Did anyone just see on the news the little girl that was....

Handcuffed? I think it happenedin Florida. She was having a tantrum so bad that all the other students had to leave the room. Then she started climbing the walls kicking and screaming and punching the teacher. She was sent to the princaples office where she continued. She climbed on a chair and then on top of a table. She was on the floor kicking. They called the police and they came and said we are going to handcuff you. And they did.
Ok Im not a mom but I don't see why this was so Horrible maybe a little extreme but it probably taught her a lesson. Her parents are going to sue (of course)
Wheres Deb was this in the armpit?

Alright so she was only 5
Video shows police handcuffing 5-year-oldWBBH-TVST. PETERSBURG — An attorney says he plans legal action against St. Petersburg police officers who handcuffed an unruly 5-year-old girl after she acted up in her kindergarten class.
A video camera was rolling March 14 as part of a classroom self-improvement exercise. The camera captured images of the girl tearing papers off a bulletin board, climbing on a table and punching an assistant principal before police were called to Fairmount Park Elementary.
Then it shows the child appearing to calm down before three officers approach, pin her arms behind her back and put on handcuffs as she screamed, 'No!'
Largo lawyer John Trevena let the news media see the tape this week after obtaining it from police.
The attorney says it's incomprehensible that the police officers would bend a child over a table and forcibly handcuff her.

i still agree with the decision...and i would think that this is what they are supposed to do...I really do not think a police officer would take it upon themselves to do something like that...
I would bet they were following safety regs! 5 or not..she may have hurt herself!

Re: Did anyone just see on the news the little girl that was....
it snot incomprehensible...im a teacher and ive seen some kindergartners in a temper tantrum...ive even had to run after a few who were running out of the room and MY GOD they are stronger than you know!!!
I was being dragged by one bigger 5 year old so if this kid was really loosing it, well then restraints were necessary for others and even herself

As someone who has worked in a school where restraint techniques were used daily, I honestly think that EVERY teacher should be trained in the least restrictive method of restraint techniques. Because in a situation like this, a three person restraint would have been safer and more effective than handcuffing the girl. I've taken down kids who were twice my size and throwing chairs through windows, so I know anyone can do it. There's three basic holds that people should know to restrain someone. I just honestly think teachers should know this. Just like we practice CPR 'just in case' something happens, we should all practice restraints. JMHO.

yes but i do not think public school teachers are taught SCIP moves...and to be honest i don't think they should...They can get into a lot of trouble doing that!
AND i am sure they used handcuff because that was the safest way to transport the girl in the car!

I am so happy that I know this because I even feel like if God-forbid someone tries to attack me, even a rapist, I will know how to effectively get them off of me and keep them down. We did not use the same restraint techniques that police use because they really hurt the kids, but we did standing and seated basket holds and a floor restraint for more violent episodes. That's the two to three person restraint.

I'm not saying they should USE it. Especially because it is not allowed in public schools, but to protect a child in this situation, it would have been helpful. Not to mention all of the other situations that it is helpful in.

THAT IS THE VERY REASON WHY teachers in regular school aren't taught these things! The school and the teacher can be put in a risky situations!
and the course isn't that long and i am hoping you use the THEORY more than restraints!

well if you can't use it...why be trained in it It can only put a teacher in a compromising position!

Re: Did anyone just see on the news the little girl that was....
Once in summer camp, I had a child with serious issues and he began to bang his head against the wall really hard...when He didn't stop I took a huge chance and cradled him as I moved him away from the wall (hard to describe) but I figured I couldn't live with myself if he got hurt badly and I didn't do anything but it could've been the end of my career with children
I feel for the teacher who had to deal with this child sothat it got to the point where they had to film for protection

i do understand the situation but i think that teaching teachers techniques isn't a smart idea.

I have to say, if I was in this situation, I sure as hell would restrain the child. Let them sue me later. I wouldn't care. The safety of the child is the first and foremost thing, as far as I'm concerned. I'm assuming that there would be very, very few cases in which this would be relevant. I would risk losing my job to keep a child safe.
