I've mentioned Im going to Fhs cousins wedding next month. it's a black tie affair and I do own a couple of ballgowns. I have one velvet one, which is out of the question for a summer wedding, and I have a satin black one, but the thing is I wore it to FH's other cousin's wedding. I was going to buy anohter dress, but it just seems like such a huge expense and I realy love the gown I have. One side of the groom's family will have seen me wear it at the other wedding. I know you're not supposed to wear the same gown twice, etc, but do you think anyone would really notice? I don't feel like spending hundreds on a new gown, shoes, purse, etc!

my rule of thumb is...if the # of people who will be in attendance that have seen me in the dress before is less than 10...then I wear te dress....if not I find something else.

It's maybe around 15..but the other wedding was FH's 3rd cousins, so it's not like we're clsoe family and we ende dup in a lot of photos or they'd remember. My other options (besides buying a new dress) are to wear my Sr. prom dress, which is very bridesmaidy, or my MOH dress form my sister's wedding,ma lso very bridesmaidy, and I think I look like a cow in both of them...or I cna suck it up and buy a new gown

I tend not to wear the same thing to an event where the same people will be in attendance - either that or I make a joke about it if I have to. My sister spent a poopload of money on the dress for her son's bar mitzvah and wants to wear it again for my wedding which is three months later. My whole family will have already seen it but I told her for what she spent, she SHOULD wear it again.
Jen, it may be a long shot but if you are looking for a relatively inexpensive long dress, try the racks at Filene's basement. I was able to find a couple of simple Ralph Lauren LONG dresses (not ostentatious/gaudy gowns) - one in red and one in black and I wore each of them to black tie functions. I paid about $50 for each of them - probably less. I would also try Lord and Taylor.

I know you're not supposed to wear the same gown twice,
I hate the phrase *supposed to* or *not* supposed to...You can do whatever you want. Save money. Change the look of it with a different pair of shoes or a shawl or some different jewelry and a different hairstyle...

And, IMO, a black dress may not be remembered as vividly as a brighter color.

Exactly, I literally have **let me think** about 6?? maybe?? variations of black dresses.

The way I see it - if its for a wedding, the attention is going to be on the bride/groom - not on me, so its not that big a deal if I wear the same thing twice....Know what I mean? (or at least that's what I'm convincing myself as I'm wearing the same dress to a wedding this weekend...)

I never do, but I also never wear black, so I don't want to be known as the girl in the purple dress!

I have many friends who are my size, so we rotate dresses among our group. This is a perfect solution. We also all luckily have the same size feet.

I have a few dresses I rotate for parties. It's worked for me so far- and if I had to get a entirely new outfit for every single occaision, I would be broke.
Men can wear the same suit and never get noticed....So unfair!

2 of my friends from college have had the same suits for 7 years! I can definitely tell! One is a greenish so it stands out & teh other has a little tear, so that stand out! ( they are also really close freinds of mine though)

I have to say that after having a shower and getting married, I'm really never going to care much about what I wear to a wedding because seriously, as the bride, I had no recollection or thought or anything about what my guests were wearing.

I totally noticed. Especially at the receiving line! And even if I hadn't noticed, now I have pictures!

Wear the gown that you have. It's black satin, so it's not like it's some color that really stands out. It is unlikely that many people will remember what you wore. I try not to repeat dresses with the same group of people, but sometimes it just has to happen.
