anybody who works in retail, i have a question

Original post by Espo22

OK, i have a bit of a situation which seems like this is all i deal with lately

Ill explain the situation and then ask for the info i need.

Ok so 2 weeks ago i bought something at swarovski, it was the wrong price so had to do a return and about $160 was supposed to be put back into my bank account since i used a debit card. I even asked the girl right after how long it will take until its back into my account and she said it should go in right away. Well days go by and nothing, i called them 3x and the people who pick up dont even know w** is going on. FINALLY today i call and this lady was able to help me, she found the transaction from the date i told her and then said to me that the return was done and that instead of cash back the cashier did store credit, now im annoyed and told the lady that i specifically asked the girl ahead of time if they do cash back or store credit and she said they do both so i can pick which one i want and i said cash back, and like i said above i even asked the girl 'when will the money be put back into my account'. The lady i spoke to today said that they do both but the girl must've messed up and instead of putting it down as cash back return she did store credit and must've not even realized. So i told her that sorry but i dont want store credit, i want the cash. First she tells me 'well you would have this store credit for a long time and can use it whenever so its not bad' i said NO its not what i want and not what i need at the moment and its not my mistake. She said once its put as store credit in the computer they cant reverse it. She said however, they can have the accountant who goes there once a week to try and fix it, she took down my info and said she'll have the accountant call me on monday when she is in.

Ok i am really annoyed, i dont know what is going on that i keep dealing with idiots. I even sit and think 'did i do anything wrong, did i not make myself clear' but NO that is not the case, when i mess up i say it, i messed up yesterday when purchasing from paper presentation and i took it as money lost bc it was my mistake.

But here is my question. Is it really true that they cant reverse it? I really don't see what the big deal is, they see it was a return, i dont want the store credit and its not my fault that one of their employees did that without even knowing herself since right after she did the return she told me that the money should be back into my account right away. Do i really have to wait for the accountant to do something? and will she be able to? What can i do or ask? This is BS that i have to deal with it bc of their mistake. Its not ALOT of money but its still $160 that is mine and gone for no reason

I work in retail and they can DEFINITLY reverse it. If not, they should be able to do a, what my store calls, a petty cash aout of their register and then just void your store credit. They probably cant put it back onto your card but they can definitly give you the cash. They are just BS'ing you.

hey cash given right to me is good too lol, i wouldn't mind that at all. Thank you SO much, i am definitely going to say this to them about how to do it since it seems they cant figure it out. Or maybe they are just covering the persons a** who messed up.

They should absolutely reverse it. What they should have done when the error was first made was a post void mean that the whole transaction would have been voided and your card would have never been charged in the first place.

I used to work retail during college, but I am not sure if it is really 'true' because they don't even tell their sales associates the truth half the time.

Here's what I would do:

1) Physically show up in the store with all the receipts and demand to speak to the manager IN PERSON. If you're concerned about when the manager will be there, call ahead and find out. Tell the manager this is not your mistake - this entire thing is their mistake, from the first thing with being charged the wrong price to the second thing with issuing store credit.

2) If they don't automatically reverse it right then and there, tell them you are a) calling their REGIONAL manager and their DISTRICT manager AND that b) you are reporting them to Swarovksi corporate headquarters and c) that you're reporting them to the better business bureau.

I really think they will give you your money back right then and there, but if they don't, I can help you do all the things listed in #2. I have done them before. By doing these things, I got Nextel to give me hundreds of dollars after they screwed me over with something and I got cablevision to give me a free month of cable, internet and phone plus free delivery and installation of a DVR box after they botched another installation of a phone line.

OH WOW good job getting those things hahaha. UGH i used to have nextel well now i have sprint and they merged so yeah I can only imagine what they did. When i ordered my phone the lady barely spoke any english and i mean barely .

Yeah going in person is better, I can do it tomorrow since i have to go to LI anyways.

Thank you for all the advice.

Exactly. Basically, they're screwing up left and right here.

There is a way they can fix it for you.

