What is your 'what not to wear, or what not to do' advice

What is your 'what not to wear, or what not to do' advice

I was watching something so curious what others have to say.

What are trends you hate, or what tips do you have regarding clothes, hair or make up.

My biggest thing is that alot of people buy things simply because it looks good or is trendy at the moment and don't pay as much attention to the fact that maybe it's not the right look for them. When I go shopping the #1 thing i look for is how it fits me, don't care how gorgeous something is and don't care how much I want it or how trendy it is, if it doesnt flatter me then I won't buy it. So when going through the store I basically go through all the clothes and look for specific fits. I'll go through it and say nope wrong neckline won't fit me right, bad fit of jeans on me so nope, and so on. It drives DH nuts bc he will point out something he likes and although I'll love it, i say nope doesn't fit my body type. There are some things I would LOVE to wear but just don't. Some will just buy a trend just to buy it. I am very big on what bras make you look best, what style pants is best for your body type, if youre short what type of dresses and pants to wear and that sort of stuff. Thats why i love those 2 english ladies who do the 'what not to wear' England version. They are always on Oprah and this is what they focus on and tips they give.

One tip alot of stylists and make up artists give that I do agree with is DONT match your eye make up to your clothes. One time Jay manuel came to where I was working and the first thing he did was tell the girl i was working with 'oh no sweetie you never match your eye make up and clothes this way' she had a pink dress on and had on alot of pink eye shadow. I felt bad bc he said to her face it was tacky. But for example if you're wearing a blue dress, not into wearing blue eye make up to match it or green dress and all green make up. They say to find a color that compliments it but not to match it exactly and be dress all in one color.

I am guilty of matching my eye shadow to my outfit- I have green eyes & I wear a lot of purple & purple eye shadow really brings out my eyes- I'll have to do something about that

I hate black & brown together- thats my absolute no-no, I know some people think its ok, but I just dont like it.

oh no that is fine, like if you wear green they say pick a color that matches it such as purple. I meant green dress with green eyeshadow. SO its about not wearing the EXACT same color eyeshadow

LOL yeah that is a big one and alot of ppl hate it. SOMETIMES I don't mind it but others times i do think it really doesn't go.

I'm not a huge fan of big prints on clothing.

Fashion Icons I look up to
Jackie O
Gwyneth Paltrow
I also really like Anne Hathaway's style.

I totally agree about the black and brown combo, or even navy and black! I will never wear those! DH actually bought me a pair of pants last year for Xmas and I wore them with black shoes for months b/c I thought they were black - turns out that they were a very dark navy!!! Now I only wear them with my navy shoes!

Another thing, which seems like common sense but clearly not to some... there's a girl who works in the bagel store I go to every morning. She's like 19 and she has a cute figure but she definitely has a belly (I am actually not sure if she could be prego, but I don't think so...)... anyway, everyday I go in there, and she is showing at LEAST 6 inches of her skin between the bottom of her shirts and top of her pants, and her whole belly sticks out! What the heck is she thinking?! I dunno... some people!

hmmm thats a good one. Yeah some prints I really don't care, but I guess depends on the print.

I love Anne Hathaway, I just saw the movie get smart and she looked so great in it. DH was like OH WOW she has an amazing body, I am like yeah i know you dont always see it. Natalie Portman has great style too.

FOr some reason I don't like Gwyneth Paltrow but she does have a very classic look

OMG YES!!!!!!!! I see young girls doing this ALL the time now, its like what most of them do. They put pants that are too small on them and then wear it below the waist and then they get that muffin top look. I don't understand why anybody would do this it just makes you look even bigger than you are. I know if i wear jeans that are too tight, all off a sudden i have everything pushed up and look even bigger. Wearing clothes that fit make you look thinner lol but they think its the opposite. I guess this goes with what i said above, wear clothes that flatter you.

I am into all black. That is just me. My students are so funny and have to let me know that when I have color on they say you dont have all black on wow! Even some of the teachers notice it and tell me. Its funny. What I hate is when adults (I am talking about the teachers I work with) dress like teenagers. I am a high school teacher and some of the teachers dress like the students. I mean you can be trendy but pick an adult trend not a teen one.

