***Pictures Here***Wedding Day Dance : Anne-Marie
Grade : A+
We worked with Anne-Marie Nespoli at Wedding Day Dance and she is fabulous to work with. We signed up for her 5 lesson package and actually ended up adding one extra lesson on at the end to smooth out the dance. Anne-Marie helped us to narrow down a dance from a variety of dances to the Rumba. In the first class, we learned some basic Rumba (pronounced 'Room-ba') steps. From the second to fifth class, we kept building on the moves. We actually didn't bring the song for our dance until the 2nd or 3rd class and Anne-Marie was able to work with us in choreographing a dance without our actual song which was very nice. Now, we can dance to most slow songs based on the basic Rumba steps alone. In our last class, we learned the last turn and dip for the dance. Anne-Marie is very professional and it was a true pleasure working with her. Although both John and I have had some light dance background, Anne-Marie taught us from the ground up and made no assumptions. We highly highly recommend working with Anne-Marie even if it's just signing up for one introductory lesson.
Wedding Box
Grade : A+
Site of Outdoor Pictures : Old Westbury Gardens
Out of all the vendors we worked with, we were probably the most satisfied with Wedding Box for their photography. We bought their Diamond Package which included the following:
Studio Pictures
Indoor and Studio Pictures on 2 separate days
2 wedding gown rentals for studio pictures
2 evening gown rentals for studio pictures; 1 of which I replaced with my own modified qipao
3 grooms tux rentals
Hair and Makeup for both days
1 Studio Design Album with metallic photo paper inside + Studio Design CD
2 enlargements
Wedding Day Pictures
8 hour limo
4 bridesmaid + 1 junior bridesmaid gown rentals ($15 extra for any alterations of length of skirt)
4 groomsmen tux rentals
2 grooms tux rental
10 hour video and photo
all master wedding day photo files
unedited wedding day video for additional $150
Hair and Makeup for 4 bridesmaids, 1 junior bridesmaid, 2 moms and the bride
Photography by Rex, Oscar and Kevin
We bought the Diamond Package because we were incredibly impressed with Rex's photography skills and style from our other friends' weddings. When you buy the Diamond Package, you are guaranteed Rex as your photographer. Rex taught us how to pose, made us laugh and really tried hard to take good quality pictures. When Rex took a picture that was just so so during the studio shoot he would shoot over - that was how incredibly professional Rex was. You would know when a photo met Rex's standards because he would stare at his camera and say 'hmm... acceptable.' We also worked with Oscar (photographer) and Kevin (assistant) who were both funny and very helpful. Oscar was very attentive to detail and made sure to always smooth out the bottom of my dress which was much appreciated. Oscar himself is also a photographer and his pictures are exceptional as well.
Makeup by Tina
For hair and makeup, we worked with Tina. I can not say enough good things about Tina. She is very kind, professional and truly listened to what I wanted. Most of the time, I gave Tina free reign to work with my hair and Tina was very creative in the styles she created for me. Tina's makeup skills are also incredible. Apparently, Tina was a professional makeup artist for photo shoots and magazines back in Shanghai! On the day of our indoor shooting, I had gotten little to no sleep the night before and had a few red dots from residual acne + enormous eye bags. Tina made my skin flawless and gave me huge bright eyes. I keep telling everyone that I walked into Wedding Box looking like a pig and Tina had me walking out looking like a model. Tina exhibited the same patience and creative skill on the day of our wedding as well. We highly highly recommend working with Tina even if you just want makeup done separately.
On the day of our wedding, the girls had Aggie and I believe Vicky working on my bridesmaids' hair and makeup. They all turned out fabulous, especially Aggie's hairstyle for one of my bridesmaid's shorter hair. All my bridesmaids looked fabulous and even our guests commented on how beautiful they were!
Sales
On the sales front, I dealt with a good number of gals. Our main sales rep was Annie who was great - she was very helpful and kept track of the pricing for our contract. We also worked closely with Kitty who is totally awesome. Kitty always followed up whenever I had a question and paid careful attention to small details. We worked a bit with kimberly and Vicky the week before the wedding because Annie went on vacation. Both gals were very helpful, espcially Kimberly when I was getting dressed into the Chinese Han Fu on the day of the wedding - Kimberly found me safety pins and double sided tape to stick up the bow on my Han Fu. All the sales were able to keep me in check when I started turning bridezilla in the last 2 weeks as well which was much appreciated! The one thing we would advise is to keep up with the items your schedule and with anything that is special ordered like dresses, enlargements, etc. The sales team is generally very good about following up but I've seen their calendar and they are very BUSY!
