Re: Is $4000 to much to spend on a wedding gown?
I'd say no amount of money is too much as long as you can afford it. I wouldn't put yourself in the poor house so that you can have the dream dress you've always wanted. My dress came out to about that much after alterations and everything. Its definitely your personal preference.

Re: Is $4000 to much to spend on a wedding gown?
It's your personal preference. I won't be spending that much on my gown because I rather use the money towards something else.

Re: Is $4000 to much to spend on a wedding gown?
Well my problem is that i was looking to spend around 1500-2000 on a gown. My fiance and I aren't getting much help fiancially with the wedding so I would be buying it myself. I feel guilty spending that much on a gown for one night but then I also think of it this way, I am working really hard to pay for my wedding I deserve the gown in a way. The gown I liked was about 4000 but they said if I speak to the manager she might take something off. Not sure how much that would be.

Re: Is $4000 to much to spend on a wedding gown?
At first blanch, I would say that it is too much. You will wear that gown for one day. Yes, it will be one of the most important days of your life, but there are many gorgeous gowns out there for a lot less. Sure, you can give it to your daughter but that assumes that she'll want it. Some might say that I spent too much on mine ($1000 from Demetrios), so it's all in the eye of the beholder.HOWEVER, if it's made in the US or Europe where wages are higher, then perhaps it's not too much. I learned recently that most gowns are made in China which is probably why my gown is priced the way it is.
Another consideration: if it is a high end gown (I assume it is) and you don't stain it, you can resell it. I live in Chicago and there is a store called WhiteChicago that resells 'once wed' dresses from high-end designers (Vera Wang, Monique Llhuiller, etc). It gets rave reviews from both sellers and buyers. I would assume that the NYC area has something similar. So, if you are open to selling it, you could 1- recoup some of the cost, 2- make another bride happy, 3- be eco-friendly!

I would say you are on crack to spend that much on a dress for one day for a few hours BUT if you make some $$$$$$$ then its the same as anyone of us buying 500-1k dress.

Re: Is $4000 to much to spend on a wedding gown?
I think it's a lot because there are many beautiful dresses out there for less than half of that, but it really comes down to how much money you have at your disposal and what your priorities are.Maybe you care more about the gown of your dreams and excellent photography than having your wedding during peak season. That could easily save you more than enough.
It's high, but there is a range for everything.
HOWEVER: shop around for prices before buying your dress! There is great variation between dress shops for the same dress from the same designer. Ex: Phillis from Bridal Elegance (?) and Lillettes (?) i believe were known for better prices. Doesn't hurt to bargain them down -- they all want a sale!

Re: Is $4000 to much to spend on a wedding gown?
i am in the same boat as you.....i havent gone dress shopping and since i know i can only spend a certain amount i am refusing to look at any dresses out of my budget (of course that is easier said than done b/c I probably wont like anything in my budget!
) for me - i rather spend 4 G's on my wedding band - its something that I'll wear everyday and in my mind I can justify it - the wedding bands that i like are about that much, if not more and i know that is where i rather spend $$$$
but if i had alot of money i would have no problem dropping 4 G's on a dress

i agree with the other girls and think its a personal decision. everyone is different. if you love the dress and cant find anything else - than go for it - you should do what makes you happy and if its the dress that you really want then do it!
good luck!!

Re: Is $4000 to much to spend on a wedding gown?
It depends who you're asking. My mom bought my wedding dress for me and I had a hard enough time convincing her that $1000 is a normal amount to spend so for me, yes, $4000 is too much