LOL yeah it can be bad. Although there are times when i dress down and feel its a teenager look haha. When I go out for the most part I dress as an adult. But when I dress down and casual i feel like i look like a teenager. The other day i had on A&F sweatpants, an ed hardy zip up hoodie, and i am into sneakers and had these cool sneakers on LOL. BUt I think this is what happens when you dress down, hard to dress it up lol

Gwnyneth drives some people crazy but I give her kudos for her style. I love how she's been wearing really crazy shoes and then a vixen dress. (Iron Man Premieres, she dressed great!)

And I Love Natalie Portman's style as well! Another up and coming that I love is Blake Lively from Gossip Girl.

I have to agree with your first post Denise..I hate when people don't shop to fit their bodies! I have a friend that does this and it just makes me cringe! Her husband even says it to her, but she says 'I want to wear the cute stylish clothes everyone else does'

I also hate people that have to wear every instyle thing all at once!

Oh and my personal thing...if I'm wearing a black skirt or pants...and a black top..they have to be the same shades of black..I can't wear it if the blacks aren't the same.

Yeah I have to say this is probably #1 for me. I mean we all have to deal with alot of styles not flattering us. Hey theres some styles I would LOOOOVE to wear but just don't. Whats the point of having a cute outfit on if you look bad in it and doesn't do anything for you. Its better to find something that hides your flaws and accentuates your assets.

I wear all black 85% of the time, always have and always will. I dress younger then ANYONE where I work (most women dress like 1980's CEO's or floral printed librarians) but what I CAN NOT stand is clothing not fitting on you and wearing it.

Sorry if you have a gut do not wear below the waistline pants with a short cut shirt. I have a stomach I wear shirts that go below my belly line and refuse to have my butt hang out of anything. My friend who is way heavier then me does this all the time. I want to tell her stop trying to fit in juniors clothing when your a size 16/18 in misses its SCARY.

If I wear a skirt that is short (not a mini never would wear a mini) I wear leggings, black tights or dark tights not fishnets those I reserve for knee length or longer skirts. When you are over 25 mini's and fishnets don't mix at the work place.

Can't stand looking at a VERY tiny girl like a size 0 with a bag on her arm that is XXXL so it basically is the size of the girl and then some. You look WAY off balance, don't care if they are fashionable you look silly.

Re: What is your 'what not to wear, or what not to do' advice

Hmm I am going to jump in since I am a bit bored. Slow day!

Numero 1-Biggest peeve:
- Adults dressing like kids AND/OR Kids dressing like adults.

I love what not to wear and I admit that it took me awhile to wean off the Jr.'s department (which they hate) but some of these women I am like dude..you ahve a slammin body yes, but you're 40+ and your kids tell you on national TV that they are embarassed you borrow their clothes and pick them up at school that way-Get a clue.

The opposite that bugs me is parents dressing their kids especially little girls in provocative clothing-T shirts that say #1 bad girl or 'I Must noT Kiss The Boys' or sweats with Juicy across the butt. Its distracting enough as a teacher when you see it in school (how can hormonal boys learn when the girls are dressing like Britney Speares?), but when the kid is 5 years old, its just distasteful.

We unfortunately live in a world of sickos. Dont have your kid advertise. The heavy heavy makeup on 13 year olds bugs me too. In the malls you see them. they look 21 till they get really close and you wnat to scrub their faces.

2. Agreed about the dressing for your body type. I LOVE those cute baby doll and empire waist dresses that are sheath styles but I cannot wear them. They just dont wory for curvier figures. i have realized embracing my curves tastefully seems to work for me way better than trying to hide. Pencil skirts and fitted blouses versus a trapeeze style dress, etc.

3. People who do not match their lipstick to their liner. You know, the really dark liner but the pale lipstick..You're supposed to smudge it so it looks natural. If its a shade off ok but when your lipstick is pink frost and your liner is burgandy thats pretty bad.
