christening gift-- WHO BUYS THE CROSS ANYWAY???

My husbandwas just asked to be godparent to our closest friends baby. We are so excited, but have no idea what to buy.We were told that the godmother would be buying the cross. I guess this is tradition in some families. So, our dilemma comes down to what the heck can we get that is nice? By the way-- the baby is a boy!!

Re: christening gift-- WHO BUYS THE CROSS ANYWAY???

My first born was given a BEAUTIFUL diamind cross that her godmother and godfather bought for her, I think it was a lot of $, so I was hapy tthat they were able to split the cost. Contact the godmother and get an extra nice cross, OR you can get him a ID bracelet engraved with his name, and on the back it can say 'on your christening day, Love,---'

Re: christening gift-- WHO BUYS THE CROSS ANYWAY???

In my family the God mother buys the christening outfit. However in my nephews case he wore my brothers so I bought him a cross.

Other ideas
ID bracelet
Savings Bond
A cross to hang in their room
Jewlery for when they are older (my neice got a tiffanys bracelet for her christening)

Good Luck!

ETA you could also offer to buy the babys christening outfit!

Re: christening gift-- WHO BUYS THE CROSS ANYWAY???

I would ask if you can buy the christening outfit since the godmother bought the cross.

Re: christening gift-- WHO BUYS THE CROSS ANYWAY???

I would contact the godmother and maybe go in on a cross with her.

As the godmother to my niece, I contacted her godfather and we both bought her the gown and a diamond pendant...and then I bought her a few other things from her uncle and me.

If this is not an option...a savings bond is always appreciated, id bracelet...

Re: christening gift-- WHO BUYS THE CROSS ANYWAY???

I really like the idea of the bracelet. However, with the engraving do I just out my husband's name as godfather or do I also put my name and by then my baby's name?????

Re: christening gift-- WHO BUYS THE CROSS ANYWAY???

I didn't know that anyone in particular was expected to buy a cross, however my sons Godmother and Godfather (also his aunt and uncle) did get him a beautiful Celtic Cross for his Christening. It was a nice surprise.

His Christening gown was a family gown, but had there not been one I would have wanted to pick the outfit myself.

If the Godmother doesn't want to share in the cross giving, I'd say a bond is always safe.
