelle says: Why wait! Our son can be the ringbearer!!!!

Lots of people see each other before the ceremony nowadays...it's a growing trend!!!

I am definitely the #1 rule breaker.
Our champagne toast will also be a jello shot toast, not inviting single men/women with guests just for the hell of it. To expensive. Only getting invited with a guest if you are in a serious relationship, married or engaged and NO KIDS ALLOWED, except the 3 in the wedding party. I am sure there are more....

I love the jello shot toast!!! that is great!!

I'm doing this too. Almost 3 months after I booked the DJ, my father asked me when I was going to start looking for bands!! ***??? My dad was the one that helped me find the DJ that I am using! My Dad thought that I was going to have the DJ play for a little while and then have a band. I had to explain to him that I planned to have the DJ play ALL night. I'm not paying $1500 for him to play for like 1 hour. Plus I don't have extra $ for a band. My reception is only 4 hours, when did he think all this was gonna happen? Parents are strange!

1. Not everyone over 18 is getting a seperate invite.

2. Also not inviting 'guest' for singles not in serious relationship/ or at least that I don't know.

3. There's a 3 hr. gap between church and CH(only time available)...but I'm not changing the church. FH has his heart set on it.

Wow this thread is liberating. Thanks

Me too! Church ends at 4pm, CH starts at 7pm...oh well!

And to add to number 1, not everyone that lives in different houses will get a separate invite! Fi's family moves too damn much, one family in particular (one aunt) has 8 kids plus their spouses...so we're sending one invite to the aunt's house and writing '8' people on it - let them decide who's going...bad, but I don't care!

Nah. We like the 'rules'. Although I think some people are confusing etiquette with tradition.

If you mean if I am going agains't certain traditions, then sure. I am walking down the aisle alone. We are getting married at the hall instead of a church.

1. Singles 'with guest' are in in significant relationships or engaged.

2. Printed envelopes instead of calligraphy.

3. No children AT wedding or IN wedding.

The invite reads 'Mr and Ms. Paul and Patricia XXXXXXX' am not going with what the etiquette books say, 'Mr and Mrs. Paul XXXXX'
