Learn from People's Mistakes

Original post by Bridex100

Ever been to a wedding and think you don't want THAT to happen at your own wedding? I'm going to start a thread...

I've been to weddings where:

-Bridesmaids' dates were seated with the 'random' table. It was so obvious that he didn't know anyone. He should have been seated with his date.

-The acoustics were poor during the ceremony so none of the guests could hear the vows.

-There was no clear gift area. We didn't know where to put their envelope so we placed it on the table where we got our table numbers.

-Big centerpieces that blocked the view from seeing the bride and groom as well as blocking the view from the people sitting in front of you.

-Getting a tacky favor at the end. Please don't hand out cheap tacky favors that no one appreciates. It's better not to hand a favor out at all.

-Awkward time in between ceremony and reception. The guests have to 'kill' these hours and often have nowhere to go. Yet it's not enough time to plan something in between.

i think its very easy to say that you would never do what another bride did, what you would consider a 'mistake.' but consider this, there will be guests at your wedding that think some of the things you do are mistakes. and what bride wants to hear that?

we had about a 2 hour time period b/w the church and reception. what our guests did? i honestly did not care, i didn't make it my business to have something planned. they are adults and can care for themselves.

as far as what favor is tacky, if you really want to make a statement, i suggest making a donation in lieu of favors. put your $$ to a good cause.

not really. just trying to get people to look at it another way.

there are things that happened at my wedding that people may not have liked, but i don't give a crap. it just means that they won't do it at theirs. i can get over it.

According to theknot.com one of the complaints guests have about weddings is the lengthy time between ceremony and reception.

theknot 'Do Not Do' list

There are more there...

Reducing the length of time between ceremony and reception is one of the gripes by guests.

It's the same gripe for me, I have always skipped weddings where there is more than 3 hours between ceremony and reception. I love weddings but I also do not want to spend a whole day at any wedding....

Thanks! Thats a great article! I want to make sure my guests are 100% happy before anything else, so this really helped. I enjoy brutal honesty.

I would be pi$$ed if I went to a wedding that had a Vegan Menu! Yick! I would wind up not eating much and leaving hungry. I feel like I am planning my wedding so my guests have a good time and enjoy the food too .

It depends on if you have 4-star food - trust me - people have gotten together on my nehalf and had a vegan menu, and they were sooo impressed woth it, they loved the experience - ALSO - at my e-party, we had a vegan table and a regular food table - guess what?

The guests ate ALL of our vegan food, and left none for us!!!

We had an excellent vegan caterer - its easy to think vegan food is raw veggies and tofu - but trust me - those people did not think that when they were eating our food - I was too busy laughing to even get pissed that I couldnt eat at my own e-party!!! There were over 300 people there!

Re: Learn from People's Mistakes

One of my very closest friend (not from the tri-state area) did 3 things that I would never have done and would encourage you all to take note

1) The Money Dance--Yes, the time of the night where you literally have to pay to dance with the bride or groom.

2) She was the 'little sister' getting married before the big brother and had her brother stand in a pig trough as she danced around him.

3) Not enough room for all the guests to eat in the main ballroom. About 2 tables worth of guests got to eat BY THEMSELVES in the bar area of the country club. It wasn't like they had music or anything piped in, they just got a 'private room' so they wouldn't be able to enjoy any of the speeches, or even the presence of the bride and groom. Admittedly the bride said she had invited too many guests.

Another friend of mine (again, not Tri-State area) had a 6:30 ceremony, 7:30 reception with no dinner. Appetizers (unfortunately it wasn't 'heavy' appetizers, I wish it had been) were the only thing served and they took them away 1 hour into the reception. I have never been so hungry! EVERYONE thought we'd be getting dinner because 6:30 is DEFINITELY dinner time.

I love my friends dearly, and they are great people, but I don't have to love every decision they make to appreciate them as people. They both had really fun and great aspects to their weddings as well, but this is a thread about 'mistakes.' I'm sure my wedding had some glaring flaws to them too, they just aren't members of LIW to share them!

Re: Learn from People's Mistakes

I just remembered something awful from my brother's wedding!

My little sis and I were bridesmaid's and the photographer wanted to pose a pic where all the bridesmaids were on the floor around him, looking up as if he were Elvis or something. And he wanted another pic where all the bridesmaids were 'tearing' at his clothes.

I was only 18 and I remember thinking how gross it was and my sister and I were complaining that we should not have to do it. Fortunately the bride agreed.

If posed shots are your thing... try to keep it so it isn't just Gross.
