Marcela - How was the swearing in??
It was NOT what I expected
You have to get there early for them to tell you what's going to happen; how much you have to pay for the scroll and certificate of good standing, etc. Then you file into the Court room. Then the Clerk again goes over everything; calls out the names of the candidates to take attendance. Then the judges come out, one judge says a speech and then recites the oath and the candidates only say 'I Do' (for some reason I thought we recited the oath ourselves). Then the judges leave. Then the court officer asks all the guests to leave so the candidates can sign the 'attorneys roll book' (every attorney admitted in the 2nd dep't has signed this book). My mom and I were actually pissed that she wasn't allowed to see me and take pics of me signing the attorney book since that is really when you become an attorney.
They told us that if you don't sign the book, you're not an attorney. After you sign, there's a cash register right at the door way so you can pay the $25 for a scroll that takes a year to come in
Then if you want a certificate of good standing, you have to go to the Clerk's office and pay another $5 per certificate (you need a certificate to get your notary license). And that's it.
ETA: Debbie, is this how it was for you?

Re: Greek Brides??
Congratulations!!!!!!!Yup!!!! That is exactly how it was for me too. I should have warned you, but i didnt want to ruin it for you. I just remember thinking... i hope they didnt call my name and i missed it
LIMom, glad you liked the place. Which stefana did you end up picking? my moh is very involved and she wants to surprise me, which is totally cool, but i dont get to pick
But she has great taste, so i am not complaining. Future Koubara mou, if you are reading this, i like...

Re: Greek Brides??
i dont even know whether or not they send my scroll.... they probably did... guess i'll find it when i move out!Hey, you are now officially Marcella, Esq. Dont forget to apply for your notary stamp if you have not already... i waited and then one day, i needed it and didnt have it. so dont wait for the day you are going to need it. and i'm sure they told you, but you can also get your real estate broker license. But from what i remember, it's like $200 - so if you dont need it, treat Peter to dinner and drinks instead.
Demetra, how are you feeling??????
When is your due date?

Re: Greek Brides??
They better send me the freaking scroll
I cannot believe it takes one year
Yes I need my notary stamp. I'm going to apply next week since the cert. of good standing is valid for only 30 days. As for the real estate license, I'm probably going to get it. I may want to do that on the side eventually. But $200 is a lot

Re: Greek Brides??
Deby, my daughter was very concerned about stefana that might get caught in her hair. We saw it happen once and the priest pulled and pulled on the girl's hair. In the end he had to ask the koumbara to untangle it. She chose something flat with pearls. They are called iridescent stefana. The stefanothiki she chose is gorgeous. They are out of stock right now and I really hope we get it before her shower. It's called the contessa. It's heart shaped walnut wood with a beautiful silver design.
I'd love to see what everyone else chose. Portara is the only store we went to so I don't know what other designs are available. I honestly didn't want to go to Astoria and contend with double parked cars and congested parking lots.

Re: Greek Brides??
Dont panic!!!! We didnt have to memorize the Pistevo (St. Catherine's Church), but if you are at another church, why dont you call the church secretary to double-check?Oh, my sis-in-law said that she saw a two-bedroom garden bay terrace coop for sale in the paper this weekend. I think they were asking about 260 or 265k. Where else are you looking?
We are getting closer to signing a K for the coop! I am so nervous... seems like everything is moving so fast!
LIMom, I hear you
The traffic in astoria is horrendous lately
and the traffic cops seem to be ticketing the wrong people!

Re: Greek Brides??
I am not sure what newspaper... probably newsday though. Do you have a good agent? If you dont I can recommend ours... she's very attentive compared to some of the other ones out there.

Re: Greek Brides??
right now we dont have an agent per se - well we do - its wierd- it is an agent that is friends with FH's boss. He gave us his password and he told us to look up what we want and then when we get a bunch he'll show them to us - but that kinda sucks because we are doing all teh work and by the time that he shows them to us - they are in contract.
Actually can you give us your agent's name? We are going to give this set up that we have another chance and then do it through an agent - i think its more so that were arent rushing to get somehting right this moment - well FH isnt - i woudl rahter have a place sooner than later - but a lot of it is money issues- paying mortgage and maintenance months before we move in.
Have you seen any of the coops from the Estates of Bayside? If you have- what do you think of them?

Re: Greek Brides??
Another Greek bride here...Half Greek..raised Catholic. I am having a Catholic ceremony though since my FH and I are both Catholic. I think if people in your families will be in Greece before the wedding, Greek favors would be great. As for Monica, I'm really shocked someone could be that rude on a nice friendly website like this...obviously a low class piece of work

Re: Greek Brides??
Georgia, I have not seen any of the estates coops except from the outside... they looked nice, but the ones I had addresses for (I believe thru Foxton's) were in a part of Bayside that I didnt like as much ... There are a lot of co-ops there, but the two in particular I saw were within 2-3 blocks from Springfield Blvs/LIE. So I did not pursue it. If they were even a few more blocks 'in', it would have been great. There are two types of co-ops there... the estates and something else. Some of them have little balconies, which seemed nice, cause you can have a small bbq, or have a smoking section out there. As far as the timing of buying one... I would say it takes at least three to 3.5 months to close on a co-op (uless you are in a hurry and pushing things along).
Hey, there is an open house on a two bedroom tonight in Little Neck... I think from 5:30 to 7:30. It's a corner lower level, kind of like in a cul de sac (it's behind some other co-ops). Call your agent (or mine) if you want to take a look at it. I have not seen it myself. They are asking $216,000.
FM about real estate agent.
Welcome Andrea!
