In the most romantic, sweetest way...
It was VERY romantic.
Hope you have a few minutes to spare...
Last summer, FH said we should do something (didn't say what). Then a few weeks later, we were at his softball game, drinking beers afterward, and he slipped and said 'Oh we never went on our picnic.' He blew his own surprise.
So last week, he suggested we do something on Saturday because it will be nice. So I said, 'we can go on our picnic.' He was bummed that I brought it up but we're doing it anyway. So he picks me up at my house around 3 on Saturday and says that it's free parking after 4 at the park we're going to and since the picnic is not a surprise, he's taking me somewhere else first and either I can be surprised and keep my eyes closed or keep my eyes open and see where we're going. I opted to be surprised. So we're driving for a while and I can feel the sun beat through my eyelids so I think we're going to the beach to take a romantic walk. Instead, when I open my eyes, we're at the place where we worked and met (the company moved off LI). Then we go to where we first 'flirted', then to where we had our second date, then to where we danced at a lot of happy hours, then to where we had our first date. I'm thinking we're just killing time for free parking... I'm completely clueless.
So now we arrive at the park, there's no free parking after 4 (which he knew, it was just a ploy). So we find a spot by the lake, and he sets everything up. He unpacks a sterno for spaghetti and meatballs (my favorite), whips out a single rose in a bud vase, lights a candle, then as he goes to sit down, he jumps back up and brings out a box of rose petals that he sprinkles all over our blanket. How sweet is he? I'm such a lucky girl. I'm still clueless because I think we're just having a romantic picnic because we don't get to see each other a lot. So we're relaxing, eating chips, drinking soda, talking, laughing, relaxing, we take a nap while spaghetti's warming. He brings out a bottle of my favorite wine and we eat the spaghetti. All very romantic. Still clueless, just thinking we're being romantic (it's not out of the ordinary for FH). So afterwards, we play some volleyball, then eat dessert - strawberries. My favorite! FH doesn't even like them - I should have known then. So when we're finished, we pack up and are about to bring everything to the car when he whips out a bottle of champagne and two huge plastic margherita glasses (he got them on sale at Target and thought they were 'fancy'- how sweet/cute/adorable is that?!?!?!?!) So we pack the car and take the champagne and glasses with us - we're going to take a walk around the lake. So we're walking around the lake and come to a secluded spot, there are two guys fishing about 50 yards away. So he pours the champagne and says, 'before we drink it I have a poem I want to read to you'. I still have NO idea, it's not the first time FH has written me a poem. It's titled 'When Two Become One, You and Me'. Again, I should have known then, but I didn't think we'd be engaged until the end of the summer. So he starts reading and gets about halfway, then the two guys fishing come to like 10 feet from where we are. FH gets mad, and says, 'come behind this tree', so we go behind the tree and he starts over. The two guys then start walking to where we are AGAIN. FH is like 'SON OF A...., these guys are KILLING me.' So now I have a teeny, tiny idea but still thinking, 'no, it's too soon.' So he starts over again and by the time he gets to the last paragraph, I know. It says I love you forever, I want to spend the rest of my life with you, we're soul mates.... So I start hysterical crying, he starts crying, then he finishes the poem, gets down on one knee and says, 'I love you so much and want to spend the rest of my life with you, will you marry me?' I am crying so hard and smiling and I said 'Oh my god, yes, I love you'.
So I still cry when I think about it, I'm so incredibly lucky. I am the luckiest girl in the world.
