yes.
I've been in that situation and the first thing i wanted to do was get rid of the stupid thing.
The 'right' thing to do would be to give it back. The ring is like a contract. If you're not getting married, give it back.

ETA:
Okay, i sort of lied. At first i wanted to sell it or throw it off a bridge.
However, after discussing it with a lawyer friend of mine i realized that in NYS if it's given as an engagement ring and not as a gift... like on a bday or christmas that you legally have to give it back

I would. Steve was engaged before we were together and she never gae the ring back. She said she would and the day she was supposed to show up she never did...turns out she pawned it. Steve was making a really good ammount of money back then and it was an expensive ring. By the time he found out it was too late to dao anything about it. I would give it back...yes it was a gift but why bother with all the trouble...id just say here ya go ....and trow it into traffic lol he wants it that bad he can go fetch it lol

but i mean when it was broken off i would be more upset about losing who i thought was the love of my life not the stupid ring!! just goes to show how many people see a true engagemetn and marriage as having the material aspects to define it

Me three.... i would not want anything to do with the ring regardless of how much it is worth.... I would be more upset at the fact that i lost who i thought was the love of my life!

the only way I wouldn't give it back, is if he did something awful, like cheated...and expected me to continue to pay 'our' bills. Then, I'd sell it to get the money to pay for his part in our credit card debt.

I agree, i'd give it back regardless who ended it unless he cheated on me...then out of spite I would sell the thing and take the money!!! lol cause cheating would be the worst in my book!

if he breaks it off u keep it....just like with vendors, if we cancel the contract with them they dont give the deposit back, so why return the ring??

For any other law students or lawyers out there...all I have to say is 'gift in contemplation of marriage...'

Or in other words...you HAVE TO give it back if you don't want to get sued!
