like others, we both have so little money to our name that it wouldn't make sense to have pre-nup

Sorry I just had to throw something in being a family law attorney! A lot of people think that it is just for things you own prior to marriage, but most of the time they are used to protect future assets you may acquire while you are married, which would otherwise be marital property.

i'm taking family law next semester. in what circumstances 'should' a prenup be used? what won't it protect against? is there any reason to get one if you are both young without major assets?
aren't some things protected anyway? what happens with cars and other stuff? i'm curious because i thought things owned before the marriage are generally yours after (unless you both take title) and things like inheritance are yours too?
how does it work?

But I guess that's an ignorant statement because that shouldn't determine whether or not you get a prenup...but we're not getting one regardless

Not here...we're both pretty much broke and call me naive but by signing that I think you're pretty much saying that you're having seconds doubts about your marriage!!!
