How do you feel about naming a child after yourself?
Original post by marymoon
Thisnis far more common with men.
I have a few like this in my family..but I SERIOUS:Y don't get it. It just seems SO egotistical to me. let the poor kid have his own name!

Re: How do you feel about naming a child after yourself?
Well I'm actually named after my FATHER and Mother, so I cannot complain. (my Dad's name is Felix.. rather the Italian version of Felix, Felice) I used to hate my name as a child, but have grown to love it over the years. Middle name is after my Mom)
DH is named for his grandfather. Everyone in DH's family is William, Anthony, Peter , or some combination thereof (i,e., Anthony William, Peter Anthony, William Peter. etc.. its pretty funny)
I doubt we'll name our children after anyone, because we'll wind up being among the last of our siblings and cousins on both sides to have kids, so the 'names' have already been carried on

I always considered it more of a family tradition versus being egotistical. If I was a boy, I was going to be named after my father and I would have been proud to have his name.
I happen to agree - I always thought that when someone was a junior or 1st 2nd 3rd and so on it was because of a tradition in that family - Not based on being egotistical.

I dont like it only because I feel that they should have their own unique name.

I'm named after my grandfather and I guess my uncle bc he's a Jr. Even though their name was Stephan, everyone called my grandfather Poppy and my uncle Stevie. I am so honored to have my grandfather's name, he was a wonderful person who I had a special bond with.
My brother is a jr and there's no confusion. My dad tends to be called by his middle name. When my brother was little we called him Junior and now we call him by his first name.
DH is not interested in naming a son after him. I don't mind but he thinks the child shoul have it's own name.

I don't like the whole jr thing. Naming after someone who is deceased is fine. I feel this way because every man born in my mom's family is named either John or Charles. My grandfather was John, I have an Uncle John who sons are John and Chuckie and an Uncle Chuckie, whose son's name is John. On top of that my cousin Shane married a man named John and my ex-husband's name was John. Whoa! that's a mouthful. You should see our christmas tags, they need full length descriptions to know who they are for.

I'm a hypocrite I like my name but refuse to name a child after anyone in the family. If I have a daughter I might use my name as her middle name.

I wouldn't name my kid after myself or DH. I would however name for someone deceased, but that's how it's done in my family. My sister's middle name if Faye for my mother's mother. My Hebrew name is Anna for my mother's father (Abraham). My niece's middle name is Sarine for my fathers mother. And I will name my child with a name that starts with A for my father's father (Augusto). If it's a girl maybe Payton August.

our nephew is named after his dad, and he has a differnt middle name..it's a little confusing for the baby b/c he only knows himself by his first and middle name....If you just call him hi first name he stares at you blankly..LOL

I think its boring. Why not give the child their own name, theirs alone.

My name is Anthony William My brother's name is William Anthony My father's name is William Anthony My grandfather's name is Anthony
We are not very original....
A little side note to this:
If you are thinking of naming your children after yourself or your spouse, think twice. I work with people's credit every day and I see so many 'same named' relatives with their 'same named' son or daughter's credit showing up on their credit report....usually it isn't their good credit either.

Re: How do you feel about naming a child after yourself?
I am so against this. I have the same name as my mother (different middle names) and my oldest brother has the same name as my father. (different middle names)
It is so annoying to have the same name. We have different nicknames, but as far as important documents, it is so annoying. For example, we go to the same medical practice, so that always gets screwed up. I've had her medical records sent to me by mistake.
Another example is that my parents live in Florida for the winter, and my mom couldn't have her mail forwarded because then my mail would get forwarded. Then when I got married and moved out, I couldn't have my mail forwarded, because then her mail would have been forwarded!

My brother is the 4th generation of his first name. When he was born family arguments began cuz mom refused to keep the middle name. So, mom kind of broke the tradition and gram wasnt too happy. My brother will not name his son after him @ all. He's already warned everyone. LOL I will not name my daughter after my 1st name, however, my middle name is Ann and I love the name Anna so I may work around that

Re: How do you feel about naming a child after yourself?
I knew a girl in college who was named after her mother. She was really screwed up. We used to say it was because she was named after her mother, but I know that is not the reason. Still though, it was just weird. 'Hi, I'm Cathy, this is my daughter...Cathy.' Blech.
FH and I fight about this. He is a JR, and I hate the concept. He wants our son to be Nick III.
No freaking way.

The worst is I work in Health insurance, so when these two twins go to the Dr. we cannot figure out WHO ITS FOR? They have the same intials and Date of birth...Its crazy!
