Another working in the city ?

Are there any city essentials you think I should get before I start working in a couple weeks? My friend suggested I get a bigger purse to fit everything in for the commute (lunch, shoes, umbrella, etc.). So this got me thinking of what other things I might need in order to prepare myself. Any suggestions?

I have a little cooler bag when i bring lunch... and i dont have a bigger bag than i would have at any other time... my bag is big but the fact that i work in the city doesnt matter...

you can always leave a change of shoes in the office... thats what i do...

working in the city is like working any other place. no need to prepare. just make sure u have enough books, magazines, ipod playlists for the train commute back and forth 5 times a week

exactly. I like to commute in ballet flats so I can walk faster and put less damage on my shoes. I prefer a bag bag for work, but when I lived and worked in the city I used a big bag anyway. I am always carrying a lot of stuff!

I rarely sleep on the lirr so i am usually reading or playing soduku on my nook or reading work-related things.

ITA. I usually have a giant bag anyway, but really, other than magazines, books, i-pod, or some kind of entertainment- I don't think you need to prepare.

Re: Another working in the city ?

My only suggestion - and this isn't to scare you - but do leave a pair of old sneakers (or new, cheapo sneakers) in your desk drawer. Unless you wear sneakers to work everyday. Just in case there's a reason to head out, like another blackout or worse.

I'm not trying to scare you at all. It's just something to keep in mind, and if you ever need it - probably you won't! - it'll be there for you.

Flats or comfy shoes for walking and load up your iPod and Nook... and maybe a small umbrella that fits in your bag... getting caught in the rain sucks.

I work and live in the city and I still wear ballet flats to work and have sneakers at my desk (well, actually more like 20 pairs of shoes under my desk) and use a big bag to schlep everything home (I take my computer home basically every night). If the office is near Penn, you won't even need a subway card! Another essential: learn how to walk fast.
