Heated debate with mother

Original post by firegal

I've been having an argument with my mom for the past 15 minutes about favors for the wedding. She asked me to go to you ladies to settle the dispute. Do the wedding favors get put on the guests tables before the wedding begins or do you hand them to each guest as they leave or hand you envelope. Mom says the latter is proper but I think she's thinking back to her wedding 35 years ago!!!

I would hope that no one would steal them (although FH's family was stealing the extras from my engagment party ). I'm hoping that Mom's idea of getting the clear frosted bags will help eliminate people taking extras (I think it would be obvious if people are walking out with two bags)

My favors were NOT on the table but were displayed at the end of the night on big silver trays by the exit.... the reason we did this is because I worked VERY hard on my centerpieces and I did not want the favor cluttering the table- if you are handing out a few favors and presenting them in a bag, I would put them on a separate table for the guests to take @ the end of the night.

I must be in a good mood today bec. I am sooo laughing over this. We too are having this same dilemma. At all the Greek weddings I've gone to they are given out as people come to say good night and 'pay for their dinner'. We all realize that is how it looks but no one I know has tried otherwise. Besides some guests not knowing it will be only one per couple, what about people who come alone? You'll have to make a list for the caterer telling him how many favors per table and then the guests need to be savvy enough to figure it out for themselves.
I don't know. I'm doing a lot of sewing here this summer and I hate to have the favors messed up.
More ideas please.

I have Never been to a wedding where people have Stolen someone elses favor if they are sitting right in front of it all night that is kinda rude.

Thats what the catering hall gets paid to do is set up the favors They are suppose 2 know who is bringing someone who is not.

Yea, the catering hall has a list of the couples/singles at each table and should know how many to put at each table. The bags are small and the centerpieces are high so I don't think they are going to be cluttered but the tray idea does sound nice. We aren't having placecards - we're doing a seating board so that will be one less thing to clutter up the table.

I put them on the table but have seen both with on the table being much more common.

The ones I have seen handed out were mostly weddings that were 5+ years ago and the one I recall best was a Greek wedding (LIMom - I laughed when I read your response.)

both are correct and often depends on the favor. I gave Krispy Kreme donuts (2 pack boxes) to each guest as they left the reception. But I know many girls who put their favors on the tables- such as choc. boxes, CDs, etc... It also depends on the size of the favor and tables. So you are both correct and you should only do what is best for your favor.

handing them out individually yourself at the end of the night is not practical with a larger wedding (see over 50 people)

If you have them sitting at the exit (when there is one for each person) you could have them pick them up as you leave-otherwise you would need to stand at the door towards the end to hand them out

Remember NOT everyone will stay until the end of the night - and sometimes people will slip out if you are busy without saying good night - then that person won't get their favor -

And if people leave early then what would you say to them - hold on and run and get the favor and run back - that could get complicated

Yes Niecey - that's why I was laughing too. There's always a long line, you say good night, give your envelope and get your favor. I've always wondered about guests who may be sending a gift in the mail. Does the bride feel they don't deserve a favor????

(Excuse me gals if I'm getting silly. Not enough sun and too much sewing. My eyes are crossed. I love getting up to check the computer when responses come in. I love you all.)

I always thought to put them on the table so that you can make one different from the others on the table and the person who gets that one gets to take home the centerpiece....that's what we're doing...but we're also giving one favor per person, so that it might be easier that way.

i say it's your wedding - your decision!

I'm going to hand them out for two reasons, don't trust that they will take just one and I would not like to see crowded table tops. Its our families I don't trust :o) our friends we would trust!!

On the table - who could be bothered handing them to people as you go along. I really don't think that people will take more than one. I'm sure someone at the table would say something to them if they tried.

If people leave at different times, you have to keep going to your favors to give them one! Sounds like a pain.

LImom.. i kinda like the idea of giving them when you ' pay for the dinner'... i know a few people who will be coming empty handed.. that would be perfect

but i will stick to placing them on the table...
