We will all just keep praying that they go away for you!!! Gabe is a beautiful lil boy and I think he will adjust just fine. Unfortunately, there will always be things for kids to pick on. Every picture you ever post of him shows happy and smiling, he seems outgoing. I bet he'll be very popular. Don't worry yourself too much sweetie.....if he is like you he is a survivor and we'll overcome.

You and Gabe will be in my prayers. It's so hard to have a child who is different because you want so deeply to protect them from everything. I don't have children, but I am quite a bit older than my younger sister. She has ADD and was on medication for years. Her grades suffered, she lost a tremendous amount of weight, and had to go to the nurse/guidance constantly.

I don't know why God gives anyone such hardships, but I have faith that he never gives us more than we can handle.

You are a wonderful mom and you care about Gabe so much. Good luck with everything! Feel free to FM if you need to talk.

Oh I am so sorry, Amy.
When I was teaching, I had a kid (8th grade) who had tourrets and he had lots of friends and was very outgoing and a really nice kid. His disability didn't affect his social life or academic performance at all. Medicine is always advancing, and hopefully they will have something soon for your little boy to take that will help him get over his symptoms.

I was going to say the same thing. He seems so happy and vibrant and like such a great little boy. He will make friends with no problem, and the obstacles he'll face will only make him stronger. I'll keep him in my prayers. Hugs to you for being such a wonderful mom!

This is really sad. I think from what we've seen, he's all boy and will bounce back from it quite well. And he's got a great mommy to love him....what more could he need?

You're a great mom and Gabe is a great kid! That is a formula for overcoming! He will adjust and you will be amazed at your child as he becomes an even greater kid through this experience. Don't despair, sweetheart. Everything will be alright!

I'm so sorry, Amy!!!!! It's true that some kids can be mean, but most are such sweethearts that once they look inside and see the good kid that Gabe is they'll be hooked on him!! You never know, he might find a lifelong friend in Kindergarten!! As long as Gabe lets his personality shine through he won't have any problems, he's going to be a star!!

after my father died, my little brother, who was about 5 at the time also, started developing wierd gestures as well... he did this odd blinking thing, and also would throw his head back and gulp.... the doctors told my mom also that there was nothing that they could do about it, and that we should try to not draw attention to it... but it did eventually go away... i had forgotten that he actually did this until my mom recently brought it up a few months ago....

i would definitley try and meet with his new teacher before school starts to let her know...

Re: I'm so sad about Gabe I could cry.

I teach 8th grade English and I taught a boy this past year who has Tourette's Syndrome. He has a very severe case of Tourette's and it is quite distracting.
BUT, and here is the good news, the kids LOVE HIM! They are in 8th grade, and can be really mean....but they adored this boy, and he was rarely made fun of. In fact, they elected him class president this year.
There was one day in class that he was having a particularly rough day and was just resting his head on his desk, exhausted from not being able to control himself. The girl sitting in front of him turned slightly and started patting his head gently, to soothe him. It was precious.
This boy had a rough time in Middle School....but I truly believe he will have a great life!

So, while you may have fears that he'll be alienated for being different....there's also a chance that those things that make him unique are the things that will set him apart and make his life wonderful!

I agree. And he has a mom who cares SO MUCH about him, and will always make him feel loved and perfect just the way he is.

From a teachers standpoint.. the children with exceptionalities are most often the brightest light in the group. Although I am not sure possibly he could be given a 504 plan.. like an IEP..that would allow him to rest and have certain accomodations in school to meet his needs. YOUR CHILD IS LOVED and comes from an open home. HE IS BLESSED!

when i was younger, i had a lot of tics-mostly mouth things, like turning my lips in weird ways. then it became flaring nostrils, then blinking. they eventually subsided. i was very conscious about controlling them, which is easier said than done, but i was older than gabe at the time. while i still do the nostril thing and the blinking, they are always when i am extremely tired and stressed. i know i blink a lot when i'm tired. so from that standpoint, with the baby coming, he may be under stress. marriage and a new baby are a lot for a little kid in one year. just a thought. good luck!
