Would you be offended?

Original post by Miblove

Woman I work with just walked up to me and told me 'Honey....I know you're thin, but now you're wasting away'
I was like 'huh, this is me - I've always been thin - havent lost weight'
She was like 'oh, I guess I never really looked..' blah blah - you could tell she felt uncomfy
I shook it off, and laughed a little but not too much

I dont understand how ppl would NEVER dare to tell someone they're TOO FAT, but ppl would NOT hesitate to say they're TOO THIN!

I've had that my whole life now, and just gotten used to it...in high school I even had people recommend me for counciling b/c they thought I was bulemic b/c of all the food they saw me eat.

i think after those pictures of nichole richie when you could see her muscles in between her ribs, everyone has concerns about friends and family members getting too thin and being anorexic.

i hope they dont mean to be offensive but culturally it seems to be ok to call someone too skinny or thin....

i have been called both and both hurts just as much, either way, too thin or too fat....i get offended either way

I beg to differ on the part where you say that someone would never say to another's face that they are too fat.

I admit to not being skinny - I'm a street size 24 and have been for quite some time..DH loves me for who I am but I have had people (co-workers) say to my face that I am too fat.

But it's true some people will do both - say someone is too fat and that someone else is too skinny.

I've heard to my face that I am too fat so many times (rudely mind you) but I wouldn't let it bother you if you yourself are happy and can deal with who you are.

I totally hate that! I get it all the time! People have even told me I look anorexic which REALLY makes me mad. People who say that have CLEARLY never seen an anorexic person before b/c if they have, they would NEVER say it! My 'sister' is anorexic and it's so incredibly painful to look at her. She's getting better thank goodness!

It makes you want to tell these people, 'Oh, did you put on weight recently??? Oh, no? Sorry, I guess I never noticed your weight on a daily basis.' UCK!

why would she say something like that to you? Is she over weight? Because if she is she may be just a bit jealous there....

Yeah, she's on the heavier side - rude biatch she is, ughhhhhh

i'd give her a hug & say 'wasting away? THANKS!'...i don't believe in too skinny...then again prob cuz i've always been in the world of too fat, sorry...LOL!

Is she overweight?? I used to HATE that. Growing up I was rail thin and people would comment on it. People need to mind their own business.

Yeah, she's definitely on the chubby side - but that's besides the point -

I've been rail thin since the age of 3 years old, lol...my step dad called me 'bony marony'

I dont think its besides the point!!! She's probably bitter that youre so thin. Im a thin girl and I dont feel the need to tell other thin girls that theyre wasting away!

As far as what she said, I do feel its offensive because of the way she said it. I dont think anyone should ever comment on anyones weight whether theyre skinny or fat. Same way you should never ask someone if theyre pregnant!

Well, that is definitely true ... it's very offensive...believe me - I dont mind when ppl say you look thin - but to say like I'm TOO thin and 'wasting away' - that's just PLAIN RUDE - I mean, I dont even talk to her on a personal level ever - I hardly know her

I find it offensive and rude, i would never say that to someone else! i get it at work too and i ignore it and i am not super thin I just take care of myself.

Exactly - I take care of myself too ... I would NEVER tell someone they're getting fat....

I think the problem is that most people dont think saying 'you are too thin' is negative vs. You are so fat.
If someone were to tell me I was too thin I would jump up and down and hug them! But I can see where it would bother you. I dont think that was her intention though

the exact phrase was 'YOU LOOK LIKE YOUR WASTING AWAY'

i notice that people try to make me feel bad for being thin - but i love being my size - yeah im really thin - and i only weigh 90 something lbs - but i still got some curves - my waist is a 23 and my hips are a 33 - so i got some shape going on in the butt and thighs the only thing i dont like is shopping for clothes! i do think a lot of the time (not always) when people make comments like 'too thin' its so that they can make themselves feel better - like it makes it easier for them to cope - they try to find negatives in being thin so they can feel positive about not being thin - get what im saying? i truly believe that some (once again, not all) people who make comments feel that way.....unless its a compliment any other comments about weight i find tacky

wow - that's so true ...

Talk about thinness as a negative thing & that immediately makes you feel better about NOT being thin....makes so much sense!

On top of that - when I explained (which I did NOT need to explain, but did) that I was thin my whole life & that's just my body, thanks...she was like 'oh, boy a reason to hate you..just naturally thin, ha ha'
What a loserrrrrrrrr

It is being presumptuous but you cant say that half the time someone is calling someone else too thin, it isnt by a heavy person.

I havent been called too thin in a while and I miss it now. When I was younger, I would come home and cry when people made fun of how skinny I was. I would eat and eat and wear like 3 pairs of tights under my jeans. It was sooooo uncomfortable but now when I look back and I remember the people who would pick on me, they were all heavy!!

why is it that thin people think that all heavier people are just totally jealous and it consumes them so much that they are the only one making comments? how many thin people make comments about overweight people, it works both ways

I never thought jealousy played a bit - I do, however, feel that a lack of class plays a part.

I would NEVER comment on ne one's size unless it was a family member or very close friend.

I am, by NO means, sickly looking - in fact, I think I have a great shape
