Just like the private schools are closed the same thing should have gone for the city schools. I know the private schools are not city owned but still....
Bloomberg is a heartless *******! DH is a teacher and he had to leave at 5:30 am while it was still snowing heavily and drive to school.... I feel bad for all teachers and the students that had to go to school today....thanks mayor... you may be smart when it comes to business but when it comes to common sense, you are a moron!

I am sure I am going to get flamed for this- but what makes your DH different from any other person that has to get to work? My DH had to drive 30 miles to get to his job. It wasn't a suprise that it was snowing and that he had to get to work- but he went slow and he allowed extra time... Just because your DH had to drive to work like everyone else doesn't make Bloomberg heartless...
I agree 100% with this statement
ETA: I don't like Mayor Bloomberg at ALL - trust me I think he's an a$$ .. yet as so many other people have said, the city schools not being closed has little to do with which Mayor is in office and more to do with the way the city operates in general

OMG people here act like we got hit with a blizzard of 1-2 feet. I watched the news from this morning 6am (the time he would have been leaving).
All the news reporters are saying we didn't get hit nearly as hard as people were predicting. 7 inches TOPS!
The people that live in Westchester and up north got hit the most.

another thought...i should go clean, but i have another thought (be nice those of you who are thinking 'oh no, not again' ) but how many times have we watched the news and heard newscasters say 'stay off the roads, call in sick, don't risk driving, look at all the accidents we're catching on tape, stay home...blah blah blah. but oh, yeah, schools are open!'

I really didn't want him going in because I was worried about him driving while heavy snow was coming down. It's not worth him getting into an accident just because the city let city schools be open a certain amount of days. It's hard on both parents teachers I realize that. But I was also worried about DH but he called me when he got into work and luckily he made it in safe.
what about public transportation?

there is much more to the whole bloomburg being heartless thing. a looooot more! i think the fact that nyc teachers get a snow day once every 20 years just adds to the frustration. nobody wants their so to drive in bad weather, no doubt. my dh works 5 minutes away and i still worry. but there is another whole aspect to the teaching thing.
and what would that aspect be?

bloomburg has changed the city curriculums so that teachers are banging their heads everyday in utter confusion!!! we are getting mixed messages about what and how to teach, our classes are overcrowded (34 kids to one teacher???), testing upon testing upon testing, no discipline is allowed b/c of everything being considered corporal punishment, including having a student write a letter of apology or sitting by his/herself rather than with the table...the list goes on and in all honesty, unless you're in it, it is hard to understand. teaching is the kind of profession that can have amazing rewards...simple little rewards like kids writing a letter saying how mu;ch they like school b/c of their teacher, kids leaving at the end of the day smiling b/c they are happy!!! kids thanking you b/c you care about them! parents thanking you for taking care of their kid as if it was your own...it is an amazing profession. but sadly, the beaurocracies (sp) are grabbing that all away. teachers in nyc are frustrated...so i'm sorry if we're moping over a snow day and sound like wimps b/c we don't want to go...but the passion and the desire for a lot of teachers is being sucked out by this mayor and everyone he appointed to be in charge of the school system. i know a lot of teachers who have been teaching in nyc for over 20 years and i know teachers who are in their first year...and the feelings, the stress, the anxiety and the sadness are EVERYWHERE!!! and the kids are feeling it too. so those are some of the aspects i was talking about.

There are aspects of everyone's job that isn't exactly what they want to be doing, or what they feel they 'signed up for'. But that's just life, you deal with it and move on.
Sorry, I just feel like I hear the woe is me I'm a teacher argument way more often than I hear it from any other profession.

couldnt agree more!!! play me a violin, all jobs have moments when they suck and other days it is rewarding..no matter what the pay, or the rewards, it all has its ups and downs and thats what u sign up for when u take on ANY job!

Re: Why are city schools open today?
I think its hard to understand unless you are IN the teaching profession.
Every day teachers are involved emotionally with their students. It is a draining career, but one that is SO rewarding. I'm not saying other professions are not (nurses, lawyers, police officers, etc.), but just because the day is over at 3 (ish), you can't just go home & forget about your day. Every little decision you made plays back on you & you question choices you had made.
The new school board is testing out a new curriculum, extended day, added pressures and yet these people are not involved day to day with the students/teachers, etc. It all just seems like a big experiment.
Too many parents think it IS the teachers' responsibility to raise their child. They depend on us to teach their child manners, discipline, and so much more on top of educating their child. I have no problem doing the best I can while the child is in school, but if they go home and there is NO discipline, no sitting down with their child to go over HW, or even to read with their child, how can they expect the schools to do it all?
Believe me I am not cynical or jaded, I love my job, but I just wanted to let those NOT in the profession know how much is truly involved in 'teaching.'

Sorry but i disagree too...this isn't just a teacher thing...MANY PROFESSIONS have to deal with the SAME THINGS, SAME issues pretty much...You don't have to be a teacher to understand all of that!

yup-- I totally agree.
Mixed messages, understaffing, beauracracy, decisions made by someone who doesn't know the job & stress are common in many jobs.

I agree with you, I just feel that teachers have been more apt to complain about their jobs constantly than any other profession I know. I understand it's emotionally draining (I'm a mental health counselor-in-training so I have an idea of what you're saying), it's just that to b*tch about not getting a snow day... what is that? That has nothing to do with being a teacher, that has to do with having a job. If the roads are passable, you're expected to be there, as with every other job in the world.
I apologize if I offended anyone, but I do feel that teachers sometimes expect special things or different treatment from everyone else and it's the 'why' that I have a hard time with.
