Anyone Not Dream of Your Wedding as a Girl?

Original post by cjik

I'm just curious, since I'm beginning to feel like a freak of nature. Did anyone NOT dream about your wedding when you were a girl? I can't say I ever thought about it until very recently.

I thought about getting married, but I can't recall dreaming of my wedding. Anyone else?

Thanks for your feedback! The wedding propaganda was beginning to get to me, and I needed to know I'm not the only one who hasn't been planning this event since the age of five.

I'm also not going with all of the traditional stuff (bouquet toss, dance with my father, dance with his mother, etc.), and I've had a couple vendors say, 'But you have to do such and such.' Of course I didn't hire them, but their words stuck in my mind...

Thanks for bringing me back down to earth. Starting out with this, I just wanted to enjoy the day, hope our family and friends would also, and enjoy our life together. This is reminding me that those are the important things, not the color of the flowers or the way the place folds the napkins.

Thank you!

so much for the cliche!!! I didn't either, which is why I can hold on to my money so tightly....nothing is a must to be (except, of course, for FH to show up!!)

I didn't dream about it as a child but I did started ordering invite samples in 1995 (an ex). Wedding propaganda is everywhere. FI was just commenting last night about all the wedding programs, movies and even commercials. Runaway bride was on yesterday as was some movie with Rene Zellwegger marrying a guy that inherited $100 million and there is a new JLO movie about a wedding. And throughout the day FI noticed commercials with brides (and not ads for anything wedding related either).

I have had tons of people say 'you have to do this and that' but I have decided to ignore them all. The best advice I received was from a caterer friend of my dad's in VA. He said to elope like he and his wife did. The wedding industry is a billion dollar industry and he admitted that all his food and service is marked up by at least 50% for a wedding versus a regular party

I hate it when vendors, etc. are like-- I know you have been dreaming of this day your whole life-- blah blah.. wedding propaganda!

I totally agree. I was a tomboy growing up, freaked out by most anything considered 'girly' and wedding would fit that bill. I'm excited for our wedding, but I still don't 'dream' about it (except the occasional wedding nightmare where I've forgotten to book all vendors and it's the night before!!!).

So...of course I think you're totally normal, to answer your orignial question

In the words of my late dad, 'you don't HAVE to do anything in life, but pay taxes and die....'

I definitely did not dream of the big wedding ever. The few things I did dream of, I couldn't have because both of my parents passed away before I found the man I wanted to marry. I did not want the big wedding, but planned it and dealt with all of the headache because DH wanted it. In retrospect, I am glad we did it and it was a great celebration, but I eliminated a lot of things I thought were unnecessary and don't regret it at all. Focus on the things that are really important and will last. For me, that meant spending a good deal of time thinking about and planning my mass, spending a bit more on rings and photos and not so much on everything else. Do what you want, not what other people guilt you into and you will have a wonderful wedding!!

ME! I told everyone that I was going to marry myself and have a ceremony where I asked me to marry me I really never thought I was going to get married.

I never had any fantasies about my wedding. And even now that I'm engaged I can't say that I'm having dreams about it either. Basically I want it to be nice, for everyone to have fun, and to end the day married to the love of my life. THe details will fall into place as we continue on in the planning process.

If you are a freak of nature for not dreaming about your wedding, i don't even know what I am...

I never ever thought of my wedding - even after FH had the wedding talk and we started our ring shopping (he went ring shopping for three months with his mother sister and cousin and nobody could find a ring that was 'perfect' for me so he finally decided to break down and take me which worked out very nicely and he worked very hard to make it romantic) So this whole experience has been surreal!! I'm glad I'm not alone!!

I never dreamed about the details but I think I always thought about walking down the aisle to my prince and now I've found him!

I really didn't. I never had the fantasy of the wedding dress and such until I met FH. I think that is why I am so unsure of what I want~!

I never thought about getting married or a wedding until I was much older. That's why that Majestic Gardens commercial with the little girl and boy kinda freaks me out....

My family use to fight with me all the way though my teens, because they feared I would never marry but have children by artifcal means. I never wanted to get married at all. It wasn't until I met Joe when I softened A LOT. I've always been very career focused and nothing else.

Yeah I don't like that either. Oh and I hate it when people on tv or even just around you, tell you that 'every girl dreams of their wedding day!' I think the wedding industry tries too much to market on old childhood feelings, I think some of them need to cater to the woman those little girls become. Do you know how many times I've been asked about my wedding 'well do you think your parents will approve???' I'm like 'Hello I'm a grown woman here.'
