What is your 'what not to wear, or what not to do' advice

Original post by Espo22

I was watching something so curious what others have to say.

What are trends you hate, or what tips do you have regarding clothes, hair or make up.

My biggest thing is that alot of people buy things simply because it looks good or is trendy at the moment and don't pay as much attention to the fact that maybe it's not the right look for them. When I go shopping the #1 thing i look for is how it fits me, don't care how gorgeous something is and don't care how much I want it or how trendy it is, if it doesnt flatter me then I won't buy it. So when going through the store I basically go through all the clothes and look for specific fits. I'll go through it and say nope wrong neckline won't fit me right, bad fit of jeans on me so nope, and so on. It drives DH nuts bc he will point out something he likes and although I'll love it, i say nope doesn't fit my body type. There are some things I would LOVE to wear but just don't. Some will just buy a trend just to buy it. I am very big on what bras make you look best, what style pants is best for your body type, if youre short what type of dresses and pants to wear and that sort of stuff. Thats why i love those 2 english ladies who do the 'what not to wear' England version. They are always on Oprah and this is what they focus on and tips they give.

One tip alot of stylists and make up artists give that I do agree with is DONT match your eye make up to your clothes. One time Jay manuel came to where I was working and the first thing he did was tell the girl i was working with 'oh no sweetie you never match your eye make up and clothes this way' she had a pink dress on and had on alot of pink eye shadow. I felt bad bc he said to her face it was tacky. But for example if you're wearing a blue dress, not into wearing blue eye make up to match it or green dress and all green make up. They say to find a color that compliments it but not to match it exactly and be dress all in one color.

2. Agreed about the dressing for your body type. I LOVE those cute baby doll and empire waist dresses that are sheath styles but I cannot wear them. They just dont wory for curvier figures. i have realized embracing my curves tastefully seems to work for me way better than trying to hide. Pencil skirts and fitted blouses versus a trapeeze style dress, etc.

Oh my god I have two tops that are 'baby doll' and I freaking look pregnant in both of them. I had to put them away and say well when I do get preggers I can wear it IoI I thought it might work for me until someone asked me are you expecting? I figured it was hiding my ugly spots but instead it accented it. Fitted shirts work best for girls with curves!

ITA with NOT wearing clothes just because they are trendy , not because it flatters you . And Im sorry but some clothes are just plain ugly , I don't care what kind of body you have like for example - gladiator sandles - just flat out ugly IMO

Things that I notice on people-
1. too tight clothes. Listen ladies , we all have the battle with the scale at times, but if you have to lay down to get your clothes on , it is too tight! Suck it up and buy the larger size or stop eating . You look like a sausage and I have seen this on girls who are thin . Its ok to go up from a 0 to a 2, just wear what fits you!

2. Low rider jeans and the muffin top - just a big no no

3. Belly shirts on anyone over 21 , same with hootchie shorts

4. too low cleavage tops - unless you are at the club , put the girls away

5. scarves in the summer - seriously why was this ever a trend and why did i see a bunch of followers in the sweltering heat like SHEEP doing whatever the celebrities do

I buy very few trendy pieces , if ever. I tend to by stuff that is classic for work , and more funky trendy in the summer . I have a LOT of black, grey's ect, very simple. Ann Taylor is my favorite classic store , and Bebe is my favorite funky story

Style Icon's - Jackie O , Audrey Hepburn
Victoria Beckham ( only I wished she would eat more ) Jennifer Anniston always looks good to me .

YES!

I have the cutest baby doll tops and thought they'd hide my hips and balance me but when I saw pics of a family get together I wanted to die. i looked 6 months preggers! Im not a heavy girl just very curvy-bottom ehavy-so I need to watch. i never wore fitted outfits because I was self concious of looking 'cheap' , but I think if the skirts are to the knee and not vitting like sran wrap you're fine. Same with fitted tops but not showing all the cleavage.

OH! I have a new one...

Women who wear WHITE pants with balck underwear beneath. And I dont mean white jeans or lined slacks. I mean those stretchy flare leg pants and you see it ALL! Black thongs are double ouch.

Same for white dresses with black underwear.

I wear all black 85% of the time, always have and always will. I dress younger then ANYONE where I work (most women dress like 1980's CEO's or floral printed librarians) but what I CAN NOT stand is clothing not fitting on you and wearing it.