Limo
The only thing we were a bit miffed about was the limo service on our wedding day. We were guaranteed 8 hours but we only really used the limo for 5-6. We let the limo driver off 2 hours early and paid the driver $20 tip but the driver came back to us saying that the minimum for tip had to be $50. The limo driver said that Wedding Box should have told us but that seemed kind of fishy. We were not very happy with the limo driver also because we gave the limo driver a bag of tulle to decorate the limo. When the limo driver took the bag, he made a comment, 'What the F* am I supposed to do with this?' That was highly unprofessional. Although he did manage to get the 2 kitty plushes on the front of the car, the rest of the tulle was not used at all and he had plenty of time to use them up.
Attire Rentals
Our package originally included bridemaid dress rentals from either Mori Lee or Forever Yours. I wanted a pale mint green color which none of those companies carried but Watters did. If Wedding Box were to order the actual Watters dress, I had to pay an extra ~$65/dress. Wedding Box offered to have a Taiwanese seamstress make the bridesmaid dresses based on the Watters design which would not cost extra. I took that risk and the dresses all came out fabulous, even customized to each girl's size! Only minimal alterations were needed so we were very happy on how the dresses turned out.
Videographer
Ok, so the other thing that I wish we had more coverage on was the video part. Terrance/Lawrence did a pretty nice job in the beginning of the day with the tea ceremony coverage but we lost a good 30 minutes where the guests filtered into the chapel, the chapel itself, about 20 minutes of our cocktail hour and we lost bits of our 1st dance. We paid an extra $150 for the unedited footage a few days after the wedding and towards the end of the DVD, there were 2 sections of our DVD which together added up to be about 10 minutes of dancing from another bride's wedding =P LOL~ It was pretty funny because our whole family was watching the unedited video and when that part came up, we were like who turned on the Bollywood music? I'm guessing our videographer was recording over an old tape and was worried about running out of tape. It would have been awesome to get the whole 10 hours of footage so that we could do some of our own cutting and splicing but we did get a good ~5 hours. Otherwise, we were quite happy with how the unedited video turned out and are anxious to see the edited video.
For the price that we paid, we highly highly recommend Wedding Box because of the comprehensiveness in their services offered and quality of photos. Having great photos was really our priority and Wedding Box more than met our expectations. Being amateur photographers ourselves (ha!), I'd say meeting our goal was no easy task. Many many props and thanks to Rex, Oscar and Kevin at Wedding Box!

Outdoor Han Fu Studio Pictures at the Chinese Scholars Garden
We worked with Coco as the makeup artist and Tony as our photographer. Coco is a really great person and she does a great natural makeup look but she lacked the professional makeup skills that Tina from Wedding Box had because my eyebrows (naturally uneven) remained uneven whereas Tina on the other hand immediately spotted the uneveness and fixed it with an eye pencil. We were probably most disappointed by the lack of professionalism on the part of Tony. Tony is a great person but he is a much less free-pose person. Tony would tell you what pose to make and then snap a picture of you in that pose. More often than not, the poses lacked creativitiy. That itself is not too important; however, what really ruined most of the pictures were the messiness of our gowns and hairpieces. If Tony had taken a few seconds before shooting to fix the tassles in my hair or fix our gown, then the pictures would have looked that much better despite the uncreative poses. Lastly, whereas Wedding Box spent a great deal of time color correcting our photos, Eternal spent almost no time color correcting ours. Since we had taken our pictures right after a light rain, the conditions for color correction were at its best too. This was just a major disappointment. We decided not to go through with the package after we saw our outdoor studio photos.
Flower Michele
Grade : A
Customer Service
We worked with John from Flower Michele and John is a real pleasure to work with. He is incredibly understanding, courteous and kind. We had previously negotiated a contract with John and John was able to give us the same pricing for the current contract. When we changed our centerpiece idea from cherry blossoms to the picasso lilies, John was incredibly honest and told us that having the picasso lilies would be cheaper. I would say on the customer service front, Flower Michele gets an A+. The reason I give them an A however is execution.
Bride's Bouquet
There were a few flowers in my bouquet which were damaged and started browning. I also hoped my bouquet would be a bit more round but that was probably from a lack of instruction on my part to Flower Michele.
Bridesmaids' Bouquet
My bridesmaids bouquets were beautiful though. Originally I had asked for my bridesmaids to carry just a few stalks of the dark purple vanda orchids but John was able to make an actual mini-bouquet for them which was just wonderful on his part.
