but some of the things people spend money on for a 1 day wedding is in my opinion ridiculous.
I can understand people who are BEYOND rich.. i dont think they know what to do with all that money.
But the average person ... I just don't get it.
i want my wedding day to be special and beautiful just like veryone else. But I put my priorities first. Marrying the person I love and buying a house to me is much more important and will last longer.
ok rant over, hope i don't offend anyone..

Re: I know i'm being terrible...
i totally agree with you but the thing is that everyone has a different idea of what her wedding is going to be like
so for example i will splurge on a VIennese hour - which some people think is not necessary
but then again there is a bunch of stuff that other people do that i personally think is a waste!

Nah its what you see as important and sometimes a home is more important then a wedding. Bravo!

Remember that everyone has different priorities and what is important to one person may not be important to another. I think that some weddings get out of control (JMO), but everyone is entitled to spend their money as they please.
(PS: I am NOT having an extravagant wedding, but hey to each their own).

I also agree. Sometimes people get so consumed with the actual wedding day, they forget about the important things like the rest of your lives together.

Re: I know i'm being terrible...
im with you..there are some things that i have to have..but i dont have to have the best of everything if i can not afford it..and all those little things..people arent going to even remember it..so why waste money..i dont remember much from weddings ive gone to except the food and entertainment..and thats really all your guest will remember too
dont go crazy on all the things like the wooden letters that seem to be a LIW trend..i mean you can get them cheap and all..but seriously..spend that money elsewhere..

Ok so it's not just me
I totally understand what was said about everyone has a different idea of what is extravagent and necessary.
We too are having a vienese hour (but that was because my parents insisted .. and they are paying for the RH) We didnt want one, but are okay with having one.. its 1 more hour to my wedding day, which i think makes more sense then expensive details.
But like you said its all in the interpretation!

oh yeah definitely - some things that people spend money on i am like i just dont get it!

Re: I know i'm being terrible...
I understand your point of view, but I don't think its fair of you to say it's a waste of money when you just said your parents are paying for the RH which is the most expensive part of a wedding. FH and I are paying for our entire wedding ourselves wihtout the luxury of help from our parents and I don't view that as a waste of money. I think its important to realize that some people don't have the help of their parents and in order to even have a wedding they have to spend money that could have gone towards a down payment on a house.

Re: I know i'm being terrible...
I agree with KimNAnthony above. You have to be careful saying things like that because a lot of people are paying for their weddings without the help of their familys and you should try not to judge what theyre spending their money on because it is obviously important to them.
I am not mad or the least bit offended by your comments. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinions. FH and I are one of those couples that are paying for just about the entire wedding by ourselves, and we already have a house and a nice life together. And I know there are a few things at my wedding that I could have chosen not to get and probably wont make a huge diff in the long run, but its something thats important to me so Im going with it.
And on that note, im off to church for our pre-marriage classes! Everyone have a great night and BE NICE!

Re: I know i'm being terrible...
I completely agree! I think its crazy some of the things I've seen people do, but to each their own. Yes, its only one day, but you do only get married once!! (well maybe not, but you get the point). If its something you've dreamed of doing or having that your wedding wouldn't be perfect without, then by all means go for it! Especially if you've got the money to do it. But I think each and every person has their own idea of what a perfect wedding is, and if yours is $100K, and mine is $10K then thats cool. I've been to weddings where the bride and groom probably didnt spend more than 5K on the whole thing, and there were definitely some very odd touches, but it was exactly what she had dreamed of. Its your day, so I say do it your way no matter what

I think you misunderstood. I dont think that people should not have a wedding or that a wedding is a waste of money. what i said does not apply to people spending a extra to have a certain flower they want in their centerpieces, or paying to have 2 photgraphers instead of one. I understand that people want certain things..
My point was that people seem to lose sight to what is important. Spending the rest of your life with your FH is important. Having a place to live is important.
I dont see the point or why it matters who is paying for what. I think it is great that so many of you are doing that on your own. FH and I always assumed we would have to pay for everything. My parents dont have the money, my parents had been saving for years, without me knowing. I'm lucky yes!
Sorry if i offended you. i was stating my opinion not degrading others for theirs.
I don't like when people say 'you should watch what you say on here' the point of this site is to get honest opinions, ideas and information. Not for everyone to sugar coat everything so that SOMEONE doesnt get offended.

Re: I know i'm being terrible...
i agree with you completely , and also the point that people have a right to spend what they want for their ideal wedding. honestly, i just want a small ceremony on the beach or water(even on LI!) and maybe a small restaurant reception. i want to focus on exchanging vows and everything else isnt that important to me. i know im on the extreme simplicity side of things so i dont suggest every bride to be like this, but this is what i wish i could do. FH wants larger wedding so thats what we are actually doing but i have your thoughts every single day.

Re: I know i'm being terrible...
I agree with KimnAnthony...when it comes to the boards its just better off not to judge what others do, because you'll think what one person does is wrong and theyll think what you do is wrong, you cant win...ANd honestly its not for anybody else to think it is right or wrong, as long as you are fine with the decisions that you make then thats what matters...Honestly its nobodies business how much someone else is spending.
Alot of people on these boards have also said negative things about others paying for your wedding, there was a thread about this not that long ago...They feel that if you two are adults and want to get married that you should pay for it yourself...ANd dont know how you personally feel about that or if you even read that but i am sure you dont like others to judge you for what you are doing.
For me personally i dont care how little or how much someone is spending, its their life, their money, it wont effect my life...As long as its something they are fine with then hey to each their own ya know.
Now i dont get offended by things but i will always say my side of things to give a different perspective...There are some things that yes I am splurging on and i am perfectly fine with that...I made a decision and i am comfortable with my decision...with the money i make i have a decision i can either go out shopping buying a bunch of clothes that honestly i do not need, i have clothes just here and there get things i do need. I dont feel the need to go out all the time and splurge, i can live without that and make this sacrifice for now...I have decided to put most of what i make towards the wedding, i have no regrets, no second guessing myself and i am fine with that...YOu can also look at it the other way...See FH is somebody who still wants to splurge, i can sit there and say uhmmm are you that materialistic that you need to constantly buy yourself that many clothes, hats, sneakers and whatever else he always has to buy, is it that hard to put that money away instead and put it towards savings. I dont mind sacrificing now, i am past the age where i feel the need to wear just designer clothes, and past OMG i gotta have that i want it, but really do i need it? I can buy clothes, how memorable will those clothes be to me? the wedding now yes it will be something that is 1 day but will be the most memorable day of your life and something you will always look back at, not that one night i went to the club and had a hot new expensive outfit. But this is my outlook.
Also its hard to say to others why are they spending so much on things...You don't know their situation, how much they make, if they're getting any help...Also you said about a house, there are couples who are getting married who already have a house, so they dont need to save for that...I own an apartment, not only that but this is what my dad does, he has a couple of apartments so i am not worried about the whole house thing...When we want to move into a house i can sell one.
Now im not offended by what you said, and im not attacking your views either but just showing you that its hard to judge people for this especially those we dont know and dont know their status...Now if its someone you're close to that you know their financial situation and are spending way more than they should then that is different
