shot his little brother in the head. they were fighting over a toy and he remembered his mom had a gun in her purse. He got it and put it to his head and shot him. HOW HORRIBLE. The 2 year old is fighting for his life.

I got chills reading this...

Does anyone else think there should be punishment for parents that have easily accessible guns in their homes? Isn't that endangering the welfare of a child in some way? It's a stretch, but hey, it's needed!

ABSOLUTELY!! That innocent baby would NOT have been harmed had the mother been RESPONSIBLE and LOCKED UP THE DAMN GUN!!!!!!!!!! SHE SHOULD be shot!!!!

As a Texan (which means I hear a lot of crud over the gun laws) I think it's terrible this happened, but like most I think the parents are to fault.

I’ve had guns around me all my life. I recall my dad taking us out to the ranch (yes, go ahead, laugh) and teaching us how to shoot the .22 shotgun. For protection it was told where it was and how to load it. But this was only after we were frightened half to death with my dad by the idea of actually killing something. Human or not!

When we got kids in the house (adopted when I was 16) the guns stayed. High and Hidden and mostly unloaded. When loaded, they were hidden and then locked besides. There really is never a NEED to keep a loaded gun in your house unless it’s a bad neighborhood. And it's not like we todl the kids 'Hey the gun's over here, alright?' But even then, I gotta question……

WHERE WAS MOM?

Just leave your purse with the gun in it so the kids can get to it. No biggie. Kids fighting in the other room, no biggie. Wow, the kid pulled the gun on the other!! IMAGINE THAT!?

I’m just amazed! Most guns have holsters that will keep small children annoyed and lose interest, my grandpa used to make his own from leather, put an unloaded gun inside and have us (then our smaller siblings) try to open it, I HATED IT! Then there’s the safety on the gun. Why was it not on? Heck she could have tossed her purse on a counter and it could have gone off, all it takes is a lipstick in the trigger.

Sorry to say this but this just ticks me off. Stupid people should NOT be allowed to own a gun! Stun gun? Pepper Spray, rubber pellet gun? Sure.. Real ammo? NO WAY!

One of my friends who use to live next door to me was given her own shotgun and taken to the shooting range when we were kids. She was in the 4th grade when they moved. It doesnt make you a bad person for that the fact that the gun was in a childs reach does.

Uhm..
I was in my teens

Not 4 !

ETA:
Ok, take that back. I was about 12 or so.
It was a shotgun. It's not a gun, it's easier to load. *shrug*

I can't stand shooting a gun, its load and shakes your whole body. But Dad was a believer in the idea of self protection and no one should EVER pick up a gun unless they are familiar with it, self defense or not. We are all pretty versed in the responsiblity of a gun, the effects it has. We are not hunters by nature (American Indian or not) and believe there's no need to kill uselessly. We are however not going to allow anyone to come into our home and take advantage of us.

I'm ok with a .45 colt, .357 ruger, .22 shotgun/handgun and 9mm smith&wesson. Doesnt mean I'd let a kid touch it!!!!!

i think teaching any child to shoot a gun is SENSELESS and WRONG!

What purpose would that serve?

Sorry but i think that is horrible...teaching a 12 year old how to shoot a gun, even if it is for protection!

And i agree with your last statement..a KID shouldn't touch a gun!

To each their own I guess.
My kids will mostly likely grow up with swords in the house.

Ronie...I totally hear ya. Also having friends that are from Texas...I know its a different mentally, she also was taught how to fire/load/clean a gun at 12 or 13.

I also have to say my dad was a cop. We knew he had his guns in the house from the time we were little kids. He would let us watch him as he cleaned his gun and he ALWAYS told us if we ever saw his gun around it is loaded & the safety is off. He told us to walk away & never touch it. Granted he stored it way up high, beyond our reach. But we always knew they were dangerous and thankfully there was never any problem.

For a mom to leave a loaded gun in her purse however with toddlers in the house is just ABSURD!

My sister lives in Texas and she has firearms in the house. It's very common in Texas to own firearms. It seems like the people that live down there have a different view of guns as well as a different level of respect for them. NY'ers think they are bad, period because of how they are handled and used by some. I can understand the TX point of view because that's how people were raised.

Just got off the phone with my dad. He saw this in the news. Said that woman should be gun slapped, her children taken away, her gun license (assuming she had one) taken away and given counseling before allowed to have her children back. He agrees with the idea of how STUPID it was to have it in her purse, unholstered and no safety.

He’s also a Child Advocate, which means he works for the judicial system with abused (or allegedly abused) children. He thinks she is an idiot, period.

Jim is proficient in sword play. I’m better with dagger work and guns. I’m aching to learn the staves but have no time. Both Jim and my own background are very clear about LEARNING and respecting weapons. Guns, knives, swords not even night clubs are toys. They are dangerous. To think otherwise is immature.

Guns? Jim knows nothing about. I left my snake charmer in Texas and it was the only shotgun I was really comfortable with. So I’m trying to pick up more swordsmanship skills. You gotta get close with a sword.

Mostly we fall back on good old fashioned defensive training military style. It’s not an offensive approach. Hear your opponent before he gets there, evaluate the situation and make choices of avoidance. Taking a confrontation is a chance, always. Avoidance is cleaner and ALWAYS safer. Extreme action is only taken in extreme danger. No gun, sword or bomb in the world will save your life if you’re stupid! Be prepared, be aware and pay attention.

*hops off soapbox*

Like I said earlier in this thread Texas is VERY different then NY when it comes with guns and such. Like I said before it doesn't make the parent a bad parent that they have guns and like I said before it makes them bad parents when they are DUMB and basically put it in the childs hands.

Jen that kid that killed his father with the sword did you hear the whole store with that? That father was a sick SOB and deserved it IMO his step son would come home and the father would hold a gun to his head EVERYDAY to 'keep him in check' Then he would show him pictures of the holocaust and the bodies going into where they would Hitler would burn them and then show him pictures of Hitler and make him salute him and Hitler. I think its to bad he didn't decapitate him.

Why is it i NEVER hear about a victim of any kind successfully defended themselves against an attacker with a gun or knife...
YET i hear ALL THE TIME about some dumb kid killing someone with daddy or mommy's gun

sorry the protection thing doesn't fly with me.
I understand that it is a way of life in Texas...imo doesn't make it right
