bensgirl--5/25/08--my ridiculously LONG review, including FLOWER MICHELE, CAMELOT LIMOS, COSMONY, TIMELESS TREASURES, NICK CARTER, SWAN CLUB and much much more!!!

Since my first day on LIW I’ve looked forward to writing my review. The reviews on this forum were endlessly helpful to me when planning our wedding and gave me so much inspiration! I definitely lurk more than I post on this site, but I really don’t know how I would’ve planned our wedding without all of the resources here! I did about 90% of my planning for the wedding by ordering stuff on the web (I’m lazy!) so I’ve tried to include all of the websites here!

I never thought my review would be this long, but I hope it helps other brides in their planning process!! All pro pics are from our photographer Nick Carter (www.nickcarterweddings.com)! Here we go……

Aylee Designs www.ayleedesigns.com—A+
After trying to create my own monogram and it looking pretty terrible, I decided to cough up the $ and have one professionally designed. I probably could’ve figured out how to do it on my own eventually, but I opted for convenience over savings! Aylee was easy to work with—she even pulled the colors for our monograms straight from our STD card so everything matched perfectly. I emailed her so many times with little questions and requests and she was always really nice when she wrote back. I believe she charges something like $5 for two monograms if you use a design she has already created and she has hundreds to chose from. I ordered several and in the end used these two:

Wedding Paper Divas www.weddingpaperdivas.com —A
I used WPD for my STD’s and Invites. For some reason, early on I got it in my mind that I wanted everything to match design and color wise and I liked that I could tweak their designs to match our colors. I cannot say enough about how great they were to work with. The STD’s came off without a hitch, however, when they ran the invites, the color lot looked much different than the swatch of green I chose. It was a minute difference that even DH really couldn’t tell but I’m OCD so it really bothered me. I called WPD and they re-ran the invites twice until the color was closer to what it should’ve been. Once all was said and done, the color was still not exact and they offered to run the batch again but I felt like we were killing too many trees so they offered me a 15% discount. I really think their customer service is spectacular and prices cannot be beat, but I give them an A (not an A+) just because of the color issue.

Yarmulkes.com—A
Nothing too special to say about this website/company…..we ordered two dozen yarmulkes and they arrived just as ordered. We really didn’t have to deal with them beyond the initial order.

Ann Taylor—B+
We ordered one of our flower girl dresses and a matching tie for DH from the Ann Taylor Celebrations collections. The dress and tie were both gorgeous but the dress size ran REALLY big so we had to do some returns and the customer service during that process was only average.

www.shopbriarpatch.com —B
We ordered our second flower girl dress through this website because we wanted something simple with a sash. The price was definitely right (I think we paid about $35 for the dress), it came relatively quickly, and was beautiful. However, a few weeks later, they sent ANOTHER dress. I called and they said the order must’ve been duplicated and to just write “return to sender” on the box and send it back. So, we did that and about a week later I noticed they had debited $8 from our account! I was so bogged down in wedding stuff at that point, I just let it go and figured they charged us for sending it back even though it was their error!

Banana Republic—A+
DH knew that he didn’t want to wear a dark suit for the wedding since it was somewhat outside and during the day. Everybody was so skeptical of this idea and couldn’t understand why we wouldn’t go the “traditional” route. But, we found these suits on sale at Banana and snatched up 3 of them immediately! He got soooo many compliments on his suit the day of the wedding!

Suzykate—Ebay—A+
I orderd our ring bearer pillow through Suzykate—an ebay vendor. The pillow is simple and beautiful and she was easy to work with! In the end, our ringbearer never made an appearance (very shy and very young), but I wanted to make sure I include Suzykate here.

