Re: French Polynesia (Tahiti, Bora Bora, etc.) Honeymoons!!!!!!
Oh gosh I can't believe you got sick! What a shame! Glad you can say you enjoyed the flight anyway! We are flying out of LAX because our wedding will be in California. We will fly from JFK two weeks prior to the wedding. Used our mileage points so our travel agent saved us some $ doing these free tickets for us to and from LAX. So I guess I'll save a few hours. Yeah! My doctor says he'll give me some ambien to sleep. Sounds like a winner to me!best,

you will be fine on the flight- as long as u fly direct, and i totally recommend air tahiti.
the flight was wonderful.
we left ny at 545 and by 10:30 we were asleep, so hopefully you will sleep a lot of the trip.
plus, we walked around the plane and met a few other honeymooners.. some of them actually stayed at our hotel! it was great.
also, there are so many movies, and games and tons of things to do, you'll be fine.
i'm saying all this- and i dont know if most of you know what happened to me on the flight going.
6 hours in to the flight i got air sick and threw up every 20 minutes until landing! the flight attendant gave me dramamine but i threw that up too!
and i still rave about the flight!
on the way home, i took the dramamine before we left tahiti and i slept 8 of the 12 hour flight!
in response to the rental car- we rented scooters on moorea and it was great.. we drove around the entire island and took pictures at our leisure. as camacho said, there are no traffic lights, which is great. just be careful- people like to pass you!
i cant wait to go back!!!!!
Oh my gosh!! Throwing up is my worst nightmare...I get carsick going to mall during christmas when the traffic is bad...I can't even imagine myself on this plane!!!
But thanks girls for the words of encouragement!!! But seriously how do they go that far without re-fueling!!!!

Re: French Polynesia (Tahiti, Bora Bora, etc.) Honeymoons!!!!!!
I know I have a lot of time, but what are the laws in regard to what we can pack. I know 3 oz and under, but is this just for carry on? Can you bring full bottles of shampoo and stuff if you pack it in the bags you're checking? Also is 50lbs the limit for both ATN and AT (the inter-island flights)? How much liquor are you allowed to pack in your suitcases that you check when flying there? TIA!

Re: French Polynesia (Tahiti, Bora Bora, etc.) Honeymoons!!!!!!
Hi Dawn; Here's what I know from the print outs that my travel agent gave me. You can bring big bottles of liquid in your checked luggage. Just the 3oz ones in your carry on. Carry on luggage, one piece, 22lbs, plus one small personal thing like a purse or laptop. Checked baggage 50lbs. The intra island flights are 44lbs for the checked luggage. If you go over they charge a small fee.
You can bring up to two liters of liquor per person into tahiti. One wine, one hard liquor each person. She told me to buy it at the duty free and they will give it to me on the plane so I don't have to pack it and take up space. We love our wine and plan to bring a couple of expensive bottles from home. I heard the drinks are really expensive.
best,

Re: French Polynesia (Tahiti, Bora Bora, etc.) Honeymoons!!!!!!
Oops! I think I should clarify my post about the carry on stuff. You can bring 22lbs on the international flight but the intra island flights are only 6.6 lbs. There is a really good description on their website. Here is the address:http://www.airtahiti.com/faq.php?cat=Baggage
I think you can go over and pay a fee. At least that's what it sounds like on the website!

Re: French Polynesia (Tahiti, Bora Bora, etc.) Honeymoons!!!!!!
I got charged going on Air Tahiti Nui ($25 per bag so $50 total) for being overweight. Also was charged on Air Tahiti on our interisland flight from Moorea to Bora Bora - forget how much but not as much as on Air Tahiti Nui. Then I was charged again on my helicopter flight to Tahaa. Big pain and we totally did not overpack. It was a full 2 week trip - we ended up wearing every single thing we packed so I don't see how we could have done it any differently. The sunscreen bottles end up weighing a ton and trust me you need a lot of sunscreen....we used every last drop!
Don't bother with shampoo - just use what they give you in the hotels - they give nice stuff. You'll be weighed down enough - leave the large shampoo bottle at home!

how much is the approx for the airfare & did everyone do the direct flight out of NY?
I believe the flights are around $3000 per couple.
We are not flying direct because in October they only have direct flights on Wednesdays and Fridays (We're getting married on a Friday and didn't want to wait til Wednesday to leave, so we're leaving Sunday on a connecting flight).

