Everyone who WANTS or THINKS they have a 'TEACUP' dog

the 'TEACUP' myth:

For those who are interested in a small dog, please visit the American Kennel Club and look through the list of TOY BREEDS. These include : Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Chihuahua ( long and short coat ), Chinese Crested, Italian Greyhound, Maltese, Mexican Hairless, Miniature Pinscher, Papillon, Pekingese, Pomeranian, Poodle, Pug, Silky Terrier and Yorkshire Terrier. ABSOLUTELY NONE OF THE TOY BREEDS COME IN A 'TEACUP' VARIETY.

'Teacup' was a term coined by those wishing to describe smaller specimens of the toy breeds, however the term 'teacup' is NOT one used by the AKC or CKC. This term is often used by dishonest people trying to make money from breeding toy dogs who do NOT adhere to the breed standard. Most of the toy breeds are between 8 and 12 inches at the shoulder, which is quite small. Small enough. Those who intentionally breed them to be smaller are endangering the puppies health. Many 'undersized' toy dogs are born with water on the brain. Some have the 'bug-eyed' look due to a skull and eye sockets that are too small to hold the eyes in place. This is not healthy, nor is it condoned by REPUTABLE BREEDERS. From time to time, each of us has had a puppy that was too small to show, but made a wonderful pet.

Please take the time to educate yourself on the many Toy breeds and find a reputable breeder who will help you choose the right puppy for you and your family.

You may also wish to consider adopting a toy breed from a reputable rescue group. Most reputable breeders also do rescue and will happily help you find the puppy that you are looking for.

The moral of the story....
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A TEACUP! People who breed and advertise them do not care for the welfare of the breed and are just out to make money.

my little shea is THE cutest thing going. she is considered a 'tea-cup' - she is 5 lbs. fully grown and the healthiest thing ever! although the term 'teacup' is used loosely, that is what she is.

Re: Everyone who WANTS or THINKS they have a 'TEACUP' dog

There is no such thing as teacup- either your breed is within breed standard- or it is not. My Chihuahua is 4 1/2 pounds- within the AKC breed standard.

Re: Everyone who WANTS or THINKS they have a 'TEACUP' dog

yorkies are SUPPOSED to be up to 6 lbs... so shes NOT a teacup... theres no such thing... the breeder obviously isnt reputable. sorry. i realized that after i got my chi, her breeder had 'teacup's for sale... i will NEVER go back to her again. if they DO try to breed extra tiny pups to call them 't-cups' its extremely unhealthy for the dogs. its just not good. i'm glad your dog is healthy, but 5 lbs is an average size, so i dont see why she wouldnt be, i doubt you'll have any majot problems with her in the future. paris hiltons chi on the other hand, i believe will have health issues later in life.. its too small.

Re: Everyone who WANTS or THINKS they have a 'TEACUP' dog

Bravo! A reputable breeder breeds ONLY to produce a litter closer to the breed standard! Most good Breeders interview YOU to see if the placement of their puppy is the right one for the puppy. If they are a breeder that shows dogs then they are producing a litter to obtain that perfect puppy for the show ring. If they are not showing then they are doing it for the money. A 'show' home does not make any money on the puppies. The money goes to show fees, handling fees, and stud fees etc. Their puppies are properly socialized and receive their shots and health exams before you even get them. If your lucky enough to get a puppy from this kind of breeder (most puppies are already placed before they are born) you should be able to ask the Breeder why they chose this particular mating. They should be able to say to off-set a long ear or tail set or better bone one parent complimenting the other. Good breeders also do a lot of genetic research before breeding to eliminate any congenital health defects. By the way NY state has a lemon law against bad breeding. If your puppy develops a congenital defect within the first year you are entitled to the price of the puppy or the vet bills back!

Re: Everyone who WANTS or THINKS they have a 'TEACUP' dog

I hate to be obnoxious but obviously you have a problem with my new doggie. My doggie is from a breeder with papers, he is a teacup. He will weighs btwn 5 & 6 lbs. A toy weighs 6-8lbs. I did the research, if you have a problem with me or my doggie you can feel free to FM us. NFT.

Re: Everyone who WANTS or THINKS they have a 'TEACUP' dog

why would you think i have a problem with your dog??????!?!!!!!!! no, theres no such thing as a tecup... look up 'teacup myth' on google or any search engine and you will find millions of sites. reputable breeders wont say 't-cup' it happens ALOT. people just dont knwo becuase so many ppl have the misconception due to all the pet shops and backyard breeders. i dont thin ktheres anythign wrong with your dog at all. and im hapy to hear you got from a breeder vs a puppymill pet shop dog. i found out AFTER i got my pup that her breeder wasnt a very honest person because she later started using the 't-cup' word.... AKC doesnt recognize 'teacup'. just because you call a dog a teeacup doesnt make it one. of course youre going to be defensive. i was too when i first found this out... but its the truth.

Re: Everyone who WANTS or THINKS they have a 'TEACUP' dog

i forgot, usually when ppl refer to teacup it means 2 or 3 lbs max. of course your maltese is going to be tiny. hes a toy breed, and he IS DEF adorabel. i truly dont have a problem with you or your doggy. just spreading the message. before you get mad or defensive just do a quick search on the t-cup myth, i promise youll see things differently.

Who cares whether the word teacup is legit. The fact is that they're smaller than the average toy, and they're really cute!

Re: Everyone who WANTS or THINKS they have a 'TEACUP' dog

teacups/toy dogs are cute and all. But, I believe in adopting from a shelter. Purebreeds can be found in rescues. Just go on petfinders.com
Save a life, adopt!!!

Re: Everyone who WANTS or THINKS they have a 'TEACUP' dog

adopting is great, but if you want a specific dog, you have to sometimes go to a breeder. theres nothing wrong with getting a dog from a breeder, sometimes they have dogs for free to adopt as well. some people like to show their dogs, so they cant get from a shelter. i got my first dog from North Shore Animal League. MY last two are from breeders. I got exactly what i wanted :) I love all my dogs, no matter where they come from .Breeding is a great thing, as long as you do it for the right reasons. And obviously adopting is also just as great, it takes a great person to adopt an older dog. Everytime i go to a shelter i want to bring them all home! The only place you should NEVER get a dog from is a pet store!

Ok, I'm in total agreement with you on the pet store bashing, HOWEVER, you DO save ONE life when you get a dog from a pet store. Especially if they've been there for most of their lives....

Re: Everyone who WANTS or THINKS they have a 'TEACUP' dog

I have a question then. I have a yorkie. She's about 5-6 lbs fully grown. She's called a 'teacup', but I've also seen Yorkies who were MUCH larger....so???
