i want to be - but im afraid to because of stories ive heard about them letting you die! i dont know if its true but its enough to scare me into not being one....

It's unethical to let a patient die if they can be saved just to save another life. Doesn't that go against the Hippocratic Oath that they took before becoming doctors?

You're right. i have no reason to not be a donor

Yes. And please specify that you want to donate your eyes. That's not included when you simply say you're an organ donor. I only say this as my grandfather donated his eyes and years later we received a letter from a man who was legally blind until age 21....he now has 20/20 vision. He wrote a beautiful letter about seeing the world through my grandfather's eyes. So touching.....

That is amazing. I did tell my family that my eyes can go too but I didn't know that it wasn't included when you agree to be a donor.

Me too!! I want to be one in the worst way because I agree, I don't need them and if they can save a life then I think that is great... I'm just scared they'd pull the plug on me without giving me a fair chance.

That would be against their Hippocratic Oath.

MOST would stand by it, but unfortunately there are unethical people out there...Thats why alot of money is offered on the black market for organs, in order for this to even go on i think some doctors are involved. BUt the thread is about being an organ donor so enough of my conspiracy theories

I was watching a special on this the other week. It is really scary what goes on in the black market.

sometimes a doctor will have a young child in their hospital for days and about to die JUST waiting for a specific organ...They've been with the child, seen the parents suffering and i think this is why some people are scared

it is so true...you'll have an extremely rich person who'll need a certain organ and you know what they'll pay top dollar and pay doctor to be put on the top of the list or do whatever it takes to have the procedure done. In order for this to happen there are doctors, staff and whomever else who are involved.

If you check off organ donor, it's just internal organs (supposedly). You need to specify eyes and skin if you want to do so. My grandfather donate his skin also and we were told that 4 children (burn victims) received skin grafts from him. After his donation we got a letter stating how many were touched by him. It was beautiful. I believe 4 people received skin, the young man received his eyes, and 4 people received organs. It really made me see the power of organ donation.

I am. I don't believe in the urban legend business that you will they will not attempt as diligently to save your life if you are a donor. If they can use it they are welcome to it...although as FH and I say, we doubt they can make much use of our liver or lungs,...lol (I'm terrible )

No, because I plan to donate my body after I'm dead and I believe it needs to be intact.

What do you mean? I've never heard of it!! educate me, please!

Indeed. My sister is in school to become a Physical Therapist and she's doing her cadaver disection this semester. I have always been extremely facinated by these sort of things (I used to want to be a medical examiner, however being around all that death changes you as a person and I decided to not follow thru) soooo anyway, she was really grossed out by the thought of doing it and me being the person I am felt the need to convice her what a fantastic opportunity it was not only for her career but for her to get to know her body better. I told her to try to get over her fear and take as much as possible away from the experience. Long story short she really came around to it and her experience kind of pushed me over. I'm looking into how I make sure it's done, I want to be creamated anyway so I don't think it's a big deal if it can help people learn.

BUT that being said I hope one day to change my mind. I truly want too donate parts of me to help others but there is a bit of me that just can't let go of my body to someone else.

Re: Here is a touchy topic for the day!!!

I am and I have it on my license!

I do not need my organs...so if someone else can live because of me I am more than willing to allow that. Now if that urban legend is true about the EMT people letting you die wouldn't there be alot of law suits going around...???

I know I would sue if a family member was in a terrible car accident and I was there to witness it and I saw that the EMTs weren't providing their best service! GEEZ to think people even think that 'hey let this person die because we got a heart, lung, live, eyes- now 4 more people can survive!!'

THATS CRAZY!!

Yea and a lot of people who can't get an organ in the US travel to other countries like China and they only have to wait 3 days to get an organ as opposed to the years they would have to wait in the US. It is sick though they showed how people are forced to donate organs and some people from really poor countries donate organs to make money to survive and then they never even pay these people for their organs. It is so sad.

Re: Here is a touchy topic for the day!!!

My 2nd cousin passed away a few years ago and his heart was able to go to somebody...the immediate family was asked if they wanted to meet the person that the heart went to. It was very emotional.

Re: Here is a touchy topic for the day!!!

I would like to. Because I was REALLY sick when I was younger, I almost died, needed blood transfusions and I saw all those children who were dying because they needed organs and I vowed to help them one day.

I talked to Fh about this the other day though and he's totally against it. But my mom knows my wishes and although she doesn't agree with it, understand why.

I won't sign my license though because of the stories I've heard too. Even though I know it's unethical, it still worries me.
