FH and I, as a general rule always give $300 for a nightime wedding, and $250 for a daytime...Depending on the realtionship, we give more...Brother's wedding, we gave $600...best friends, $500. We are by no means wealthy, but my cousin told me that $300 is not enough? I always thought that that was genorous...please enlighten me, because now I'm confused!

I usually give the same night or day. Yes, the price is different, but that shouldn't affect what you give per say. I think $300 is a very nice gift.

I wish you ladies were invited to my wedding...
After planning a wedding I have vowed to do the following...To make sure that I give the min. of $200.00 for a wedding gift...and to always RSVP before the date...and if it is a person who I'm close to..or family...I will give more...

Re: Is this right?
I normally give $200 for the both of us at weddings...Its really all we can afford. Money shouldnt matter on a wedding day...its a celebration of a couples new beginning together, not a chance to give/get as much cash as you can to prove something (I dont mean this is a nasty way...). Dont worry about appearing cheap if you cant give alot, Im sure people would understand and wont hold it against you...

Me too. I only give $200 if we are both at the wedding. And if I'm in the wedding $300. BUT if the wedding is open bar then I give about another $50 more (so I leave the envelope unsealed until we get to the wedding...just to be on the safe side).

Re: Is this right?
I think your amounts are very generous. DH and I make a concerted effort to be as generous as we possibly can when we go to weddings. I usually start putting extra money aside when we get the invite. This helps us give between 300-500 hundred depending on whether its a friend or family.

Re: Is this right?
We always give about $150 pp depending on the relationship.
I heard that $85-$100 pp was going rate. (some ppl do more- some do less)
If someone decides to pay $200 per plate for their wedding- thats their problemo.
They know they are most likely not going to get that $ back.
It is what you can afford really. I wouldnt expect any given amount from ppl, but always give more knowing what weddings cost. Not that im rich- but if i couldnt - i wouldnt. ya know

That is the perfect amount. We usually give b/w $300-$400. If it is someone very close, like a family member we may give more.

Re: Is this right?
We give between 200 and 250 and being a young working couple that will have to suffice. 300 is a generous gift. There is no set amount you need to give. Some of my friends who brought a date only gave 150 and that was fine with me because i knew they couldn't afford more. Give what you can afford.

Re: Is this right?
as a general rule they say you should give enough to cover your plate. So typically we assume its about 110- 150 so we try to give 250-300

Just curious, why are you giving $50 less for an afternoon wedding?

Re: Is this right?
i always give at least 300 which does not even cover plates these days but if it is a closer family member or we are in the bridal party we give at least 500....
i do follow the rule that if i recieved a gift i give what i got (so if i recieved 200-250 from a couple that is what they are recieving as well) (and if i recieved more then 300 then obviously i would give more)
but when dealing with 'gifts' it goes by what you can afford and feel comfortable giving....
