Why are city schools open today?

Original post by bedda26

Just like the private schools are closed the same thing should have gone for the city schools. I know the private schools are not city owned but still....

Bloomberg is a heartless *******! DH is a teacher and he had to leave at 5:30 am while it was still snowing heavily and drive to school.... I feel bad for all teachers and the students that had to go to school today....thanks mayor... you may be smart when it comes to business but when it comes to common sense, you are a moron!

Most teachers also work during the summer...and if we didn't get summers off we would burn out

Right, and working 50 hour work weeks with 2 weeks of vacation and travel for work... that's just about having fun right?

That's why it's called a job.

Thats why I edited...if you would have read it again...We do have very hard jobs...not as hard as police, firemen etc...but if you work in a bad city school you might as well be a police men...my FI has been attacked twice by students in Brooklyn

Attacked why? What caused the attack.
Im not sure why a teacher should have off today Think about the cops who DRIVE the streets all day and night they don't GET SNOWDAYS!

My dad worked for nassau county he was the guy who drove the big snow plow and guess what at 4 am when the snow started falling he would get called into work. It didn't matter the year it snowed on Thanksgiving or christmas it didn't matter that it was holidays he was still there. While his family was home enjoying dinner with out their dad and the teachers had off for days (or maybe a week). Teachers job rough yup (but so are a lot of jobs) but they shouldn't have a snow day because there is a snowflake on the ground.

OMG have you read any of the posts??

NO ONE IS SAYING THAT TEACHING IS AN EASY JOB.

We're just saying to stop b*tching and saying it's in fact the 'hardest' job (your words). It's difficult but god knows you have your perks too. You knew what you were getting into and if you hate it so much simply because you don't have a snow day today, like the rest of the working world, than find another job.

But the teachers I know on LI are making over $40,000--that's more than many professionals I know. If they choose to work for extra money, that's their choice. I'm a college administrator, don't get summers off, and work another job for extra money. Boo hoo. And what about every other profession--doctors, nurses, lawyers, bankers don't have time off to allow them to recover from burnout?

[Anyway, no one is doubting that it is a hard job. BUT you knew that going into it - no one made you be a teacher, right?

.

in all honesty, nobody who goes into the profession expects it to be what it is. i mean, i went to school, got great grades, busted my butt studying, etc. but school DID NOT prepare me for the job. yes, you expect it to be hard but you never realize just how hard it is. please don't get me wrong, i love what i do. i got a letter from a student yesterday saying that she doesn't want to leave 5th grade b/c i won't be her teacher next year. that is huge! and that...knowing that i am affecting a child's life, wow!!! but i never thought it would be as hard as it really is. i knew it would be hard, as work is. but never did i expect it to be what it is. yeah, so we're bitchin about a snow day or lack thereof, but i dare anyone to do it for a week. i've had lots of jobs...retail, management, waitress...been at the bottom, been at the top (or what could be the top for the age i was) and teaching is what keeps me happy but makes me cry! it is like a love relationship...you can't make it giving 80% or 95%. you have to give it all of you.

i know everyone's job is hard...we all get bogged down, we all have stress and lots and lots of it. but forgive us teachers if we're vocal about the negatives of the profession. but there are a lot more than the eye can see.

I am sure I am going to get flamed for this- but what makes your DH different from any other person that has to get to work? My DH had to drive 30 miles to get to his job. It wasn't a suprise that it was snowing and that he had to get to work- but he went slow and he allowed extra time...
Just because your DH had to drive to work like everyone else doesn't make Bloomberg heartless...

I was just voicing my concern for my husband. You make it seem like I said 'to hell with everybody else'... I didn't say he was the only one going to work.

Thanks for your rude reply...
