I could easily afford to spend $400 on a watch, but I wouldn't. (FH wears a $750 watch every day -- but he wears it everyday and part of it was a college graduation present -- so he's had it a long time) I've considered getting FH a Rolex for his wedding present b/c I know he'd wear it... but even he says he already has a really nice watch!
I am just not into watches enough to spend that much. I'd be thinking of all the ot her things I could do with $500 -- and how much it would be worth in retirement if I just put it in our brokerage account of my 401(k). That would be a sign to me that I don't really want the watch enough.
There are things I splurge on and things I don't, even though I could probably get away with it. You have to decide what is important enough to you to splurge on. I have two horses, so their board and care is my main splurge.
If this is something you REALLY want -- and want more than something else you could splurge $400 on, then go for it. If you're thinking of all the other things you could do with the money, then get a cheaper watch and do something else with the $400.