Lillettes—A+++
Going to Lillette’s was the first “real” dress shopping I had done. I had tried on a couple of dresses at David’s by myself on a whim one day but it was a horrible experience so I don’t even consider it a true dress shopping excursion. I called Lillette’s before I went in because I am a street size 18 and I didn’t want to be humiliated when none of the sample sizes would fit over my hips. Lillette’s was amazing from the beginning and told me they had plenty of dresses for me to try on. I worked with Christina when I went in and I had a few pictures of Maggie Sottero designs with me. I loved the first dress I tried on and was ready to stop there and buy it! Christina asked me to try on a few more dresses so I did but I still loved the first one! After about 7 dresses, there was one more dress she had pulled for me. I didn’t like it at all when I saw it on the hanger, but again, Christina asked me to please try it. Thank god I did! I put the dress on and when I walked out of the dressing room my MOH immediately got teary eyed and had goosebumps on her arms! I looked in the mirror and KNEW it was my dress. It was Maggie’s “Eleganza” and it was perfect!

When the dress came in, it needed TONS of alterations. I am short and plus sized and have big chest so as you can imagine, I’m not a “typical” size or shape. When I first went in for the alterations, Laura spent over an hour pinning my dress and told me she would not sleep because she would be thinking about it. I don’t know the first thing about sewing or dressmaking, but I know it took a lot of work to make my dress perfect. All of the lace overlay had to come off before it could be altered. I was so nervous about it, but when I went back for my second fitting, the dress fit so well!!!! I could not believe it! Laura did an amazing job and was such a sweetheart the whole time!

DOJ—Nordstrom (Nadri)—A +
I knew I wanted gold jewelry for the day of the wedding, but beyond that I didn’t have a specific idea. I saw a pair of earrings by Nadri just by chance at Nordstrom’s one day and I LOVED them. I had just bought my day of headpiece and I thought it would go perfectly. Because of the detail on the bust of my dress I decided not to wear a necklace. However, 3 days before the wedding, I got it in my bridebrain that I must have a bracelet. So, I went again to Nordstrom and they had a Nadri bracelet that was stunning! Once I got it home, I realized a crystal was missing from it—I went back the next day and of course they exchanged it with no trouble!

www.butterflycraze.com/ —A +
I wanted my flower girls to carry something other than the traditional flower girl basket down the aisle so I found these “pixie pails” on this website and ordered them. They were super, super cute and looked amazing once they were filled with flowers! I had no trouble at all with the website or the order!

Daniel Sorka—wwww.modernketubah.com —A++
Since DH is Jewish, but I am not, I had no idea what a ketubah was when I first heard the word! After looking for ketubah’s on the web for weeks, I wasn’t really thrilled with the designs. Some of them are beautiful, but just not my style and I wanted it to be something that we would always want to keep hanging in our house. I found modernketubah.com pretty early in the process but didn’t think much of it because I thought we could find something we liked equally as much for less $. When we didn’t find anything else that we liked, I went back to Daniel’s website and lo and behold, he had new designs up! AND….the new designs were in our wedding colors! What are the chances!?! I took it as a sign and ordered ours immediately. Daniel was easy to work with and always responded to my emails quickly. When the ketubah arrived, I could not believe how gorgeous it was! Really, the pictures hardly do it justice. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend www.modernketubah.com!

Four Points Sheraton Plainview—A+
We blocked rooms for our OOT guests at Four Points after looking at a couple of other hotels and not being impressed. Four Points is a lovely hotel and was close enough to the Swan Club. I worked with Ryan to block the rooms and he was always professional in our interactions. I also booked the bridal suite for myself and MOH the night before the wedding and for DH and I the night after the wedding. It was an awesome suite with an amazing jucuzzi tub! All of the service we received at the hotel was super professional!

www.foryourparty.com—A+
I ordered cocktail napkins with two different designs from foryourparty. They have an easy to use website, the napkins arrived very quickly and they were so cute! DH couldn’t understand why we’d spend extra $ on personalized napkins, but when they came, he agreed they were well worth the money spent!

www.bluenile.com --A+++
My MOH had gotten married in ’06 and her husband had ordered her ring from bluenile. So, when DH and I started talking engagement and looking at rings, we used bluenile. I helped DH with picking out the center stone (diamonds are complicated) and we looked online together at settings that we liked! I was a big part of the process but DH ultimately ordered it without me knowing (I had an idea). Working with bluenile was so fantastic—I really don’t think they get the credit they deserve. We called them with tons of questions and they were great at explaining diamonds in “layman’s” terms. After DH proposed we brought the ring to Macy’s to have it appraised and it appraised at nearly double the amount we paid for it!