For the interisland flights, it says,
A maximum of 3 baggage items per person can be checked-in on free-of-charge baggage allowance:
- baggage allowance: 10kg (22lbs)
- passenger booked in Y boarding class: 20kg (44lbs)
- passengers connecting to/from an international flight: 20kg (44lbs) with conditions apply
- an extra 5kg (11lbs) allowance is dedicated to divers. Proof must be provided at the time of check in.
Does that mean that we can have a TOTAL of 22 lbs for checked luggage???
I guess I'll probably be packing mostly bikinis and tank tops but still.....Luggage itself weighs about 5 lbs!

Re: French Polynesia (Tahiti, Bora Bora, etc.) Honeymoons!!!!!!
I think it means 44 lbs(since we are connecting from an international flight) per bag-so 3 bags at 44lbs isn't bad-I think FH and I are going to pack three medium suitcases and two carry-ons btwn us-its going to really s*ck walking through the airports!

Re: French Polynesia (Tahiti, Bora Bora, etc.) Honeymoons!!!!!!
It is definately 44lbs for your checked luggage on the intra island flights. This is the weight for people coming from an international flight. So you get more. If you are a diver (which we are) you can bring another 11lbs, just show your Naui card as we were told. The carry on is 6.6 lbs.We are packing light and have been told that dressing in the evening is pretty casual. No shirts and ties for my hubby to be!

Re: French Polynesia (Tahiti, Bora Bora, etc.) Honeymoons!!!!!!
when going out to dinner, the dress is very casual- island attire.i brought some cute sun dresses for some nights, and other nights i wore shorts and a cute top.
dh wore linen pants a few nights- he loved them, and a button down- linen shirt, or a hawaiian shirt.. he wore his sandals every night, he practically lived in them.
no ties- no way!

Re: French Polynesia (Tahiti, Bora Bora, etc.) Honeymoons!!!!!!
I'm trying to make a list of things i need to buy for the honeymoon.1) Did you buy and bring your own snorkel gear? If so...where would i be able to purchase one?
2) Do i need to have the water aqua shoes??
3) How much sunblock do i need to bring? I bought 2 bottles of Neutrogena SPF 55 from Costco the other day. Do i need more? Probably do right?
4) How much cash do i need to bring? Can i put everything on a credit card? Are there some places (like local grocery stores) that do not accept CC? If so, do i need to exchange the cash or do they accept US$?
6) Were you able to check in a litle earlier than the normal check-in time? The reason why i'm asking is that my flight arrives in Tahiti at 530am and we're planning to take the earliest ferry to Moorea and hopefully be able to check in our bags and start the day. If we're not able to check in i don't know what we will be able to do for all those hours with our luggage in tow.
SOrry so many questions...I'm getting really antsy about this trip. I'm really excited and i'm trying to put everything together!

1. We brought our own booties, fins, mask and snorkel, but thats because we went scuba diving. You can get a simple kit from Target, and that should be fine.
2. You don't need aqua shoes.
3. I think two bottles of sunblock is enough.
4. We charged nearly everything except stuff like bottled water, which we bought at the supermarket. They don't accept dollars, so change $100 USD to start. You can change money at the bank or at the front desk in the lobby.
5. We arrived earlier than check in, they held our bags so we could explore the hotel and town until our room was ready.

1. we used the snorkel gear the hotel provided. it was great.
2. u dont need water shoes.
3. we brought 8 bottles of sun screen- we like a variety.
4. we exchanged 100 dollars into xfp. the rest we put on credit card. it was great this way.
6. we stayed at the pearl on moorea and yes, we were able to check in early. our room was ready.
at the thalasso in bora bora, we had to wait about an hour but they entertained us in the meantime.
