Why are city schools open today?

Why are city schools open today?

Just like the private schools are closed the same thing should have gone for the city schools. I know the private schools are not city owned but still....

Bloomberg is a heartless *******! DH is a teacher and he had to leave at 5:30 am while it was still snowing heavily and drive to school.... I feel bad for all teachers and the students that had to go to school today....thanks mayor... you may be smart when it comes to business but when it comes to common sense, you are a moron!

its really not that bad out, espeically in the city/boroughs... by 10 there would b no point in having the schools closed all day...its much harder for parents to find daycare when the kids dont have school then to just take them there when its really not so bad and they need to go into work lol...cant close schools just cause teachers dont wanna work lol

yeah, that's what I was going to say. Public transportation is running & a lot these kids would have no place else to go.

It is not Bloomberg, NYC schools are rarely closed., even before his time.

I got into the city with no problem- what makes the commute harder that it has to are people that don't shovel!!! People need to realize if they are homeowners they need to clear the walk ways!!

It's not about the teachers, it's about the kids whose parents work and there's no one to watch them. This has nothing to do with Bloomberg - I never once in the 7 years I went to NYC public schools had a snow day and that was 1983-1990. The only reason LI schools close so often is because of the buses - the union won't drive on days they think there's too much snow.

Besides, it's not bad here.

True, I went to city schools and they were hardly EVER closed.

Excuse me but I didn't want city schools to be closed because DH didn't want to go to work. He was going in regardless. I told him not to because driving conditions were terrible, I heard there were accidents on some highways and plus he left while it was still snowing heavily. so excuse me for being concerned. In the end he said he had to go in, he never had any intention of calling in sick.

The roads where I live in Queens were quite sloppy, as were the streets in the Bronx. The street my school was on was not plowed at all.

It's Babysitting Deluxe, as one of my colleagues put it. Many of my co-workers are far away and got more snow and have their own kids who are home today. About half our kids are out and we've had to combine classes, so no one is doing much of anything.

Dh is a teacher and he is home too. It was not worth it for an accident. Bloomberg is heartless! They have to be open as my DH says becuase parents need someone to watch them all day.....

Re: Why are city schools open today?

I had always heard that they would stay open because the city schools HAVE TO be open a certain # of days for money reasons. I don't know what the details are or how true that is, but that's what I always heard. (and that's through ALL NY mayors in my lifetime)

I really didn't want him going in because I was worried about him driving while heavy snow was coming down. It's not worth him getting into an accident just because the city let city schools be open a certain amount of days. It's hard on both parents teachers I realize that. But I was also worried about DH but he called me when he got into work and luckily he made it in safe.

I am sure I am going to get flamed for this- but what makes your DH different from any other person that has to get to work? My DH had to drive 30 miles to get to his job. It wasn't a suprise that it was snowing and that he had to get to work- but he went slow and he allowed extra time...
Just because your DH had to drive to work like everyone else doesn't make Bloomberg heartless...

there is much more to the whole bloomburg being heartless thing. a looooot more! i think the fact that nyc teachers get a snow day once every 20 years just adds to the frustration. nobody wants their so to drive in bad weather, no doubt. my dh works 5 minutes away and i still worry. but there is another whole aspect to the teaching thing.
