Why are city schools open today?

Original post by bedda26

Just like the private schools are closed the same thing should have gone for the city schools. I know the private schools are not city owned but still....

Bloomberg is a heartless *******! DH is a teacher and he had to leave at 5:30 am while it was still snowing heavily and drive to school.... I feel bad for all teachers and the students that had to go to school today....thanks mayor... you may be smart when it comes to business but when it comes to common sense, you are a moron!

Remember something else, we don't get corporate Christmas bonuses either.

neither do I!

We don't get real maternity leave either.

Here too! State worker, and I believe my salary (for 12 months) is less than many districts. Sorry if I can't be TOO sympathetic about the $$, and teachers taking on a job for the summer! I work 2 jobs to pay my mortgage...But, I digress. I too knew I wasn't taking the highest paying job, and it was a choice I made, but the point is all of our jobs are difficult in different ways, and it is impossible to say what is 'hardest' or who works 'most for the least money in return.'

Speaking of christmas bonuses. My best friend called me up whinning that her and her mother got their bonuses from the DR and it was 200.00 and her mother threw it at the dr. I wanted to jump through the phone. Id be happy with 25 bucks.

We don't get a choice about whether or not to take it over 10 months or 12. Luckily for me I get checks through the summer or I would be in deep you-know-what! In fact, for my first year I was only full time for half the year, so when the summer checks were given out I slightly less than half (I don't know why it wasn't exactly 50%, but anyway). That was a tight summer.

I know 200 is low is some fields, but when you get nothing, it is nice! no Christmas party?
Even we have a lunch.

My boss's friend got a bonus of over $20,000!

we get nothing too. And I work for a large consulting company, that's supposedly doing very well right now.
and their idea of a Christmas party is a luncheon at the home office in Melville. Yeah ok... I've never gone.

meanwhile DH works for a not for profit very small company and got a HUGE bonus.

that staTement is insane...hmm cops..doctors..firefighters...ALL HARD JOBS!!! AND IT DOESNT END THERE!!!! any1 who remotely wakes up in the morning and busts there a** all day to bring home $$ to put food on the table has a hard job! dont whine and complain when you have off for 2 summer monthes...3 seperate vacation weeks..and get out at 3:00 everday!!!!!!!! obviously the take home work that u MAY have makes up for the fact that most pple work almost every month from 9-5 WITH ONLY 2 weeks vaca!!!! I think 'teachers' need to get off their high horse,

OK I will be responding to a lot of this but this has to be the most ignorant statement I have EVER read!

1) You work 9-5 I work 7-3 so the hours are different HOW?
2) Do you get a lunch? I don't on most days, if I do it usually some how involves students!
3) Can you go to the bathroom whenever you want?
4) How many ADDITIONAL hours are you REQUIRED to work UNPAID! I am not talking about take homework but hours that are MANDATORY that you must be there but yet are not paid- We do this is called Staff Developement- this is not meetings, this is someone non teachers' latest idea on how to fix the broken wheel!
5) How many supplies do you have to buy for your cubicle?
6) What do you think you would be like if it weren't for your teachers?
7) Do you ever think that teachers complain most because we are the punching bags of many!
8) If you were threatened or attacked in your office and your HR said to you, sorry you do not have any rights because the person that attacked you has 'special needs' and is protected under the Americans with Disabilities Attack and since he/she has an impairment and couldn't understand why punching was wrong, there's nothing you can do, how would you feel?
9) How would you feel if you see a child heading down the wrong directions and you called the parents to express your concerns and you hear the 'Not my child' speech

Or here's another good one- You call a parent to tell them that their child is in danger of failing and isn't doing their homework and the parents response is, 'well I don't call you when she doesn't make her bed, don't call me when she doesn't do her homework'.

Or It's not that my child isn't gifted, it's that you are not smart enough to teach the gifted class?

Or the all time classic, well I was pregnant with him while I was getting my masters, so through osmosis he is naturally brilliant, you are just not challenging him enough
(Keeping in mind that this is the 6th school that isn't 'challenging' him enough

10) Do you have co workers that can get in your face, say whatever they want to YOU with VERY little consequences, but yet you cannot say anything back?

11) As for our 2 months in the summer and 3 weeks of vacation,

1) I have not had a summer off yet- masters are required for teaching, curriculums must be made, courses need to be redefined and inservice can happen!

2) The other 'weeks off' are not by my choice! My husband can't get the same weeks off, we can't go on vacation together unless it's in the summer. But if you wanted to go on vacation January 17- whatever you can- we can't!

12) How would you feel when you see your bosses make decisions about something they have NO TRAINING in that will cause your kids stress and aggravation? But you the 'professional', who has been trained in this area, your opinion doesn't count for ANYTHING!

