Re: Greek Brides??

Hi Georgia,

Thank you for asking. I'm doing well. I've been traveling a bit for work lately and haven't had time to come on the boards.

On the personal front, we are renovating our house (kitchen & bathroom) and I'm helping my cousin plan her wedding. She asked me to be her moh.....I'm so excited. We just had her shower.

Otherwise, not much else going on. I can't believe everyones' weddings are right around the corner. How exciting.

I love the stephana you picked out. They are beautiful and different. Very nice.

I hope you are all well.

Re: Greek Brides??

Question:

In the Greek Orthodox faith - is there a difference between using the term 'baptism' and 'christening'?

Re: Greek Brides??

hmmmmm....don't know if there is a difference between baptism & christining? Maybe you can call your church office? They should know.

My cousin is getting married at Carlyle on the Green in the spring.

Re: Greek Brides??

Hi girls..

My FH is Greek. We are getting married in both the GO church and the catholic church. Our wedding will be pretty much Greek/Italian. I can't wait for the Greek dancing at my wedding!! I am so glad there is a Greek thread on here. I am sure I will have many questions to ask as my day approaches. I just wanted to to introduce myself to you guys. Although, I have had some interaction with you some of you already.

Re: Greek Brides??

So FH and I are going back to Greece this summer. Is there anything I should look to buy for my wedding while I am there? We are gonna go to Italy too (my family lives there). My cousin's friend makes favors. So, I am thinking of buying the little confetti flowers they put together to use for our favors.

Re: Greek Brides??

Hi Rosanne!!

A good thing to get in greece are the stefana (those are the crowns) and a stefanothiki (its the box that holds the crowns. The stefana that are sold in astoria mostly come from greece so you will have a better selection there at lower prices.

Re: Greek Brides??

Isn't our koumbaro supposed to get them? If so, do you think they would be insulted if we picked them out? I don't want to hurt any feelings.

Re: Greek Brides??

The koumbaro is supposed to get them - but if you talk to them about it - then you can prevent anyone getting insulted about it. My koumbaro is my FH's brother - i told him before hand i would really like it if I could pic out the stefana and the lambades - and he said no problem - i'm going to with him to look - but i'm making the decision. The stefanothiki is something you get though - not the koubaro - or at least as far as I know.

You can also probably get really nice silver icons in Greece.

Re: Greek Brides??

Our koumbaro is also FH brother and wife. We are really close to them. I think I will mention to them that I would like to buy them in Greece. I already told them the type of favor I wanted. They were fine with it. I guess they will be ok with this too. Actually, I would probably be doing her a favor since she is 3 mon. pregnant.

Re: Greek Brides??

I'm also going with our koubaro (FH's brother) to pick out the stefana and lambades.

Girls, I had my shower this weekend and FMIL bought us a BEAUTIFUL stefanothiki and icon. I love them

ETA to add pic: Here is our stefanothiki. This pic really doesn't do it justice. It's so much prettier in person.

Hi Irene Good Luck with the renovations.

Re: Greek Brides??

Hi girls-another Greek bride here, this thread is great, has definetly given me something to read through when I need a break at work.

I'm looking for a place to have a small engagement party for about 50 people-preferably Greek. I don't want to go into Astoria though, because most of my guests are coming from LI-seems too far out of the way for them.

The only place that comes to mind is Laterna in Bayside-Has anyone been to a party there? If so, what did you think of it? Any other suggestions??
Look forward to hearing from all!!

Re: Greek Brides??

Hi Betty! Welcome!

I live close to the Laterna. It's a good restaurant. However, they're expensive. Fh's friends looked into for their eparty and they were charging $75 a head (they charge you extra b/c there's a band there on Fridays and Saturdays). His friends ended up at the Zodiac Cafe in Astoria. Another Greek rest. in Bayside is Mythos. It's good also, but I don't know what they charge.

Good Luck

Re: Greek Brides??

Hi!

Laterna is a great choice.

They threw my shower at caffe on the green, which was also wonderful. Not usre what the minimum # of people is for the upstairs room though.

Re: Greek Brides??

Hi Betty,

Congratulations and welcome to the boards and our thread!

Laterna is a very good place but as you may know, they do not have a private room. If you don't mind other people being there, then go for it.

I had my rehearsal dinner party (approx. 75 people) at Mythos. They have a room downstairs (but it is in the basement and has no windows.) However, the food/service was great and they gave us a very good price. They have a dance floor and you can either use their dj or hire your own dj/band.

As menitoned, Cafe on the Green is another good choice.

Best of luck to you.
