Why so secretive about pricing?

Why so secretive about pricing?

I don't understand why people are so secretive about what they are paying for the reception per plate. I can understand nosey relatives asking, and people not wanting to say. But if someone on the forum asks you what you are paying, why would you not tell them?

I asked 3-4 people what they were paying, I decided to do it via FM just in case they were terribly concerned about privacy. Nobody wrote me back yet. I wanted to save myself the trouble of going to places that are out of my budgeted range. This is not to say everyone acted this way, quite a few people did FM me what they were paying privately without my even asking.

Is this place supposed to be about helping people out, or is it just a place to say 'We booked here, and it's so wonderful!!!'

i dont know - i never had that cant tell attitude - i am paying 70 pp at mpi and i tell people all the time - maybe some folks got a special deal and promised not to tell anyone???( just thinking - )
personally i wouldnt worry about it - a phone call to anywhere should get you their pp pricing

Do a search.... it's right above. Instead of wasting peoples time, I just enter the catering hall and sooner or later you will find a past forum that lists prices. If not then just make a new post and those that are comfortable saying will be more than happy to say. Im guessing people that got things added for free dont want to say anything so as not to ruin their freebies. We are all in this struggle together my friend.

I have done a search, I know how to use forums, but thanks for the advice. I don't need to know details, just 'I'm paying XX per person total on a friday night in July'. I don't ask for much, want to know I'll be in the ball park.

Everyone is different I guess. If you do a search on price pp you will find quite a few posts in which people tell you what they are paying. My FI and I are going w/Stewart Manor Country Club. $65 pp before tax and gratuity for Sunday of Labor Day weekend.

I agree with Oakslady, you can just make a phone call to a catering hall and ask what their range is for a given evening. They don't like to waste their time anymore than you.

Some people are not comfortable saying maybe b/c they might feel like a) they are paying too much, b) they got a good deal b/c of circumstances c) people hate to discuss money d) People don't want anyone knowing how much they are paying. They are entitled to that.

They can answer by giving a range but it is their free will whether or not they want to discuss that.

Re: Why so secretive about pricing?

Some people are afraid to say how much they are paying for a few reasons

1. fear of being ridiculed for paying too much
2. fear of being called cheap
3. fear that someone will use their name and price quote when meeting with a hall and they find out either a) they were overcharged b) they were given a deal and the next person can't get it because of the day of the week, month of the year etc.

There are some posts that are all about how much people are paying. Good luck!

That was part of my question though. What if nobody shared anything, doesn't it cease to become 'Brides helping brides'? I guess perhaps I'm just not as money obsessed as other people on here.

Certain places have been very shady as to giving prices over the phone. One such place was Atlantica.

Thank you to everyone who has FM'd me and posted about this already. Your help is very much appreciated!

I think it's because many places and couples work deals out...one bride might pay her $$ and get such and such while another bride, whose father might be friends with the catering manager could get more bang for her buck, ya know what I mean?

I'll admit to paying $53 per person BEFORE taxes and an 18% service charge. I'll also admit that my hall is doing renovations and told me that after the cost of that was figured...their pp cost would be elevated.

Re: Why so secretive about pricing?

Actually lot of people have said their prices, maybe just not for the hall you are lookignfor. that's an odd coincidence I guess.

Maybe the people you FM's aren't comfortable doing it, or havn't checked their forum mail yet.

Actually I was surpirsed people on here are so open, b/c I thought everyone was weird about money.

There was a whole 'how much does your dress cost thread' that I though people might not respond to, but people responded in all ranges.

I think It might be better for you to think about what places you want to look at first. What are you looking for in a place. Like I didnt want four walls ( I wanted windows and wanted to look out over water) If you tell us that then maybe we might be able to tell you what places and how much we are paying even though price differs depending on day of the week. Time of year time of day.

HEY! I'm one of those people you FM'd and I didn't reply cause I honestly forgot. BUT....since you raised this topic, I will just answer your FM here....I don't know for sure what I will be paying pp because we are still negotiating a price. Once I negotiate a price, I will let you know what I am paying. Once I sign on the dotted line, I will feel more comfortable giving you a price.
Sorry, I don't check my FM often...It only tells me if I have FM if I log off my computer and log back on.....

ETS: by the way: Ihave no problem sharing information with the people on this board. Sometimes I share a little TOO MUCH information....I'll let you know after I book tonight.

I think if people are not comfortable in one area of sharing, does not make the board less helpful. There are many other women on here that will gladly answer, but not everyone is, and they are entitled to that.

That is like saying if my husband does not help out around the house it makes him not helpful, there are other areas that he is helpful with.