13) That you are always the scapegoat for everything that goes wrong! It's never the administration or lack of parental support, or funding!

I have been a teaching for almost 10 years. I love my job day in and day out. Do I get frustrated HELL YES!!!!!! Would I ever go back to the business world, NOPE! Does that mean that dealing with the crap that we have to deal with and the LACK OF RESPECT is easy NOPE!

For ANY OF YOU that think teaching is a joke or do not understand what it is like to be a teacher, FM me and I will be more than happy to have you shadow me for 1 week in my classroom. Believe me, if you shadow a teacher your opinions will change.

My SIL was the most Anti- teacher person, ah they are over paid, have all these vacations do nothing all day kind of person until she started working as a TA in a school. So ANYONE want to take me up on my offer? Bet you not!

Most teachers also work during the summer...and if we didn't get summers off we would burn out

Right, and working 50 hour work weeks with 2 weeks of vacation and travel for work... that's just about having fun right?

That's why it's called a job.

EXCUSE ME- I work WAY more than 50 hours a week! I also don't get to sit my as$ infront of a computer and chat on LIW all day. I am actually doing something!

Crap I don't get to travel for free for my job! Crap I don't even get to go anywhere other then the faculty room (Which hasn't been cleaned in 5 years) for my trip--

Ah- also a difference teaching is a PROFESSION not a JOB!!!

Next- every 'job' has 'perks' some more obvious then others!

Also do you get paid for 10 months or 12? Curious because I only get paid for 10 months!

FUNNY HOW YOU NEVER EVER SEE THREADS BASHING OFFICE WORKERS-- BUT PEOPLE FEEL THAT THEY HAVE THE FREAKING RIGHT TO COMMENT ON WHAT A TEACHER DOES BUT MEAN WHILE THERE IS NOT ONE PERSON ON HERE THAT COULD BE DOING WHAT THEY DO WITH OUT A TEACHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

there's too much ground for me to cover here

so i will politely refrain, though i do think some of your statements are false

i will calmly say that no one is denying that you guys have it tough and deserve praise. The only flaming that took place is when someone claimed that teaching was the hardest profession. That's all.

I do believe that there was teacher bashing going on in this thread. Do I comment about the perks that other jobs get but yet as soon as teaching is brought up what do you hear, 3 weeks off, summers off only work until 3. I don’t get a Christmas bonus EVER! I don’t have a phone to call people just to BS because I want to (and cellphones are not allowed to be used while in the school and there is NO reception), I have to spend almost 2k on supplies for my classroom. I have to continue my education even when I don't want to, but you know what I don't complain, this is what I signed up for! Do I have days I want to whine about my students YES! Do I have days that I hear stories that are heart breaking YES! Do I have days where I walk out and say THANK GOD I AM A TEACHER-- YES and those days make everything else worth it.

As for the snow day thing- all I can say is my district RARELY takes a snow day, if we have a delay according to the sign posted today we are expected to still sign in at the regular time even though the kids won't be in for 2 hours! Do I appreciate them when we get them- yes but do we have to make them up YES! My district has NOT taken ONE snow day this year. I have made a choice to take 1 of the days that it snowed off because I am pregnant and it was too dangerous IMO for me to drive. But I was in today!

As far as teaching being the hardest profession, no I don’t think that. Crap I would NEVER want to be a pediatric specialist and tell a parent there is nothing that more that could be done to save their child; I would never want to be a cop or a fireman. But it’s funny I don’t hear people saying, how come cops get unlimited sick days or nurses have shifts where they only work 3 days, 12 hours each? (and for the record I am not complaining about that just comparing)

Is teaching the hardest profession, nope, one of the most picked on and beat up YES!!!

ok but all of that stresses the central point of this whole thing

every job has its challenges and disadvantages

that doesn't make one harder or better than the other

Exactly that was the last line of my thread but yet people who aren't teachers feel the need to comment on our jobs! Do I comment about what you do? NOPE why because I am not trained in what you do, I have no right to have an opinion on something I don't know about!

Let's not make this 'why my job is harder / more important than yours'. Bottom line is, yes it *****, but sometimes that's the way it is. If you really feel you are in danger and cannot take public transportation, then use a sick day. This is not a competition.

100% agreed -- but i still think that the only reason people were commenting on teachers was because someone posted that it was the hardest job and people took offense

Well that person shouldn't be saying that, I do NOT agree with beautyq's statement at all! But honestly Don there was no reason for the other comments that were made! Take offense to what she said ABSOLUTELY. Point out the hardest jobs, miltary, police, paramedics, emergency room personel, firemen but there was no reason for the other comments that were made!

Jen (Mrs TC) I 100% agree. Anyone who didn't want to drive today, take a sick day!