Since we had such a good experience with bluenile when choosing my e-ring, we also ordered our wedding bands from them. Ordering my band was easy—it’s the matching band to my e-ring and I already knew my size. However, with DH’s ring, it was a different story. We originally ordered him a size 10, which was HUGE on him, so we exchanged it for a 9.5, which was still huge and then exchanged it again for a 9, which thankfully was perfect. I had to call bluenile each time for a return code and they were so so nice!

I’ve also ordered pearls for my grandmother through bluenile and some sterling silver jewelry for myself and I’ve never been disappointed!

www.estiloweddings.com --A+
I ordered our cardbox from Estilo Weddings and it was perfect! We didn’t need anything too big because we only had 75 guests and I wanted something simple. They have tons of fun wedding stuff on their website—I would definitely recommend checking it out!

Sesame Letterpress —A+
Favors were one of the hardest decisions we made. Everything we saw on wedding/bridal websites, we didn’t like and I was adamant that the favors be something that people might actually use once they got home. I have nothing against traditional favors, we just wanted something slightly different. Somehow, I stumbled upon coasters by Sesame Letterpress when looking around the web one day. I loved that they had all different patterns and that the company was started by a couple in Brooklyn. After ordering a couple sets as samples and loving them, I contacted the owner of the company and told him we’d like to use them for our favors. He was super easy to work with and offered us a great price! They are an awesome company and if I had found them earlier I probably would’ve spent the money to have them do letterpress invites for us! This photo really does them no justice but it is the only one I have:

www.thegartermaker.net --A+
I ordered a dress patch from The Gartermaker as my something blue! It was gorgeous and the woman who runs the site was really sweet! I think she has since sold her business to another woman who I am guessing is equally talented!

www.bluetuxshoes.com --A+
I tried several pairs of shoes that were beautiful but killed my feet! I ordered two pairs from Blue Tux and ended up going with these because they matched my dress so perfectly without needing to be dyed and they were relatively comfortable. I switched to platform flip flops immediately after the ceremony so I really only wore these for about an hour!

Roseanna Amador—CosmoNY—B+
I had two other trials before I met with Roseanna. I thought I had wanted an updo but after each trail, I hate the way the front of my hair looked. When I went for my trial with Roseanna, she suggested using extensions (something I swore I wouldn’t do), but I thought it wouldn’t hurt to try them out and once they were in, I was SOLD! I felt beautiful and elegant and all the things you should feel on your wedding day. Between the trail and the wedding, I changed my mind slightly about how I wanted my hair styled and when I emailed Roseanna, she was totally cool about it.

The day of the wedding, she showed up exactly on time. She works quickly and calmly and even gave me advice on my makeup (I did my own makeup). It was an absolute pleasure to have her with me that morning!

My hair looked amazing when she was finished and all day people were complimenting me on it. Most people didn’t even know I had extensions in. I do have to say though, by the end of the day, the extensions were really hurting my head and the curl was completely gone. This is the only reason I’m not giving her an A. My own hair held the curl pretty well, but the extensions were straight. Luckily, the day was so much fun that I really didn’t even worry about it. Here is a pic of my hair at the beginning of the day and how it looked by the end:

Rabbi Alan Stein
I can’t bring myself to “rate” a Rabbi so I’ll just say that we really enjoyed working with Rabbi Stein. He’s easy going and funny and most people at the ceremony thought he had known us for years. He is quick in responding to questions and helped me out when I was looking for descriptions of Jewish traditions to put in our program. If you are looking for an interfaith Rabbi, I would definitely recommend meeting with Stein!!

