DH is puerto rican and I am Irish, we are from different races, but not to my knowledge do we ever get any stares. Just came back from vacation with our friends, he is black and she is white, they did get a few stares, and she confided in me that her family is very upset that she is in a serious relationship with him. They are concerned for their future kids and so on....to me it is crazy that this still goes on....but with the gay weddings question, I thought I would ask, would you have issues if your white daughter was to marry a black man? thanks

Re: interracial weddings
It's hard for me to say, b/c more of my issue is with religion...it is very important to me that my future children marry within the Jewish faith. So, if he was black and Jewish, I'd be okay with it. If he was not Jewish, or even if it was a white guy who wasn't Jewish, I'd have issues, but I would eventually grow to accept it.
ETA: When I was a teen, I asked my mom if she would rather me marry a white guy who wasn't Jewish, or a black Jew. Her answer - Neither! So, I'm more easygoing than my parents, at least.
Also, I hope I didn't offend anyone who is in an inter-religious marriage...I believe everyone has to make that decision for him or herself. My opinion is just what I would prefer for my family.

yeah for me it's like this -- i have NOTHING against other races AT all, or religions for that matter, but no matter how times have changed, you can't tell me that prejudice is gone. My son or daughter marrying someone black would cause some issues for them, as well as their kids, and i'd be worried about that
for interacial couples that can make it work, i respect them, but i would have a problem if it were my own

Re: interracial weddings
honestly it wouldn't be a problem. I look at people for who they are not for the color of their skin. That said, my inlaws are puerto rican also and sometimes i think they are a little bit racist especially towards my sister's in law fiance that is black eventhough he is from honduras. I believe that sometimes they wished she was with someone else even though they have a kid together. Sometimes it's hard to get through people's stereotypes and for my husband and I it's been hard especially from my family's side since I'm Colombian and he is pr. It's changed a lot because we have a daughter and all but unfortunately they were people in my family that think they are better than anyone else.

I agree with you Don. Society is certainly not free from prejudice, and I wouldn't want my children and grandchildren to have to deal with the negativity that so often comes along with an inter-racial relationship.

No problem with it at all. DH and I are really open people. Both of us have dated outside of our race in the past.

Re: interracial weddings
I am a lover of love, hehe...if my daughter was in love I would support her through society's struggles.. My daughter should not marry her love because of society's ignorance. You only have 1 life to live, and I would never want my daughter living with what ifs, as long as there is respect for each other in relationships I will stand behind them 100%

Re: interracial weddings
here's the thing
if it were my daughter or son
i would advise against it, i would worry about it, i would make my case
but i wouldn't forbid it, because you just can't
in time, i would accept it, because if i didn't i'd lose my child and any grandchildren

Re: interracial weddings
yeah i mean, nothing is worth losing your child over
i mean, i may have views and i may not see eye to eye with the situation, but i'd have to accept it, because it's my child
it would take me a while to come to terms with

Re: interracial weddings
Well, first of all, if I have a daughter, she won't be white.
Isn't it funny the assumptions we make... as 'colorblind' as we all think we may be? (I know it's a hypothetical but I thought I'd point that out)
I am Latina and DH is Italian so our children will be mixed. We haven't experienced any hostility or stares because of our different race but then again, alot of people probably can't even tell. More like, when people find out DH gets the hi-fives for marrying a latina (still don't quite get that one and I'm afraid to find out) and I get the 'ok so he's white -- but he can dance?'
So, that said, if our daughter were to fall in love with a black man, who would we be to stop her?! Yes, they would probably endure more stares than us, but it wouldn't be an issue with us and we know it can be done. There are definitely some old schoolers in my family though (and probably his too) that would make comments but overall everyone would be very accepting.

its sad how these types of things occur. my fw parents forbid her to see me, so she left. so they havnt talked in 5 yrs.... we been having the time of our life and they will always wonder 'what if'
Religion is another thing that we are suppose to follow... What about being free to doing somthing postive with your life? Isnt this the message that should be conveyed.
Yes, we have gotten stare's and even people yelling at us. In particular black women. Some women see a nice black man (such as myself ) with a white girl and wonder why A. im not with a black girl, or B. how is he not 'a thug'. I know its a sterotype but i believe in it.... To answer the questions A, not many impressed me where i lived and B. i grew up in a good place.
Had i not been raised by good ppl in a good town, i wouldnt of turned out the way i was. I thank my parents for being the best for that.
For all the people that said yes, there would be a problem, im sadden by your choice but just like with my fw parents, its not my problem, its the person that see it as problem. Let them be free and dont hold prejudice anginst a group just cause they dont look like you. Had FW parents meet me, im sure they would of loved me like fw loves me but i was never given a chance. As much as i dont respect that decsion, its there lost at the end.
Sorry if i talked alot or got ppl upset but i wanted to share...after all, this is why we are here.
Don: to some extent, if i read your mind, i understand how you feel. heck i just might feel the same why but it all depends who the person is, where they live and what kind of people are they.

I was thinking the same thing~~~and wondering if the question was solely directed at white couples or if it was just a hypothetical like you suggested...
