Ethnic traditions in your wedding

Stolen from BHB. How are you all incorporating your heritage into your wedding?

My mom was born in Italy, came here when she was a teenager, and her family is very Italian so we are:

- having one of the readings in church in Italian
- having one of the prayers said in Italian
- having the program half in Italian/half English
- Playing a mix of ethnic Italian songs

Re: Ethnic traditions in your wedding

I'm half Italian and half Lithuanian. I dont know too much as far as wedding traditions for either of them but since I am 3rd generation American, I'm not doing anything ethnic.

Re: Ethnic traditions in your wedding

We will have Italian and Greek music at our wedding. I am 1st generation Italian and FH is 1st generation Greek. We will be doing the 'confetti' as well... which is part of both cultures.

Re: Ethnic traditions in your wedding

Apart from me being born and raised in Ireland, FH is 75%Irish/25% Scottish, so the men (other than my father) will be wearing kilts. I am going to put a penny in my shoe and have a small horseshoe on my garter (little traditions) and we'll put an Irish wedding blessing on the Mass program. We are also having an Irish band so that we can do some set-dancing. Oh, and a piper at the Church. I think that's enough!

Are you going to do the dollar dance? My mom's family is polish and they do it at every wedding and they think that we should do it at ours, but my FH and his family have never heard of it and dont want us to do it. I guess I was just wondering if anyone else will be doing the dollar dance?

i'm going to have a coin bearer, and i was thinking of also doing the candles, cord binding, and veil. i'm not really sure if i want to do all of them though, especially since we are not having a catholic ceremony, but i don't know if it's ok to just do some of them.

How about a giant lechon? I am thinking about it , but I'm sure my hall would charge extra to carve it. BTW who is doing your makeup?

It is so cool to read these ideas and how people bring culture and tradition into their ceremonies.

haha. my family would love it. we were actually thinking about doing a rehearsal dinner with filipino food (cooked by my grandmother) and chinese food (cooked by FI's mom). we would order the lechon though.

i haven't booked anyone for make-up yet. do you know anyone good? i got a make-over last week, and the lady messed up my eyeliner. me eyes are hard to do.

I love the Filipino/Chinese rehersal dinner idea!

Dina from Beautiful Possibilites and Jillian from Gorgeous Faces did my makeup, and I am having a hard time deciding!

1- im not seeing him the whole week before the wedding
2- were doing an unveiling before the ceremony called a bedekken. its basically me sitting in a chair and he comes in for a sec and unveils me to make sure its really me. hehehe

We are having a bagpiper since he is Scottish and Irish and I am Irish so we thought it would be nice to have outside the church.

7 times with both mothers leading you around him under the chuppah....

Also, if you are the last child to leave the house, you have your parents sit on the dance floor with wreaths around their heads and everyone dances around them....

Also, liftingt the couple and the relatives up on the chair...

My parents are hungarian/russian, but we're not really doing anything from that tradition except playing a few hungarian violin songs like the chardosh and russian classical songs during the CH
