it's definitely important. You might as well just be friends if you don't have attraction!

in your opinion that is
Alright Don, we get it. We're shallow for thinking phyiscal attraction is a factor in a relationship.
I think I'm taking what Don is saying a little differently .. I don't think he's calling anyone on this thread shallow for thinking physical attraction is a factor .. (actually I said that some people might THINK I was shallow for stating that I considered phyiscal attraction a key factor) ..
Not to speak for him, he can definitely hold his own But I interpret his comments to mean that he merely believes that all the other aspects of attraction in a relationship (mental/emotional/etc) far outweigh the phyical attraction , and that perhaps some people place to much emphasis on those ideals ...
With that, I do agree that I respect all opinions as well
well flee, you ARE shallow but for other reasons

here's the thing, boosh is beautiful and she knows that...and there is a big physical attraction there
but we met online before we met in person and i was in love BEFORE we even met - -wouldn't have mattered to me what she looked like
so i guess i am in the minority here
i suppose it's important, but is should never be the first criteria IMO
I'm with you on that Don. I have fallen 'in love' before without even meeting the person. The overall chemistry is what is important to me.
I don't think anyone is being shallow by saying looks are important. I think it's all personal choice. I dated a balding, very unnatractive guy based soley on his intelligence. He was super smart and it was a turn on to me. There was chemistry too but he wasn't a bag of donuts in the looks department. Maybe it's because I have low self esteem regarding my appearance that makes me less critical in terms of looks of significant others. That's just who I am and who I've always been. Now if the dude had a third eye or something, that's another story.

Physical attraction takes a backseat for me. I fell in love with DH's personality, humor and intellect and I also happen to find him attractive.
When your old looks go out the window anyway

See, I had some hook-ups in college based ONLY on attraction. I don't think attraction alone will ever lead towards life-long happiness...But, as one of the factors contributing to a successful relationship, I do believe it is important.
FH WAS a college hook-up back in 1988. I ignored the next day as I felt I beer goggled and was so damn embarrassed.
Fast forward to March of 2004. Long story short. Both of us were on Jdate. He was a match of mine so I contacted him via IM. We put two and two together (after an hour or so of chatting) and realized who we both were. We satisfied a curiosity to see how we turned out and now we are getting married. Back then I wasnt attracted. Now I am. Who knew?

now that I think about it though, I guess I am going to have to agree with the statement that a persons personality will make you attracted to them, cause I look at past relationships and wonder what I was attracted to, and I am thinking the personality,,,and those who really hurt me had a way of totally turning mne off, when at one time I thought they were so attractive.
so it is a whole, for some it just depends on the order of which came first the attraction to the chicken, or the nice egg.
bingo

To me physical attraction is kinda important but its not the binding factor in a relationship. I mean you could meet a drop dead model guy who treats you like crap
When I first talked to Don on the phone we talked for three hours and he made me laugh for those three hours. Thats what drew me to him.

Re: Attraction...
I think that attraction plays different roles at different times. It appears in so many different ways that yes, it IS important. Not so much physical attraction, but emotional, intellectual, spiritual, etc. So yes, it's VERY important, but on all different levels and in all different ways.

To me, looks aren't everything. If I had met DH online first, I'm 100% positive that I still would've fallen in love with him, regardless of how he looked. We met in person though and it was a 'love at first sight' type of situation. He looked up at me and we made eye contact and I had the most amazing feeling inside. We started talking and instantly hit it off. If he had ended up talking with me and we hadn't bonded as well as we had, I don't think we would've started dating, despite that amazing physical chemistry we had. Personality means SO much more to me.

I think people aren't being honest with themselves when they say that.
say what? attraction doesn't count? no way they are not being honest with themselves
Exactly! Even the most sensistive and open-minded man or woman would chose the good-looking perfect person over the unattractive perfect person.
I don't agree with this at ALL. You're entitled to your opinion though.

Re: Attraction...
I definately need to be attracted to someone...BUT it is not the sole reason i would be with someone...and NO the most attrective does not win out...They have to have the COMPLETE package... So to say that someone would pick the hot guy over and ugly one...WHO IS TO SAY WHICH IS WHICH...In your eyes Joe Smith might be hot and John Doe might be BUTT ugly... But in my eyes John Doe might be the one for me. Some yu can't give a blanket statement that someone would pick the good looking one!
Attraction is important in a relationship but it ISN'T the MOST important thing...And ANYONE who thinks that...well it is sad

That is my feeling exactly. I had a housemate once that was extremely hot. When he opened his mouth, complete idiot! I no longer found him physically attractive.
