Election Debate Over -- We're Talking Baseball Now

Original post by don424

OK, I promised an edgy thread and I am going to deliver

I've been seeing alot of political threads on here in the last week. Now, I'm cool with threads that deal with issues on how to better the country and things like that.

But I think there have been too many threads by Kerry supporters who are analyzing the election, saying the voting system is not fair, the young people didn;t come out to vote, Bush got in, now here comes the draft, the country is doomed, Bush voters aren't as educated as Kerry voters.

Which leads me to a question. When do you think is enough is enough? the election is over, Bush is in, like it or not. To waste energy complaining is pointless IMO, you're not gonna change it. I'm all for debating issues where you can have an impact i.e women's rghts, abortion, racial discrimination

But to complain about something that is over and cannot be changed, don't you think it's too extreme and kinda like beating a dead horse.

I'm Don Murphy and I approved this thread

The more people discuss it, the less likely it is that the same crap will happen again next time.

well all we heard in 2000 was how horrible and fixed our voting system is...

4 years later...same blah blah blah

sometimes talking issues to death is pointless

I'm definitely disgusted with the election results, and frankly the debates and discussion about the election possibly being rigged don't bother me at all. I don't trust anyone (any American politician or media outlet) at this point, and there were a lot of shady things going on throughout campaign season. I personally don't want to talk about it anymore, but I think it's important that people continue to question the way the system works (or no longer works) in this country. Conspiracy theories? Bring 'em on. Investigations of corporate malfeasance and election fraud? Bring 'em on.

and what purpose will this serve?

this is doubtful IMO

It's absolutely true that nothing much changed between the last election and this election, but that doesn't mean that people should just give up and accept a system that's flawed.

For example, imagine what would have happened if people just decided to stop talking about what was happening in Germany back in the 1930s and 1940s. 'Oh, a few people were carted off by some guys in black and haven't returned, but it was just a few people, so let's not talk about it. There's no point. There's nothing we can do about this Hitler guy.' Is this a dramatic example? Sure. But the underlying point is the same: if there is a problem, the problem should be discussed until it is solved. Tiny steps can make huge strides. Change takes time and effort.

Of course it's pointless to post about the election and such, especially after the election is over, but c'mon ..more pointless would be posting 'whats for lunch' at 3:00 but it's been done..
All threads have a hint of pointlessness to them. I dont mind the political ones if they stay 'nice'. AND I think it shouldn't be aimed at Kerry supporters because if Kerry had won, there would be a done of Bush supporters doing similiar things ya know?

Bottom line you ask?: PEOPLE are never satisfied!

Me too.

Our election system is an actual issue. It is one that is not just debated on LIW, but in our government and it started before 2000.The point in all honesty for me is not that the election was rigged so Bush could win. It is how can we create a system that people feel more confident in.

I would also like to add that most of the threads actually started with simple questions of 'Why Kerry?' or 'Why Bush?' then they built from that point. You also should take into consideration the fact that the election was only a week ago. Some of us actually put in time to help our candidate's election campaign and think that the coarse of the next 4 yrs is tremendiously important. Give time for the wounds to heal a little.

I think that describing what happened on someof our threads as giving time for wounds to heal is putting it lightly for what happened on some political threads. You can be a sourpuss like some and vent but not vent directly towards someone ... some crossed the line when they came after others whose views didnt jive with theirs, ignorant, uneducated, etc are not just venting. Its disrespect plain and simple..especially when it is aimed towards people who we expect to respond to respond to 'our' future posts. If we insult each other, I think you'll see less people interacting and I saw this beginning to happen..the boards slowed down..even with regards to the non political topics.

Re: The Election Debate

how long do we have to 'talk' about our voting process before it is fixed that such is satisfactory to democrats? When one wins?

I really don't think you can compare polling machines to germany..or hitler...

Your right the the threads started with a simple question Why Kerry? or Why Bush?
When people started to give their answers saying why they voted for Bush all the Kerry supporters started to jump down their throats. You know nothing about politics etc...You didn't see one Bush supporter jump down peoples throats for voting fo Kerry. My family and I are deep into politics and did a lot of campaining this year. I didn't post on any of the threads until the election was over. I didn't want people jumping down my throat because of my political views. Its just so ridiculous. The election is over, and Bush won. Get over it already. If all the Kerry supporters are upset, 4 years from now they can go and volunteer their time for the party they want to win. I said my peace.

Re: The Election Debate

I was one of those posters who somewhat joined in on the political/election threads...but after a while, enough was enough. I hadn't gotten any work done, my eyes were burning and I also felt that there were some people who just wanted to attack. SoI gave up politics and started pet peeves

Totally untrue. I've said a million times that my political views are further to the left than both of this year's major party presidential candidates. Please don't make assumptions about what I think. Thank you.

'Whatever.' I try to respond politely, and you say 'whatever.' Well, 'whatever' right back at you.

I wouldn't make such a guarantee about what would have happened if Bush had lost, considering the rather paranoid lengths to which the Republican party went to investigate 'suspicious' voters and purge voter rolls.

interesting way of trying to sound polite, but anyway, my whole point is this, in the past week on this board and off of it, i've heard read all sorts of things, from this group's vote not being counted, to sign in sheets not being collected and all other stuff.

My point is, ther election is over, kerry lost, there is no sense talking about something that cannot be changed. If you want to propose ways that we can fix it in the future, fine. I personally think it's pointless because you'll never get it to a point where eveyone is happy. There'll always be points of contention, so why bother.

And I stand by my gaurantee in saying that if Kerry had won, all those who are crying foul, would be rejoicing saying the system is fixed and it works and blah blah blah.

We as a country have to stop dwelling on the past and look to the future.
