****** I realized I didn't put 'maybe' on the poll...just use 'what is this' as maybe*****
What do you think of this?
Fh and I have had a few heated deabtes over the circumcison issue, and we don't even plan to have kids for years.
The reason it came up again recently is because on our favorite show (penn and teller bullsh--), they had an episode on it, and they actually showed circumcisons taking place. EW. It was SO scary.
My take on it is that it's barbaric, it's completely uneccesary and it causes under strain on a baby. They're now saying that there's no medical reason for it (just take a shower!), and I just can't see removing it for no reason. I'm not going to go into surgery to have my appendix out if it isn't enflamed. Should I also have my newbors undergo tonsilectemies? I mean ONE DAY it MIGHT be a problem....To me I don't understand the purpose of it. Also, some people say it removes 25% of highly sensitive skin, so it also takes away ptential sexual pleasure, etc etc.
I know this has been a long standing religious tradition for some 'cutting' the covenant. However, there is a LOT of really barbaric stuff in the old testament, and we're better off having left it behind, maybe this is one of those things that western culture should wake up and realize is barbaric and uneccesary...
What are your thoughts?

A lot of italians i know pierce their childs ears before their daughter is even 1 years old!!! Is that wrong too?
mine were done when I was 20 days old! (A week before my baptism) - I'm so glad they were done early, obviously, I don't remember ANY pain!
Mine too! I was pretty young..maybe 6 mos. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. I think it's a LOT different than circumcision though. It's not a surgery and you can always just let the holes close.
ETA: its just another thing that's so socially acceptable that we don't even think about it

Well what i don't want for my child is to think he has to change himself to be accepted and loved. I want him to be proud of who he is. You're always going to be different for something. If he's circumcised, then maybe he'll still have a big nose, or webbed feet or a **** or whatever.
I think it's important no matter who you are to be confident in who you are and how god made you. You can't protect your kids from everything
i agree with what you are saying but imo it is hard being a kid and if i can help my child in certain ways i will.
I do not think a child should have to feel inadequate because mommy doesn't agree with how he/she feels.
Exactly. Ideally all children would be accepted exactly the way they are but sadly that is not the world we live in and I'm not going to make my child suffer in an attempt to try and stop the vicious cycle or the inevitable.
Also, grade school children don't have to actually see each other's penises to know that they are different and feel that they are different. Children talk.
And, I don't know about anyone else but I've gone years without wearing earrings and my piercings that were done when I was just a few days old have NEVER closed.

mine have never closed either..and i too went 2 years not wearing earrings!
either way there is NO reason to do it other than cosmetically.
Some might say that putting holes in a baby's ears is BARBARIC

Re: Kind of a parenting questions, but CIRCUMCISON
I'm not saying ear piercing is right either. But I don't think it's as big a deal on either sise. it's not such a hot button issue. If kids don't have thier ears pierced it's no big deal, they cna get it done relatively painlessly when they're older. I think circumcision is a MUCH more important decision. I can't imagine someone getting it done as an adult, and once it's done it can't really be undone..and I think it ha a much bigger effect one way or another than ear piercing. So I think it's a really important decision for parents to make for thier children and shouldn't be overlooked. I don't think ear piercing is such a big deal. if you think it's bad to do it to a kid, then don't, and they can always get it done later...if you don't think it's bad, then do it. I don't see any repurcussions either way. And you're right of course it's not necceasry, but no one will say it is, so there's not evena question. Circumcision is medically unneccesary, but many people think it is for a variety of reasons.

My dad actually wouldn't let me get earings till I was about 8 and I begged!!!!! He said if god wanted to put wholes in your ears he would have put them there.

I'm with you on that one Red. Even though I think it looks adorable, there is no way I will pierce my daughter's ears until she is old enough to ask me for it, as I asked my parents at age 8.

Mary~
well i thought your stance was about circumcisions being: 1. not necessary 2. barbaric 3. to do for self esteem reasons is wrong 4. to alter your childs appearance unnecesarily is wrong
IMO this applies to eye pircing just as much as circumcision...EXCEPT THAT:
getting your ear pieced as an adult isn't MORE painful!

Off topic alert!!! Circumcision morphing into ear piercing...
IMO it isn't off topic at all...
IMO it applies to the reasons that were stated by people for NOT getting circumcised...
YET ear piercing is acceptable...
How is that off topic?

Because the question posed by the thread was Will/Did you circumcise your son - not do you think it's acceptable to pierce a baby's ears!

It just seemed like it was headed towards 'I got my ears pierced at 2 months' 'well, I was 4 months' etc, etc.
And if anyone cares...I was 9 months (but not sure where the Italian connection comes in, even though I am)

Re: Kind of a parenting questions, but CIRCUMCISON
I have yet to see any one post a study of the horrible effects of circumcision on today's male children.
And for the sake of all that is good and holy, lets just all hope we have girls. Enough is enough!

I'm with you Leslie...LOL
but seriously, I didn't ASK about ear piercing. I don't care. Are you trying to find some kind of hypocrisy in this, as usual? I'm asking for pros and cons of circumcision, not ear piercing. If I say I won't pierce my daughter's ears either, will that make you happy? I haven't even thought about that yet, because it's really not impoirtant and it won't amount to much of a discussion with FH because I'm sure he'll go along with whatever I decide. We're discussing circumcision. I just feel like anytime anyone posts something, you try to compare it to another post, or find something where you can be like 'AH HA! What a hypocrite' like you did with janice's responses on the sex w/o love thread.

Yes ...it was brought about about social norms!!!
1. YOU brought up web feet and nose jobs...now that has A LOT TO DO WITH CIRCUMCISIONS...AND I AM THE HYPOCRITE...YEA OK! YOU are the one who brough up diffreent scenarios...SO I DID TOO! SO DON'T yell at me when YOU STARTED IT! JUST because YOU DO NOT LIKE IT!
2. AND i brought ear piecing because it is VERY MUCH LIKE what you were describing circumcision...UNNECESSARY ...done purly because the parent LIKES IT The fact that you feel like a hypocrite ...well that is on YOU!
3. I compared ONE POST to another...THAT WAS IT...so to generalize my posting like that is ABSURD! OTHER THAN THAT THREAD MARY WHERE ON HERE DO I COMPARE POSTS? AND WHERE do i usually try to find the hypocrasy in threads....
SORRY HUN THAT IS YOUR JOB AROUND HERE...
You wanna point finger MARY take a long hard look in the mirror sweetie...before talking to ME ABOUT HOW I POST
