Just like the private schools are closed the same thing should have gone for the city schools. I know the private schools are not city owned but still....
Bloomberg is a heartless *******! DH is a teacher and he had to leave at 5:30 am while it was still snowing heavily and drive to school.... I feel bad for all teachers and the students that had to go to school today....thanks mayor... you may be smart when it comes to business but when it comes to common sense, you are a moron!

Re: Why are city schools open today?
But no one was putting teachers down. We are saying that there are jobs just as hard as teachers and even harder. I don't really think anyone was flaming. Just showing that teachers GET a lot of time off. Easter/passover winter break christmas break weekends (which some of us don't get) SUMMERS (and if you work in the summer for summer school you work what 4 hours?) Is it tough dealing with kids. Is it tougher dealing with high school kids He!! ya I was one once to. But because there is a snowflake on the ground there is no reason to assume that SCHOOLS HAVE TO BE CLOSED. And everytime there is a snow storm its the same thing OVER AND OVER again. My school closed... My school didn't. Its your job to go in. There are lots of teachers that arent here today why because they went to work.

wow...kinda wish i went to school but then i would've missed the pancake bunny. poor little guy
seriously though, the point of this thread (or so i'm presuming) is that nyc schools never ever close!!!! well, maybe once every 20 years. but even during the craziest of storms, while a lot of people stay home, teachers usually trudge in. but to say that teaching is the hardest profession...no it isn't. parenting seems to be pretty high up on the list, too and we don't give GOOD parents enough credit. but in a way, a lot of teachers have taken on that role as well and it is a lot. to say it is the hardest profession...no. i wouldn't and couldn't be an er doc or drive an ambulence or go diving with sharks to disarm bombs or be a cop or a fireman or even be mayor . but to those of you who don't do it, please understand that it tough to do. amazing, but no doubt about it, very tough. and a perk? yeah, vacations. but the teachers i know don't sit around eating bon bons...
we are a board that is never bored! we all have our opinions and experiences that form them. i will defend my profession. but i will not put down what someone else does. i made this choice and there are days where i think 'what did i do?' but i also hope that we all realize that we are not talking face to face and a lot of what gets said on here is taken out of context. meaning in language doesn't come from just the words, but intonation, gestures, facial expression and all that is lacking here. the flaming can definitely get out of hand, but, and i say this with all of myself, there are a ton of good people on this board that i like to visist with everyday. and if we disagree, so be it.
Very well said

I still think Bloomberg is heartless...
absolutely.
were alll the other mayors heartless too?
Ok, i just caught this. I agreed he was heartless, but if you saw my past posts I had also said that it wasn't Bloombergs fault. It has been that way since I was going to grade school. But Bloomberg is still heartless, but for other reasons... not this one.
ah, ok --I gotcha! I can respect that. He probably is .

flaming...i guess but if someone is goign to make a silly remark (even though it was taken back) like that one...It usually offends a lot of people...Which in this case it did..hence the flaming!

I think cocoa said it best when she very well articulated her points about being a teacher without making any superlative statements. Whenever you make ANY statements on this board that are like that--this hall is the BEST EVER, this idea is the WORST, this dress is the WORST, my job is the HARDEST, my job is the BEST, my DH is the NICEST EVER, my life is the WORST--you have to expect backlash. A lot of drama (and editing) could be avoided if people thought about how what they write would appear to others before they post.

Re: Why are city schools open today?
Teaching is hard....there is no doubt about it. With 10 years experience, I would love to chat on my computer and call my friends during the day. That is what MOST of my friends who work in the corporate world do. Now, granted, when they have projects, they are under the gun as well. However, what they don't need to do is play teacher, mother/father, nurse, therapist, mediator, etc. all in one day.
In regards to getting time off.....We are only paid for 180 days of work. That is all. We don't get paid any extra. We don't get overtime, vacation pay, sick leave. decent paid maternity leave, but that comes with the job.
Let's face it, yes, a snow day would have been nice, but my friends who teach in Maine, figure out how to get to work EVERY day. Snow is just a part of their lives! They just figure it out!

Re: Why are city schools open today?
Wow! This was a fun one!
I'm a teacher, on Long Island....I get paid a nice salary for my job, I'll admit it - I got lucky and got a job in a good district. And, unlike many districts, we get paid 12 months of the year, not just 10.
I love my vacations and summers (even though I teach summer school) I love snow days (like today) and I complain when I have to go in in the snow....but I think it's human nature to complain
And I agree that, for the most part, teachers like to complain more than others about things....
I think teaching is a difficult and draining job - but there are many days where i have it pretty good. And there are days when I just want to roll up in a ball and cry.
It's a job - like any other
It makes me sad when people say that teachers have it easy, but it also makes me sad when teachers make me look bad by whining about things...

LOL... its threads like these where I hope my future kids don't wind up with a select few of the teachers (or defending teachers) that are posting in here making a stink.
And not for nothing... but for a profession that gets the entire summer off... complaining about a snowflake or two gets no sympathy from me.
And based on prior LIW 'teacher activity' during the summer on these boards... its not like all the teachers are out every day of the summer buying school supplies.
I am one of those teachers who went into work today gladly, but I think I need to do a little bit of clarification.
Teachers work for ten months. We do not 'get the entire summer off'. Therefore it is not a 'perk'. We get paid for TEN months of work, NOT TWELVE and for 6 hour days not 8 or 10. Many teachers work summer jobs to make ends meet. I, for one, teach summer school. Some work at summer camps. Some work retail. Some tutor. Most of the single teachers I know, can't count on a second income. So they have to have some sort of supplementary income. I have a second job as well.
Remember something else, we don't get corporate Christmas bonuses either.
I don't complain about my salary. I knew I wasn't getting into a money making business. I do what I have to do to survive.

Re: Why are city schools open today?
My SIL was a secretary in College Point before she moved to Florida. She got paid full pay for 10 months and got paid in the summer maybe half pay. She lives in Florida now and she is on the same schedule. She gets paid for ten months and then gets something for the 2 months in the summer. I thought that when you started there they gave you some kind of an option? Neverthe less she loves her job cause in the summer she can be home with her 4 kids.
