With a years notice, would you rather attend a Friday night wedding or a Sunday night? I was thinking of trying to set the ceremony for around 3:00 ish....then 2 hours for pics....5:00 cocktail hour....party should end around 10:00...what do you think?

Gosh....why does this have to be so hard? I was thinking that if I was a guest, I would rather take Friday off, or leave early, and have a three day weekend. The majority of our guests are family. About 80%. Do you think they would still work if it was on a Friday?
Honestly, I think they would take off on friday if you had it then or they would take off on Monday if you had the wedding on Sunday.
Either way your guests will make arrangements to attend. And don't worry, they will have a good time. I've been to plenty of Sunday weddings and always had fun, whether or not I was going to work the next day. I haven't been to a friday wedding but the same would apply, people will have fun and celebrate.

I like Friday better than Sunday because you have the next day to relax and if people want to drink and stay out late they dont have to worry about going to work the next day. But I wouldnt choose 5:00 coctail hour only because most people have to work. If it's later , than people can still probably go to work and maybe theres a better chance for more people coming to the wedding then responding ' no' .

I like Friday better than Sunday. Depending on my relationship with the person I would take the day/half day and make it there in time for the ceremony. Sunday is tough...I feel like all I would be thinking is I have to work the next day, ya know?
That's exactly how I was thinking!
Thanks girls for all your help! I am putting the deposit down tomorrow, and wanted to have an idea of a day. The nice thing is, that it can be changed down the road if we change our minds....

You could always do the Sunday of a holiday weekend like we did

We went with friday because then you have the rest the weekend to rest and unwind. It basically makes it a nice three day weekend. That is always cool!!!

I like Friday weddings if they start later- like the ceremony at 5:30 or 6:00. If not it's hard to get to the ceremony without taking a day off of work. I've been to Sunday weddings that ended at 10 as well and still had a blast.

If you're doing an early wedding, I say sunday. If u can move the cocktail later, id say Friday..I dont like late sunday weddings bc of work the next day...not to say people wouldn't come, bc they do. Were doing a sunday wedding from 2-9...I was suprised to see how many ppl took monday off of work to have an excuse to cut the week short!! If u can make the cocktail later, friday, if not...then sunday!!
How much later should I make the CH? If I have the wedding and reception in the same location, what do the guests do? If I start the ceremony too late, it will be dark already.....
I think a CH earlier than 7ish on a friday is too early...btw rush hour and ppl's jobs, its a little hectic. Granted the ppl that are really close to u will probably take the day off anyways..in sept it doesnt get dark until 7ish anyway. HTH!

I dont mind friday weddings BUT unless its someone i am real close to or im in the bp i am not taking off of work...Not bc im mean but honestly i cant take off of work just like that and have to save my days, some ppl can take off whenever so its ok for them. This is why i strongly suggest making it later if you do friday. Yes some will take off or leave early obviously but a good amount won't. I would need the time to get home from work, get dressed and get there. So yes your close friends and family will be there the entire day, but your other guests won't be able to.

If you do it Friday, then I wouldn't do any of it so early. I'd have the whole thing start at 6 or 7 pm, and go straight from the ceremony to the reception.
A lot of people will probably skip the ceremony if it's so early in the day - I know I really can't take a day off whenever I want, so I'd have to miss it and just come to the party.
I guess it depends on your preferences though.

Re: Friday or Sunday?
My daughter had the same choice and chose the Friday nt. they are having their ceremony at 6 at the hall followed by the CH at 6:30-8:00 and reception 8:00-12:00. The most important people will definitely take off the whole day and most others we spoke to said it was no problem. The people that are traveling from out of state were happy too....they want to spend the weekend. The bridal party is thrilled...they are planning on making a weekend celebration, staying at a hotel and doing something together on Sat.

I'm having a Sunday night wedding. I love the idea of a Friday one, but I'm Jewish, and Rabbi's don't do weddings on Shabbat. So, I'm also not a morning person, so an afternoon wedding was out of the question. I'm having the ceremony at 6, CH at 6:30, so the whole thing will be over at 11:30. I'm sure the majority of people will take off Monday because most friends and family live in Brooklyn or Manhattan (me too!), but I had my heart set on getting married on the water, in the evening, in the summer. So, I think the bottom line is that you should do what you want to do, and you sound like you want a Friday night wedding. People who want to complain would complain about either a Friday or Sunday, those who are closest to you won't complain, and will take off. Don't drive yourself nuts, follow your gut! Either way, it will be wonderful!

Re: Friday or Sunday?
whatever day you choose.. whoever wants to be there will make the effort to be there.
personally, i picked sunday. people are already off, don't have to rush from work. also, i know plenty of people who go out during the week partying AND still make it to work the next day.
Again, you can't please everybody.. whoever will want to be there will be there
Good luck !

I would go to either one, ive stayed late sundays and went to work the next day, and i am used to fridays coming home jumping in the shower and going right back out bc i do it alot. But dont expect most guests to take off, bp, family they will. Doesn't mean they dont' care but just letting some ppl know that some of us cant take off whenever we want. Theres some ppl who haven't been at a job long enough so they can't, theres others who have very few days left. I can't take off whenever i want, and i cant take off unless someone is there to cover me, and the group i work with have been there for 10+ years and they get priority, one girl has to constantly take off bc of medical reasons, and its been this whole year, not to mention the others, up until recently this whole year i felt like every week i was covering for someone. So if i take off and leave all the work for 1 person to do then it would look REAL bad on my part.
I think when most of us plan weddings we think of very close friends and family, and that should be expected of them...For themajority of our guests, i wouldn't expect such things. I always see ppl on here say oh dont worry most ppl will take off, but lets say you have 200 guests, i wouldn't even expect half to do so.

Re: Friday or Sunday?
i am sure most people will deal with the situation. wheather it be leaving work early on a friday or just feel tired the next day at work if its on sunday.. you don't get married everyday & most people i know won't complain. they just want to be there to share your special day... AND if they do big deal.. you can't and don't even try to please everybody.
I try to accomodate my immediate family .. and that's as far as it goes.

The issue of a Sunday night wedding never occured to me until this board. I guess because most of my friends and family work in service fields with flexible shifts and days. Like in nursing I only work 3 nights a week! But I find no matter what, people have fun and deal with it as you said. I think it really comes down to what is best for your family and those close to you. Like I mentioned. My MOH will be in nursing school with clinicals until 2p which would make it hard to make it for pictures by 3p.

you do just deal with, you have to do whats best for you and thats it, if you sat here and thought about what would be best for everyone then we wouldn't come up with anything. But with that said ppl just have to be prepared for certain things and not mind it, like if you have a late sunday night wedding you have to think about the fact that some will leave early...If you do friday and start it a bit early then dont expect alot for the ceremony, which personally i dont think you should expect most guests at the ceremony period no matter what day or time

Re: Friday or Sunday?
Im getting married on a Sunday night , I have been to many sun night weddings and all were soo much fun. I have been to two weddings on a Fri and I had to rush out of work, the other time I had to take off, its just crazy on Fridays, people getting out of work, traffic, etc etc. Sundays are more relaxed.

Re: Friday or Sunday?
We chose Sunday also because we have a lot of OOT people driving down and weighed all sorts of factors like traffic, as well as taking time off work. Fridays are always crazy and I just thought it would be too stressful for our oot people as well as people getting out of work to come. We knew our guest would have to take a day off work anyway so we figured this would give them an excuse to take Monday off, which almost all are doing.
