Successfully breaking an apartment lease?

Has anyone successfully broken their apartment lease (for any reason)? Please share!!!!

As I've mentioned, since we're house hunting (and getting much closer to THE ONE!), I have a feeling we're going to find our house before our lease is up (7 months from now)....

There is a clause in our lease agreement about 'assigning' our lease over to someone, but I'm not clear how it works. When we finally contact the management company to tell them our situation, I want to make sure we are as well informed as possible to make a case for breaking the lease and signing it over to another renter.

I'm wondering if anyone can share their story or any advice about getting out of your lease!!! TIA!!!

why not contact the management company and ask them to explain it to you? who better than they who wrote it?

Great suggestion!! - but this is where it gets a little sticky. Our lease was renewed back in May with the original management company. Then in July, they CHANGED management companies. When DH did a 'soft' inquiry about getting out of our lease early, they said they would honor whatever was in our original lease agreement with the first management company. So there will definitely be some legwork involved in understanding what we are legally able to do and what we can negotiate with the new company....

Re: Successfully breaking an apartment lease?

We just broke ours due to DH's Job Transfer. We already knew that we had to give 60 days notice and pay two months rent. However, we are guaranteed our security deposit in full provided they don't doc us for damages. However, we were told that if they are able to rent the apartment before the 2 months, we get the difference back. So we are getting that in writing.

I think it's BULL our complex is still going to charge us for something out of our control. But whatever. The penalty for breaking our lease without a job change or medical reason is losing the security deposit.

Re: Successfully breaking an apartment lease?

We broke our lease 3 months ago when we bought our house. We were very unhappy with our community/property managers...and thus we decided to give them no notice, at all. We packed everything, cleaned out the apartment and on our way leaving the complex, we left a letter in the Property Managers mailbox listing the top 10 reasons why we are breaking our lease, along with the keys.

I personally think that some of the items on my list scared them a little, and they probably didn't want me using it against them in court, so they never contacted us about the 2 months of rent they were due if you terminate early