Centerpieces
The part of the execution that I was a bit unhappy with were the floating candles in our lotus bowls. The floating candles were a bit huge for the size of the lotus bowls in our centerpiece. The 3 floating candles all took up pretty much the entire lotus bowl so that the center of focus were the melted candles instead of the beautiful picasso lilies around the bowl. The candles were also not long lasting so that by the time dinner started, most of the candles had already gone out. There were a few tables also with pink rose petals surrounding the lotus bowls and I really wanted just white or pale green rose petals. The 9 tables that got the 3 different sized cynlinders of green dendronium orchids however were beautiful. Some of them also had the same problem with the already melted candle but they seemed to be more long lasting. We asked for 10 tables to get the lotus bowl centerpiece and 9 tables to get the assymetrical cylinders. Looking back, I probably should have had all 19 tables get the assymetrical cynlinder.
Chapel Decoration
The decoration in the Skylight chapel by the tent was beautiful. I did hope for a more traditional vase type setup on the pillars along the aisle instead of the same lotus bowl though for the extra money we paid for the chapel decoration.
Personal Flowers
Other than the execution part of the wedding flower setup, we really appreciated our personal flowers for the groomsmen, moms, dads, sisters, brothers and aunts. We were also very happy that Flower Michele filled up our 3 baskets of petal cones too.
We would definitely recommend Flower Michele for their honesty, sincerity and good pricing.
Jericho Terrace
Grade for Sales & Support Staff : A-
Grade for Maitre'd Mike Perikas : A
Grade for Bridal Attendants : A+
Sales
We separated the grading for Jericho Terrace because there were times when we felt that things could have gone more smooth leading up to the wedding but our Maitre'd Mike was really great on the day of our wedding. Our first encounter with Jericho Terrace was with Vinny back in early 2006. We were able to negotiate what we thought was a good contract by combining cocktail hour and the reception in one room. We re-negotiated a new contract in early 2008 and for the same price per person was able to get a lot more (separate cocktail hour room, 9 courses instead of the previously cut down garden menu . . .). Robert who was our sales taking care of us in 2008 definitely tried harder to help us out and was also quite responsive to email.
Wedding Planner
Jericho Terrace comes with a wedding planner Francesca. We emailed a few times in 2006 but after a few phone tags in 2008, we didn't hear from Francesca after I left her 2 messages. From what we remember, Francesca will help you find vendors for florists, DJ, Band etc etc if you haven't found one yet. By the time we booked with Jericho Terrace, we had all our vendors already in place so we really didn't need Francesca's help. It was all good.
Menu and Cake
A few weeks before the wedding, Jericho Terrace schedules a menu appointment to go over your cake, contract and menu with Gina. Gina was helpful with the menu overall. She tried to convince us to go with the NY Strip Steak over the Filet Mignon because Filet Mignons supposedly always get sent back to the kitchen for being too rare by guests. We went with the Filet Mignon anyway figuring that with 8 other choices of entree, guests who are ordering filet mignon probably would like them rare anyways. We did have a bit of misunderstanding with the cake. Jericho Terrace includes a few multi-tiered ivory/white colored buttercream sculpted cakes. We wanted to very simply change the color of our cake to a light green to match our wedding colors and so we went directly to Dortoni Bakery (the bakery which supplies Jericho Terrace with wedding cakes) to place this request. We asked Dortoni to smooth out the buttercream, make the color pastel green and asked for 3 tiers. We also said that we didn't need any of the complicated sculpting included with the normal Jericho Terrace cakes. When we told Gina from Jericho Terrace about contacting Dortoni at our menu appointment, Gina did not seem happy about us going directly to Dortoni and asked us to get back to her about the color of the cake twice even though we already told her that we wanted the cake to be the same green as on our invitation and gave her an invitation sample. Gina said we would be charged for this and so we asked why changing the color and making a simpler, non-sculpted cake would cost more. In the end, the wedding cake on our wedding day turned out to be a miniature version of almost an exact description of what we asked for (3 tiered, light green with simple flowers provided by our florist). If the cake was only 1x larger than what we got, then it would have been perfect. Out of all the foodstuffs, we were probably most disappointed by the cake.
Maitre'd : Mike Perikas
Mike is awesome. My mom and I met with Mike ~10 days before the wedding. I explained and went over with Mike how we wanted the table setup and where we wanted the props. Mike listened patiently, was courteous, professional and immediately asked the front desk to put 'Fragile' labels on our many boxes of props+favors. When a few guests pulled a no-show after we already submitted and paid for the total headcount, Mike was able to throw in a Martini bar during cocktail hour which seemed to last until the reception too! When we first arrived at Jericho Terrace on the wedding day, another party was just finishing up and guests were just lingering around. Mike helped to really get the guests out so our guests had a place to lounge. Mike also worked with our vendors and got them what they needed - even a glass of water for our photographer. We thoroughly enjoyed working with Mike and definitely recommend him as a Maitre'd.