First off you should call their corporate customer service and file a complaint against the store. This is absolutely ridiculous

Secondly, what they need to do is physically in the store repurchase the item for the incorrect price with the store credit. Then have them return it again and put the balance on your card. They should accommodate you and do this because they made the error.

what if i dont have the item, it was a birthday gift for somebody and i gave it to them already

The item number/sku is on the receipt. They can use that info. You don't need the actual item. Do you have the names of the people you spoke with at the store? You want to deal with them directly so you're not repeating your story 100 times.

Yes i have the names, and ill call ahead of time to find out when the manager is there. Although the lady on the phone was talking to the manager the whole time and this is what the manager said

Sorry to hear they are such idiots and that you have to deal with them. What if you asked them for their corporate number and call and complain? That should scare them if they care enough about their jobs.

Oh good idea, i should just call the corporate number myself. Thank you

You're welcome! That's a reputable company that should work with you...I hope this works!

denise call the corporate # and ask for the presidential claim department. my dad (works in finance) siad every company has a presidential claim dept and when you speak to them it is easier to complain and get what you want...because well it's like talking to the president of the company.

but def call and complain that is ridiculous that they pretty mucuh know they made a mistake but can't do anything about it

thank you, i am sick of getting screwed over these past 2 weeks so i am definitely calling hahaha

Ok i am pretty sure they can`t reverse it. it`s kind of like when you buy a giftcard you can`t get cash for it at the store. I think even on the back it says it has no cash value, BUT in this case i think what you should suggest is that they make a fake purchase with the store credit and then re-retun that merchandise and with that return credit you back cash! Really how hard could that be. Right??

And Denise, each store has set goals and they want you to shop in their store. So you can tell them that you won't be shopping in their location anymore because of their lack of customer service. You'll go elsewhere where you're treated like a real customer.

yeah and here is the funny part, they charged me for the full amount so that money was taken out of my bank account, so i dont know how they figure the whole store credit thing even will work my bank statement shows they charged me over $300 which they shouldn't have. So basically I am out over $300 cash that was in my bank but they want to give me store credit, yeah thats great

Each store has more than one manager so deal with a different one.

I did not get to read all the responses but I would put a dispute in with your CC company.

I had a situation where I was charged twice for something at a restuarant and tried to get it refunded directly thru the company and it just wasnt working out. So I disputed it with the CC company and they took care of it. Took several days but it was worry free for me!

exactly and if not then take the money out of the persons paycheck who messed up, not my problem. I even asked the girl before she did the transaction if i get the money back and THEN she went to the register to do it.

there HAS to be a way around it! i have worked in retail for years and they DRILL it in to your head 'the customer is always right' the only catch with that is they can say since the 2nd purchase was done with a credit they may only be able to issue another credit so do you still have your original recepit?

Yes you can still dispute it. I had fradulent activity on my debit card and got it disputed. Good news is....they should be able to put the money right back into your account while they do the research. You are going to have to give a VERY detailed explanation tho and they will send you some forms via mail that you will need to sign (usually). Dont mention anything about the store credit....just say you were supposed to get a refund and you still havent gotten it and you have talked to x, y, and z and still nothing.

ALSO I would still write a letter or several letters of complaints to the headquarters when this is all said and done. Tell them they need to compensate you for all your hassles! I have done this before and gotten a lot of freebees!

One question though....was the product amount $160? Like how much was originally charged on your account?

yes i keep every receipt, it drives others nuts bc i honestly have a huge box of receipts even from the 90's ... but i always say, what if i get audited and need one of these receipts

Re: anybody who works in retail, i have a question

They cannot reverse it. However, you can call your bank and tell them what happened. On your behalf, your bank will contest the transaction of store credit and get your money back into the bank. Sometimes a bank will even front the amount of the descrepancy within a few business days. Not all banks have this policy.

I say call your bank and let them take care of it.

good luck!!

PS - I have a filer of all my receipts....FH cannot understand it but I save everything! Mostly because I do alot of returns or if something breaks I return it.
