Did anyone just see on the news the little girl that was....

Original post by june262004

Handcuffed? I think it happenedin Florida. She was having a tantrum so bad that all the other students had to leave the room. Then she started climbing the walls kicking and screaming and punching the teacher. She was sent to the princaples office where she continued. She climbed on a chair and then on top of a table. She was on the floor kicking. They called the police and they came and said we are going to handcuff you. And they did.

Ok Im not a mom but I don't see why this was so Horrible maybe a little extreme but it probably taught her a lesson. Her parents are going to sue (of course)

Wheres Deb was this in the armpit?

well if you can't use it...why be trained in it
It can only put a teacher in a compromising position!

I have to say, if I was in this situation, I sure as hell would restrain the child. Let them sue me later. I wouldn't care. The safety of the child is the first and foremost thing, as far as I'm concerned. I'm assuming that there would be very, very few cases in which this would be relevant. I would risk losing my job to keep a child safe.

i would care if you can go to jail for abuse! Have your teaching license taken away !

THis mother is going all out! And i would rather call the police and let them handle it then put MY LIFE at risk...!

10 years from now who will care about whether that girl had a tantrum!

Let me say this, I would not restrain a child for throwing a tantrum such as this one, I guess my mind just went to that because I've seen kids trying to crack their heads open on cement, throw themselves through glass windows, choking other students, etc. Granted, I worked in a school where each student had release papers signed by their parents for restraints to be placed on their children if need be, AND cameras were in every part of the school to save your azz if someone cried abuse. I don't know. I still think it's a good idea to know how to restrain someone or get out of a choke hold or a hair grab, etc. Even if you never, ever use it. Even if you only learn it to know for the 'outside' world away from school.

I'm not making much sense. I'm tired. Sorry

what if the 5 year old kid was pounding on one of your kids? I know I'd WANT that kid to be handcuffed...5 years old or not....restrain the kid to keep my kid safe!

Yes, but this is not your 'typical' situation. They are isolated there for behavioral issues, so that's not your typical school setting.

BUT they WERE originally IN the regular school setting at one point!
THeir behavior got them into that specific school!

JOnn you obviously really do not know what you are talking about!

Open you mind! This isn't a normal 5 year old...
MOST LIKELY this kid has some serious issues! AND to ensure the safety of your child MAYBE it is better that they are in hand cuffs then have their arms twisted and broken because someone is trying to hold them and they are squirming about!

OPEN YOUR MIND!

If there was no one in the school who was trained in restrain, then I think the handcuffs were the right decision, to stop the child from hurting herself or others.

I saw the video and I agree with most here..they were trying to restrain her to not HARM HER,,,as she was trying to harm THEM...no other choice....

if it was YOUR child.........would you want that to happen.......no.....i still say a 5 year old does not need to be handcuffed

NO it isn't NORMAL for a kid to do what that kid did!
YES i saw the video and for how long were they to do that? hold her down?
ANd when she squirmed about beofre getting her down...possible breaking an arm or wrist...what would you have said then?

Again this isn't a normal tantrum from a 5 year old!

If my child was emotionally disturbed and they needed to restrain her in the safest way possible, then yes, I would want her handcuffed. I've seen kids throw tantrums like this. They do not respond to 'normal' interventions.

ABSOLUTELY!

I'd rather have my child safe in handcuffs than possibly hurting herself like she could have!
What happens when she said she was calm and they let her go and she did something even more outrageous then CVLIMBING WALLS and HITTING TEACHERS!

YES!! If my child was being THAT violent and was a threat to not only other children's safety, but her OWN safety as well, then YES, handcuff her and get her under control!!!
