Mine is $500 and then an additional $200 for the singer and organist (and if i dont use the church's singer and organist I still have to pay the $200 )

same thing with me- i wanted a violinist but I would still have to pay the organist

What I don't understand if its suppose to be an offering or donation shouldn't it be up to your discretion how much you want to give? The priest should say the fee for marriage is $$$, most churches say the donation or offereing is $$$.
On another note since we are donating or giving an offering in the terms of the church, can we get a tax receipt? Technically we are donating right?

i think it is considered a donation so get a receipt and see if it is tax deductible!

and the reason that it is a 'required' donation is that a lot of people feel that the church shouldnt get the money AND they are just getting married at the church for a 'pretty background' so they dont really care if there is no heat in the winter or A/C in the summer SO they will be jerks and give like $50 - unfortunately that is human nature

Actually, FH is NOT a religious person at all and when he saw the state that the rectory was in he suggested that we donate MORE than what is suggested because he was so upset by it

As he said, we entrust the church to baptize our children, give them communion and confirmation, hold our weddings and funerals. All of the major events in MY Life are marked by the church. and they are living in pretty terrible conditions - all of the furniture in there is AT LEAST 40 years old. . . its really sad.

i think you can get a tax receipt or at least claim this on your taxes, should be able to.

I agree, im actually finding it funny how im sticking up for the church bc for one im not even catholic and i have ALOT of problems with organized religion but when it comes down to it in order for a church to stay open they need the money and this will come from church fees and donations. Telling us how much we HAVE to give then yeah thats different, but i guess its bc most ppl wouldnt give alot im guessing not sure.

I have problems with other things rather than the fee, like the fact that I HAVE to sign a paper saying I will baptise my kids catholic, this is really bothering me, the reason i have to do it is bc im not catholic...but who is to say my kids HAVE to be, its just the whole concept that im being told what my kids HAVE to be

idk that kind of makes sense to me in a way - i am sorry that you are offended by it

but if you are getting married in a catholic church, it makes sense that you would raise your kids catholic ( from the church's POV )

LOL why do i always get drawn into the religious debates!

yeah but what if i compromised to get married in a catholic church but my agreement was to make my kids my religion. I mean i would understand if they asked us 'so are you going to baptise your kids catholic' and even if they tried to talk to me about doing so but to sign papers hmmmm i am not that thrilled about it. I mean we both are different religions so maybe we choose to incorporate both religions into our life somehow and maybe one is baptising them christian orthodox...i dont have anything planned though but i personally think anything to do with our kids is a decision that should be made JUST between FH and I

hahhaha its ok were all just stating our opinions, nothing wrong with that and not like were attacking eachother...Everyone is entitled to their opinion and i can respect your point of view, a little debate here and there is not bad

omg! Our church doesn't require one. But we are just giving an offering of $100.

I'm shocked at your prices!!!

I thought you had to give a donation when you get married in a catholic church? thats what i always heard, i honestly thought the donation alone would be what my total cost is.

ALSO im with tilde on this, out of all wedding expenses im not gonna complain about this...we spend ridiculous amounts on so many things and dont bat an eye well maybe but still itll be fine. Out of all things this is one of the least expensive and meanwhile its for the church and the actual place where you are married so not a big deal. Ppl will spend that much on a dress, veil, accessories, place cards or whatever and not worry but for the church everyone is like

Oh I'm not getting married in a Catholic Church.

OH YEAH and you and I have the best debates so its all good - all these posts and never any ill will! LOL

I get what you are saying that it should be between the two of you but i think what the church is saying that PART of the catholic marriage is raising the kids catholic so that is why they feel justified making you sign that document

but i am sure its not legal binding and i am SURE your culture and faith will DEFINITELY have a huge impact on your kids - regardless of their 'official' religion!

yeah thank god its not legally binding hahaha i guess its just the whole concept...im not opposed to them being catholic and truth be told they will probably end up being catholic for me its just that i personally dont look at ppl based on their religion and see it as we all are part of 1 god so i see it as separating and almost like well if they're not catholic then its not right, as opposed to we're ALL children of god...i know thats not how they are saying it but just where my mind goes when i think about it lol.

FH and I went through the same exact thing - however, I'm Catholic and he's not. When we spoke to the Deacon about it - he was like 'I know that things change, and I know nothing is definite. No one is going to come yelling at you if you change your mind down the road, but we ask you to promise that you have the intention of bringing up your children Catholic'

I took this as. . they know that nothing is set in stone, but the diocese wants to hear that you have good intentions. I signed it, and we aren't sure what we are doing yet, but chances are they will brought up Methodist. FH wasn't happy about the signing thing either. . . .

yeah i know its not set in stone, the point was just the whole thing of it having to be catholic, its the whole principle...however, i havent been asked to sign any papers, and pre-cana went well and again they said it doesnt matter which religion we pick to raise our kids but as long as they practice something

I do agree though we pay sooooooo much for everyone else and tehn take issue for the church...its really not right. Then again- they have some nerve charging so much for a SACRAMENT!!!!

Espo: Your FH will have to sign the paper not you. And it is only required to have a full mass (which you are having right?)

As for the donation on top of the fee -- the fee is your donation or as they like to call it 'offering.'

Our is $650 but will be probably go up before we get married. That does not inlcude tips or additional music.
