UPDATED - FUUUUUUUUMING!!!!! Calm me down. Hold me back!!!!

Original post by carolinebr

So for Christmas, DH bought me a beautiful Rolex watch. Now, I did NOT ask for this gift. I did not need a Rolex. I find it to be silly & too expensive but yes, it is very nice & yes, ok... I am wearing it. Fine, whatever.

So yesterday, I can't find my Concord watch, which is also a VERY nice watch, that was given to me by an ex-boyfriend. I wore it EVERY DAY for 7 years, until I got my new watch. It was gold with diamonds & worth about $3-4K. Beautiful. I was FREAKING out. So I finally ask DH if he has seen it... and he said... are you ready....?.

'Oh, I gave that to the jeweler. You don't need that old thing anymore. Besides, gold isn't 'in' anymore.'

Basically, he traded in my Concord for the Rolex.

Um, you did WHAT???? You SOLD MY WATCH???? Are you out of your f*cking MIND???? Now, I knew he has a little jealousy issue with my ex, but is he INSANE? I stayed calm but the more I think about it, the more p!ssed I get.

Thoughts???

********UPDATE:*********
So last night I was ready to stab DH with a pickle fork
but I stayed calm. I told him that I was really upset that he took something of mine without asking, etc...

He was shocked that I was upset & I think he sincerely felt bad. He swears that he didn't do it for spite, that he really thought I wouldn't need it once I had my new watch.

He said that the watch is still at the jeweler & that the jeweler has it on consignment. He said he'll go get it back today. I compromised & said that we can sell it BUT the money is either going in Ella's college fund or in our new house fund. He agreed.

Asked my DH for a guy's opinion. he did the devils advocate thing but agreed that he should have asked you first unless he had previously asked you not to wear it because he was uncomfortable with it and you said no.

He still agreed it was sneaky though and pointed out even if he got some $$ for it, it was probably only half of what it was worth.

His exact words were: 'She should know better than to flaunt an exe on her arm every day in his face, but he should know now he needs a place to hide. Tell him we have a cat covered couch.'

Feel better Caroline! This is a good time to go to the gym and go for that boxing class!

So you're telling me my mink from the ex is in danger.....
JK. not really though.... Hiding the coat tonight.

He never asked me NOT to wear it but we had this EXACT conversation MANY TIMES:

DH 'we need to get you a new watch.'
BUT I always said 'I like this watch.'
DH 'we need to get you a Rolex.'
I'd say 'I don't need a Rolex, I have a watch.'
DH 'that watch is ugly'
me 'you just don't like it b/c its from Bill'

The funny thing is, DH LIKES my ex. he's a REALLY nice man. We just didn't work out. DH has even tried setting his sister up with him (she won't go for it).

LOL I'd hide the mink. Ok so from what you posted yea, your DH obviously has some macho claim issues. wanted to tattoo his name across your @ss as most men do but settled for stealing your watch. I would just scold him and make some noise so he understand that it was an invasion of privacy and if you really want to nettle him a little....remind him that since he PAWNED the old watch for the new...your ex essentially wne in on the new watch with him so now its a gift from both of them!

hell yes I'd be pissssssed. I totally agree with you. My husband would be in the dog house big time if he did that to me. I think he should have DEFINITELY asked you first!!!!!! Especially since it's something you wore a lot, it's not something that's been gathering dust for years and years, but even if it were, he without a doubt should have asked you first and then respected your decision. How could he NOT tell you he did that?!?!!!! I'd be sooooo mad.

Re: FUUUUUUUUMING!!!!! Calm me down. Hold me back!!!!

I would be so hurt and pissed if my DH did that to me. I had a watch that I wore every day that an ex had bought me years before I met DH. The watch wasn't worth much, but I could never imagine DH taking it from me and selling it. He saw that the watch was not in the best of shape so he bought me a new one, but that old watch still sits in my jewelry box because I liked it and didn't want to throw it out. It has nothing to do with who gave it to me. I grew an attachment to the item.

Both me and DH also have several items that an ex gave us. He has a bracelet with his name engraved on it. Although he never wears it, I couldn't imagine taking it away from him. That was your property and something you used all the time. I understand he was trying to be nice by buying you a better watch, but he should have asked you, not wait until you go looking for it to say, 'Oh, by the way...'

I asked my DH his opinion on what happened to you to get another guys point of view. He said you have every right to be pissed. He said if I did that to any of his possessions he would be hurt and pissed beyond words and would find it hard to forgive me. He said you should point out something that your DH values and ask how he would feel if he came home and you had replaced it.

I'm sorry to hear this happened to you.

Oh no he didn't Don't wanna add fuel to the flame BUT I'd be really really mad!! He had absolutely NO right to sell that on you!!

Good Luck!!

Re: FUUUUUUUUMING!!!!! Calm me down. Hold me back!!!!

Even though he had good intentions, he really should have asked you before trading in your old watch. It's one thing to get you an additional watch and ask that you wear it more often, but it's another to get rid of your possession without asking you.

yeah, I'd be pissed.

DH did not like that I wore the watch my ex-bf got me, so he bought me another one for one of my birthdays. The new one is so much better that I forgot that the old one even exists.

yes, I would be VERY angry and pissed that he traded in without asking however, i wouldnt wear something that an ex gave me, no matter how nice it is or if you wear it just b/c you like it.
yes it is a gift but i would hate to see a gold chain around my husband's neck that was given to him by his ex.

again, i do think it was wrong and rude for him to trade it in and take it without your knowledge and permission but i on the flipside i think it is weird to wear stuff from exes... just my opinion... no one has to agree with me...and i hope no one takes offense...

Holly sugars.. are you kidding me i would be beyond mad.. its not the fact that an ex gave it to you its the principle that he took one of your personal belongings and took it upon himself to do away with it ..

I agree with Laura on this one. I think a long chat is an order.