Bridal Attendants : Linette and Karl
My bridal attendants were beyond phenomenal. They had Oxi clean and shout for when I found a stain on my wedding gown. Having lost about 10+ lbs before the wedding, 2 of my wedding gowns were very loose. Linette worked with Tina from Wedding Box to sew it up so that the alteration was barely detectable. Both Karl and Linette went beyond their call of duty to cater to our many bridesmaids and groomsmen, whether it be getting water for the girls' bouquets, refilling the food in the bridal suite, helping to direct everyone to where they needed to be before the ceremony etc. Linette helped floof up my gown when my girls were not around and was so calm and patient when I was beyond exhaustion towards the end of the night. Both Linette and Karl also saved the top of our cake for our 1st year anniversary next September and wrote a special message on the box after the night ended. They worked hard to help safely pack up and wrap all of our props at the end of the night too when they must have already been so tired.
In the Mix
MC & DJ
Grade for Sales : B
Grade for James the MC : A-
Sales and Support:
Out of all our vendors, we were probably most disappointed with the sales and office team at In the Mix. When we negotiated our contract back in 2006 with Jack, we had asked for the following:
# screen to play a montage slideshow that we would produce ourselves
# DJ and MC for the reception from 7:30-11:30pm
# zap show which included digital pictures taken at the wedding shown almost real-time on a screen and a verbal guarantee that the pictures would be ours to keep
We added on music for the ceremony when we revived the contract in early 2008. About a month before the wedding in August, In the Mix sent us a letter telling us to log onto their website and fill out a very handy form over the internet basically delineating the critical bits of information they needed such as names of the bridal party, 1st dance and cake cutting songs and whether we would have a bouquet/garter toss etc. I filled out their form and sent In the Mix our own schedule which was edited 3 times within a 2 month time period before the wedding. About 2 weeks before the wedding, John called In the Mix to schedule an appointment to begin going over our schedule but In the Mix tells us that we don't have to come in and anything we needed to tell them could be sent over email. We sent In the Mix our final schedule at least 1 week before the wedding day. Worried that it would probably be wise to go over the schedule with In the Mix, John and I scheduled an appointment to drop off our montage slideshow and at the same time go over the schedule with Gina at In the Mix. We went over the entire schedule, including exactly which songs we wanted, what we wanted said and what songs we did not want played. I even highlighted parts of the schedule which were In the Mix's responsbility for Gina. I specifically asked whether we could meet with our MC or obtain a contact number for them to go over the schedule with them or if there was an emergency but Gina assured us that they will get our schedule without a problem and if there were any emergencies to call the office. I asked if the office would be open on Sunday, the day of our wedding and Gina said that no one would be in the office on weekends, which basically meant if there was an emergency, we wouldn't reach anyone.
Less than a week before the wedding, I receive a phone call from Gina saying that our final balance was due. When we asked whether we could pay with a credit card, Gina noted that any amount paid within 2 weeks before the wedding must be done by cash. It would have been courteous if an email/phone call reminder if the all-cash payment requirement was given before the 2 week mark given there was ample opportunity to do so. Getting that call from Gina just a mere few days before the actual wedding day when everyone was already swamped trying to nail down the seating chart, get the vows laminated, get the favors put together etc was just not helpful because that meant scheduling one of us to go to the bank when every second of our day was literally being used up fast.
Another thing was when we sent In the Mix a workable version of our schedule a few weeks before the wedding, In the Mix said they would try their best to find our first dance song which was spanish. We weren't told that In the Mix was unable to find the song until a week before the wedding. When I immediately emailed the mp3 file over to In the Mix and made sure to cc myself on the email, Gina said that the file could not be opened on her computer and the contract had already 'gone into production.' However, the file worked perfectly fine on the email that I cc'd myself on. We were told that we would have to bring our 1st dance song ourselves to the DJ on the day of the the wedding - another service related item we had to worry about amongst all the things we were trying to keep track of on the day of the wedding which we felt we had paid In the Mix for.