Tommy’s Tunes—Tommy and Dominick
Overall—B+
Dominick—A+++

We went to meet with Tommy’s Tunes because I had read so many great things about them on this site! We went out to Selden (we live in Astoria!) to meet with Tommy at like 9:00 on a Saturday morning. We booked with them during that meeting based on all the rave reviews I had read. Tommy was very chill and did not make us feel bad for not wanting to do a lot of the “traditional” wedding stuff (we didn’t do an entrance to the reception, we didn’t do the garter or the bo-k toss, we didn’t use traditional music for the ceremony, etc.). We had only great interactions with Tommy and his staff. However, because I want to keep this fair, I do have to mention that my MOH called Tommy because she was planning on showing a surprise video she made for us at the reception (more on that later) and she wanted to rent a tv from Tommy. She literally needed the tv for 5 minutes and Tommy quoted her a price of something like $300!!! She told me that she tried to talk him down, but he insisted it would be extra work for his d.j. (the d.j would’ve had to turn it on). She ended up bringing her OWN tv to our wedding so she could show the video!

Dominick was our dj on the day of the wedding. There is not one bad thing I could say about him. He was super professional, laid back, and played the BEST music. Several of our guests raved to me about how good the mix was! When I walked into the RH he came up to me immediately and said something like “Hi Amy, I’m Dominick from Tommy’s Tunes. No worries about your day, we are set to go, I have all of your music lists. Let’s party!” He was THE BEST! At the end of the reception, everybody had left except for my best friends in the world, and he really pumped up the music so we could have a few last dances. It was so much fun!!

Flower Michele-- A+++++++++++++ (infinite)
So, everybody says it on these boards, and it’s true, John is beyond awesome! I met with two florists before John and one was just not nice and the other was too much $$$. John understood my “vision” from the beginning and is so creative! I had never met anybody with such a passion for flowers!! My big thing was I wanted peonies since we were getting married in May and wow, did he deliver! The peonies were just amazing! Every time we met with him, the first thing we said when we left is “He’s really a great guy” and it is so true! During our last meeting with him, he gave us tons of tips on places to go and eat in Aruba and he made us feel so confident that our wedding day would be perfect! And, it was! Especially the flowers and the chuppah!!! The proof is in the photos:

Camelot Limo—A+
Camelot was another vendor that we booked on site after everything I had read on LIW. We met with Joe and he was SO COOL! He didn’t try to talk us into anything we didn’t want and he was really fair with his prices. We ended up getting the Rolls, a stretch Limo for my family and a sedan for my DH and his BM. On the day of the wedding he sent a limo instead of a sedan and two of my closest girlfriend’s got to ride in it by themselves (just the way it worked out)! They were on time and professional and the cars were in perfect shape!

Beri Good Productions www.berigoodproductions.com—THE BEST EVER!
My MOH used to be my roommate and ever since I can remember she has put together edited video pieces for her friends and family when there’s an occasion in their life they are celebrating. There were many many nights when we lived together that she would sit in front of the computer for hours editing! I knew that she would be doing something for our wedding, but since we haven’t lived together for a few years I hadn’t seen any of her recent work. She showed the video in lieu of doing a traditional “speech”—in essence the video was her speech. Well, not only were DH and I completely blown away, everybody was!!! She is wildly talented and the video is so touching and funny. I can never truly describe how much it means to us that we’ll have her video forever!

She has a side business with another friend to do videos like this so I wanted to give them a little plug here! Of course I would recommend her!!

Here is the link to the video she did for us: http://youtube.com/watch?v=z78YqHvdQ_8

Photos of me and DH watching the video:

Timeless Treasures—A+++++ (pending video)
We decided pretty late in the game to hire a videographer. DH really didn’t want to spend the money, but I convinced him to meet with Ray from Timeless Treasures. After our meeting with him, there was no doubt in our minds that we should book him! His work is stunning and he is a great guy! On our day, Ray himself was not available, so his two colleagues, Chris and Glenn filmed our wedding. The guys were fantastic! I honestly hardly remember seeing them the day of the wedding but I know from pictures that they were definitely there!! We haven’t seen our video yet, but I’m SURE it will be great!!