Sorry if you have a gut do not wear below the waistline pants with a short cut shirt. I have a stomach I wear shirts that go below my belly line and refuse to have my butt hang out of anything. My friend who is way heavier then me does this all the time. I want to tell her stop trying to fit in juniors clothing when your a size 16/18 in misses its SCARY.

If I wear a skirt that is short (not a mini never would wear a mini) I wear leggings, black tights or dark tights not fishnets those I reserve for knee length or longer skirts. When you are over 25 mini's and fishnets don't mix at the work place.

Can't stand looking at a VERY tiny girl like a size 0 with a bag on her arm that is XXXL so it basically is the size of the girl and then some. You look WAY off balance, don't care if they are fashionable you look silly.

the last one is TOO funny. Never thought about it before but so true

Or from a size 4 to a size 6...or an 8... -grins- just saying..not that i have PERSONAL experience or anything.

Hmm I am going to jump in since I am a bit bored. Slow day!

Numero 1-Biggest peeve:
- Adults dressing like kids AND/OR Kids dressing like adults.

I love what not to wear and I admit that it took me awhile to wean off the Jr.'s department (which they hate) but some of these women I am like dude..you ahve a slammin body yes, but you're 40+ and your kids tell you on national TV that they are embarassed you borrow their clothes and pick them up at school that way-Get a clue.

The opposite that bugs me is parents dressing their kids especially little girls in provocative clothing-T shirts that say #1 bad girl or 'I Must noT Kiss The Boys' or sweats with Juicy across the butt. Its distracting enough as a teacher when you see it in school (how can hormonal boys learn when the girls are dressing like Britney Speares?), but when the kid is 5 years old, its just distasteful.

We unfortunately live in a world of sickos. Dont have your kid advertise. The heavy heavy makeup on 13 year olds bugs me too. In the malls you see them. they look 21 till they get really close and you wnat to scrub their faces.

3. People who do not match their lipstick to their liner. You know, the really dark liner but the pale lipstick..You're supposed to smudge it so it looks natural. If its a shade off ok but when your lipstick is pink frost and your liner is burgandy thats pretty bad.

oh god i hate seeing young girls wear stuff like that. I once saw a girl that seriously looked like she was 12 or younger, wasnt even like a young girl who looks old. She had a tshirt that said something like 'your man cant stop calling me' or tell your man to stop calling. My first reaction was just to laugh and i think she noticed lol.

Oh god YES some girls wear this nude color with dark lipliner. I hate that, i dont even wear lip liner or even lipstick actually. I mostly wear a light lip gloss. Also alot of girls who do that and others too, also do this all white eye shadow and it can look nice on SOME but I am sorry, I don't think it looks good on most girls.

My biggest fashion pet peeve is uggs or any winter boot being worn in the summer- especially with a mini skirt! I just hate it and think it looks trashy! LOL.

My favorite fashion icon I think is Faith Hill. She is just so classy! I also love Reese Witherspoons style. I def like the classic look. Trendy is fun sometimes for certain events, but over all I just like classic pieces.

i was afraid to mention the Uggs bc i know ALOT of girls wear it and didn't want to offend people, but yeah i dont like them either. ANd its funny but last week when dh and i went shopping we brought this up, and we bring it up almost everytime we go shopping. But why do 90% of girls who go shopping wear sweatpants with uggs. Its like the national shopping outfit. I see it all the time and its like ok you are wearing the same outfit as almost every girl here.

I love Anne Hathaway and I have to say i love Jennifer Lopez. Even when she is very daring with hwr outfits, that woman always looks like a million bucks. She knows what works for her and is not afraid to flaunt it. I find her style, especially in recent years, to be a style I try to emulate.

Reese Witherspoon also always does the red carpet look beautifully.

LOVE Anne's dress.

Oh yes the whole 'rich' area/mall trend of LI is uggs and sweats - SORRY you look dumb in that outfit with your LV bag. Its like polishing a turd or something.

The BP went dress shopping for the TWOTY and I was a half hour early and waiting and every girl that came in wore a LV or a Burberry bag with their Velour sweats and uggs and a scarf. Is that what winter dress down chic is? Cause its icky to me.

I love Reese too and Penelope Cruz always looks amazing.

For funkier styles, I always liked Cameron Diaz.