We first have to say that we really liked our MC James. James tried hard to motivate the crowd to dance and worked with Wedding Box to generate some picture worthy moments. James also tried hard to get guests to come out to the dance floor during the Anniversary Dance and James tried his best to keep us in the loop as to what was going on with our schedule. In addition, James tried to go over the schedule with us when we arrived at Jericho Terrace on the day of the wedding but we were so swamped with the photography team, the tea ceremony and with setting things up that it was very difficult to go over things with James. In our mind, we were assuming that Gina had already gone over everything James needed when the contract had 'gone into production' but when James brought over his sheet of paper, and not our schedule, it did not look that way.
Even after going through the final schedule with In the Mix the week before the wedding, a few mishaps, fortunately minor ones, arose on the wedding day:
# We had asked for St. Elmo's Fire to be played as the Entrance song for the bridal party but In the Mix said that they had played it for our guests because that was what was on our schedule. When we previewed our unedited video from Wedding Box, I did not hear St. Elmo's Fire anywhere. Either our videographer didn't catch it or it just wasn't played. If they did, I don't know when they played it because my guests don't remember it being played either. That wasn't a big deal because the song that James and Evans chose a song for the bridal party entrance was pretty hip and fun.
# We asked for our MC to announce that we first heard 'The Gift' to be played during the bridal party dance that we first heard it at Ed & Yung's wedding - but this didn't happen.
# We had one of our long time family friends Uncle Joseph singing 'My Prayer' acappella to replace the father-daughter dance on the schedule but apparently In the Mix told Uncle Joseph that it wasn't happening during the wedding. We found out because a relative told us what In the Mix told Uncle Joseph but thankfully In the Mix was able to announce Uncle Joseph's song after we suppose checking the schedule.
# We were probably most disappointed because after the party ended, we had expected In the Mix to have the pictures which they took for the zap show ready for us to take home as verbally negotiated on our contract. When I approached James to ask him about it, James said that we had to pay $200 something for an edited copy of the pictures and that they did not give out unedited pictures. James told me to call the office up the next day. When I called In the Mix the next day, I was told something different - that we could have the unedited pictures if we paid $95 for the pictures. Not that $95 is an enormous amount of money but on matter of principle, I clearly remember negiating the contract and adding in the zap show because the pictures were to be included (with no additional charge). This was back in 2006 and mindful that maybe pricing has changed but if it has, it would again have been courteous if extra charges were specified up front and not on the night of the wedding. This little end to the evening put a real damper to our view of In the Mix.
Not to end on a sour note, we definitely give credit to In the Mix for trying within their best ability because In the Mix said they set up 2 screens for us (1 during cocktail hour to show our montage and 1 during the reception to show the zap show) which supposedly minimized setup time. If they did not bring in two screens, In the Mix said they would have had to dismantle the 1st screen after cocktail hour and then take 15 minutes out of reception to set it up the same screen in the reception room. Please note that guests were ushered out of cocktail hour into the reception room about 10 minutes before the cocktail hour was supposed to end.
Euphoria Spa
Grade : A
Kristen (the owner) and Stephanie at the Euphoria give the absolute best hydrafacials. I have tried just about every facial on their menu and have found that the Fresh Air Facial without microablation works best for my skin. The girls are simply amazing and really do a great job of cleaning out the skin. The machine they use also for the fresh air facial will do a very thorough extraction on top of the manual extraction the girls perform. I highly highly recommend checking this place out if you are looking for a good facial place or just a really relaxing spa. You will find that Kristen is often quoted in Allure, Elle and other fashion mags if you are looking to find out more about the spa. Euphoria also sells discounted packages of 5 or 6 facials which have no expiration date!
Sakura Nail and Spa
Grade : A-
I first encountered gel nail manicures about 5 years ago (2003) in Hong Kong. At the time, gel manicures were the rage in Asia because the gel applied on top of your nails hardens and protects your regular nail while letting your natural nail breathe underneath. Gel is also not toxic for your nails as compared to acrylic. When you remove gel from your nails, your nail will retain its natural color whereas acrylic will cause your nails to yellow. I have been searching for a good gel manicure place in NY since and had yet to find one until mid-2008 when I came across Sakura on the internet. They do traditional calgel and nailart manicures but be prepared to pay for what you get. One gel mani+pedicure costs an average of USD $115. The only pet peeve that I have with the calgel manicure is the normal gel manicure you get in Asia requires no top coat or top coat replacement. At Sakura, the staff applies a UV top coat over their gel manicure which requires removal and reapplication once every week. I actually think this detracts from the life of the gel manicure which normally lasts about 3 months for me. Other than the top coat requirement, the staff their is incredibly kind and skillful and I highly recommend checking the place out.