Nick Carter www.nickcarterweddings.com—A+++++
Nick Carter photographed my MOH’s wedding a couple of years ago up in Westchester. We met with him on her recommendation and booked him. We never looked at other photographers because we knew the quality of Nick’s work and we really liked his “vibe”. I also liked giving our business to an individual instead of a photo studio. Nick is seriously one of the nicest guys on the planet and was spectacular on our wedding day. Several of our guests asked us about him because he was so nice to everybody! Nick had our proofs ready in less than 3 weeks after the wedding! Not only is he professional and talented—his prices cannot be beat! He is easy to talk to and just an all around great vendor to work with!!

Swan Club—Mike, Christhian, Vanessa—A+++++++++++++ (infinite)
Where does a girl begin???? There is nothing I can say here that will truly convey how fantastic the Swan Club is!! We booked the SC after looking at a few other places and feeling like we were just another “client” and not people! There were many RH’s that wouldn’t even talk to us, or even worse, they talked down to us because we were having a small wedding. When we went to the SC we were blown away by the grounds! I mean, it really looks like a fairytale there! And, I fell in love with the ceremony space which is in a pavilion out in the garden. But, even with all of that, the reason we truly booked is because of Mike, the sales manager. Mike ROCKS!!! He talked to us like we were actually human, he didn’t BS us at all and he took his time with us. We originally booked in their Afterdeck room because we thought we’d have 40-50 ppl at most (we really wanted it to be small!) Around November, I called Mike in a full panic because our invite list was up to 85 and we knew most of those people would come! I had literally not been sleeping because I knew we had “outgrown” the Afterdeck! Mike again was fabulous! We went to see him and he totally calmed me down and offered us the Contessa Room! We had to change the time of our wedding slightly but it was completely worth it for the extra space! Between the time we booked and our wedding, everybody at SC was great about answering my questions and calling us back as soon as possible.

In the weeks leading up to the wedding, we worked with Christhian, our matre’d. Let me just say for the record—I love this man!!! He is so sweet, laid back, and funny! I was stoked that we would have him around on our wedding day! He was awesome about answering my emails and phone calls and was always accommodating when I had a “crazy bride” request! On our wedding day, Christhian was just the BEST! He made sure we had everything we needed, he kept checking on us to make sure everything was ok, and he is just fun! I cannot say enough about how much we loved having him be a part of our day!

My bridal attendant the day of the wedding was Vanessa. I was a little weirded out that there was a person who’s job it was to take care of me but she was also so fun and easy to be around that it felt like she was just another one of my girlfriends! Now, Vanessa certainly did her job well that day but what blew my mind is what she did to our cake table! She asked me if it would be ok to use the decorations from the ceremony to decorate the cake table and I was like, “sure, go ahead”. I couldn’t have imagined how fantastic she would make the table look! I’ve posted these pics before but it’s the best way to show how talented she is! Yay to Vanessa!!

As far as service goes for the Swan Club, they really are a top notch business. One of my DH’s best friends actually worked at the Swan Club like 20 years ago and he was saying how much they’ve stepped up their game and that everything was so precise and perfect! Everything ran so smoothly and was on time, the servers were friendly and professional, and the food is delicious! We got TONS of compliments on the Swan Club! Obviously, I have a little love crush on this place and probably always will!!!

Christhian and I:

Wow, I can’t believe how long this review has gotten! I wanted to post pictures of the DIY stuff I did. I never thought I’d get so into doing this stuff, but it was really my favorite part! I got most of my supplies from www.paper-source.com, www.impressruberstamps.com and Michael’s.

Amy,
I love your style. I love everything about everything that you did. You have amazing taste. Your colors were so cool, I think I'm stealing your weepies line for our programs. I love them!

awww...thanks ally! i'm so excited that you know the weepies! my friends and i used to go listen to steve tannen play all the time in the city when he was doing solo music! we actually had the bridal party walk down the aisle to that song of theirs!!!
