Is this RUDE...

Original post by pigs222seal

Is it rude to ask the grromsmen to wear yarmulks even though they are not Jewish. Keep in mind we are having an interfaith wedding. Please be honest...thank you.

I think so.. I would probably be offended because it's asking me to represent a religion I'm not a part of especially since its interfaith and multiple religions are being honored.

ETA: Making it an option probably isn't bad, but I think if it were a requirement I would be bothered.

Agree...

i agree also, i think everyone will be happy knowing that they have the choice to either wear one or not. good luck!!

I wouldn't like it. As someone else said, its asking me ot represent a religion I don't believe.

look back in the post and it was explained very nicely- a yarmulka does NOT represent judism- it's a sign of respect

yarmulka does not equal a cross or holy water

I have never heard my DH complain when we go to jewish weddings-

I did look at all the posts . The original poster asked for an honest opinion. And I would feel uncomfortable and that is my honest opinion. Again JMHO

I don't see the connection between holy water and a yarmulka

I'm not sure I see the connection between holy water and a yarmulke either... but I don't know much about holy water. However, honestly if that were what was usually required of every person who walks in the door of the church (as is true of a yarmulke in many synogogue's, at least for men) then yes, I would do it. And OF COURSE I would stand and sit, etc, at the appropriate times. How unbelievably rude would it be to just sit there while everybody else around you is standing or kneeling?

Like I said, it has nothing to do with whether or not it's your own faith, and everything to do with simply being respectful of others.

My aunt and her husband (and subsequently, their kids) are Jehovah Witnesses....at my great-grandmother's catholic funeral, they attended even though they were NOT supposed to set foot inside the church....and they stood and bowed their heads at all the approriate times even though really they weren't supposed to...but they kept their eyes open and didn't 'pray' with the rest of us...i only knowthis because i was 8 months pregnant and the baby was kicking so hard it tickled and i kept looking around to find an exit so i wouldn't laugh. In order to respect a faith (whether it's a yarmulke, bowing or standing...) doesn't mean you are condoning or converting, simply respecting it. Quite honestly, if a non-Jewish guest didn't wish to wear one, he'd simply not take one or take it but never put it on...but i doubt anyone would hold it against him.

When we went to bar/bat mitzvahs.. only those of Jewish faith used to wear them. I'm having 3 Jewish bridesmaids in my wedding (I'm catholic), I'm not asking them to kneel, accept eucharist, etc...

you can't accept the eucharist unless you have made you communion

All men are supposed to wear yarmulkes in temple, not just the Jewish men. It's a sign of respect. You don't denounce your faith by wearing a yarmulke in temple. It's simply showing respect in temple as is covering your shoulders.

Being that I am not Jewish, I would rather be given the option then forced to wear one. I think your guests would like the same option.

I don't think this is rude, particuarly if the GROOM, the man they are standing up for is Jewish... it is out of respect for him and his family. Also, if the wedding is in a synagouge, I would have the mean wear one out of respect.

My FSIL just got married to a Jewish guy. Groomsmen that were Jews (the grooms brothers and cousins) wore them... the groomsmen that were realyl standing up for the bride (her brothers) did not wear them (the bride is Catholic). It was an interfaith wedding.

Jeez...you're not asking them to convert. Do you think it's rude when Chinese people ask you to take off your shoes in their house? You do it out of respect for the other person's beliefs.

Correct. Jewish people cover their heads as a show of respect to G-d, when they are in a synoguoge or another 'holy' place.

Wearing a yarmulke is not symbolic of representing a religion. Like I said, it's a show of respect. It's not sacreligious for a non-jew to wear a yarmulke.

I don't think it's rude, but then again I'm Jewish and we're only having one non-Jewish BM and that's my FBIL.

As far as awkward religious moments, how about watching nearly everyone cross themselves over my dead grandfather's body..and he was Jewish. There was a Jewish star over his coffin but that didn't stop anyone and what were we to say?
