Let's start a thread- The stupidest comments you have gotten from people about your wedding....

Original post by princess99

It seems like since I got enagaed people have said the stupidest things to me ....
1.Why a 2 year engagment?
2. Why can't we have beer in the bottles ?
3.That does not look like calligraphy, it looks like computer art!
4.You send out your invites on the early side... March is so far away! (Hello- we are half way thru January!)

Feel free to add on, this may be fun! And a good way to vent!

oh and another-

This is just recently after i got engaged, when my aunt sees me, Of course I am overjoyed at being engaged.
First she asks me to take my ring off, then she holds it up to the light as if she is some kind of gematolgist, lord knows what she could be looking for.and then she proceeds to say' oh its not bad'.......not bad, you have gotta be kidding me.
Could you believe the nerve of this broad. Mind you her ring was bought on the HSN for 45 bucks. And she only finally got her man to marry her because he wants to stay in the country.

One of my BMs did the same thing - examining the ring like she was some sort of Gemologist! But she went on and on 'Oh the diamond is such good quality' 'Oh, Adam you did such a good job choosing this - it has 4 prongs and the sapphires are very secure' blah blah blah. Then again, this is the girl who sings along with songs she's never heard before. Don't ask. We love her anyway.

My mother said when we said we were engaged:
' So does this mean you're getting married?'

Huh????

She's been great, it think she was just in shock.
Oh yeah she & FMIL both said ,'How come?'
also
I think they meant how come now, ( we've been together over 4 years,) I think they thought we were perpetual daters.

Well, I'll jsut hope that's what they meant.

Now FMIL says all the time, cousin & cousin's girlfriend woulds be engaged by now if they had jobs. I feel like saying ''How come?'

Re: Let's start a thread- The stupidest comments you have gotten from people about your wedding....

One day before my wedding, my idiot BM calls up DH and tells him he forgot to ask off work on our WEDDING day. You know, the day he has known about for over 2 years?

BM: 'I am going to work the morning of your wedding, and then meet you at the church.'
DH:
BM: 'Why are you making such a big deal over this? Your wedding is not until 1p, I have plenty of time. You are being overdramatic.'

He is lucky one of our GM took over and convinced him he should not go to work the day of our wedding. If he had said that to me, we would have been in the church for a funeral not a wedding

And, the ever popular ILs (who are from upstate NY) being afraid to come to NYC for the wedding. DHs cousin actually told him he wished he could make it, but he would not come to NYC because 'people get robbed there, and I am afraid of what will happen to my car'. unbelievable. Even after all this time, that still annoys me

Re: Let's start a thread- The stupidest comments you have gotten from people about your wedding....

Well there’s the one REALLY stupid ones and hurtful.

One week after we booked our location:
Dad: “Well you really don’t need me there, you and Jim should just get married and be happy, no need for a wedding, really”
Me: “WHAT!!!!!!!!! You are going to be at my wedding and you WILL walk me down the aisle if it means I have to drag your dead body with me. How can you say it doesn’t matter.. you’re my FATHER for F*cks Sake!”
- He has NEVER said a word like that since then. I believe he’s driving from Iowa to New York city. He hates airplanes.

One week after we picked the date and told my brother: (mid July 2003)
Bro: “I don’t think I can get those days off. I probably can’t make it.”
Me: “You’re my only sibling with the same blood lines. My one and only older brother. I gave you a year and a half notice for my wedding and you can’t make it?”
- I haven’t said a word about it since. My father says my brother will come. It really hurts my feelings.

Here’s something that *I* apparently said that was stupid
In regards to my father not coming:
“You don’t get it, I don’t care if no one shows up. The ONLY people who ‘have’ to be there is YOU, me, Jim and the priest. That’s it. I don’t care if we get married in a barn you WILL be there!”
Reaction: My stepmother then immediately assumed that this meant she was not invited to the wedding. She got all stiff lipped and prissy. “No it’s fine, you don’t want me there, you just said only you, Jim, the priest and your father. Obviously I’m not important enough to be there”
The truth is, I don’t want her there, but I know she will be there. So my reply:
“You’ll get an invitation, I promise”

Feels great venting

OMG are you sure he isn't one of our GM? Ours called the night before our e-party after we gave the final head count and my parents had paid and says to FH 'Sorry dude but I was going to call in sick so I didn't take a day off - but now I am training and can't get the day off so i won't be coming' FH FLIPPED out on him since the party was in APRIL and he knew about it since DECEMBER!

He called the day of and said OH now we (he and his wife) are now coming - they should up 3 hours into a 4 hour luncheon party

Re: Let's start a thread- The stupidest comments you have gotten from people about your wedding....

Why such a long engagement?

WHAT You're not getting married in a church!!! (we're getting married at the hall)

You should really get a WHITE dress! (my mom, my dress is ivory)

You HAVE to wear a blusher when you walk down the aisle! (my mom)

You CANNOT walk down the aisle alone!

You CANNOT take pictures before the ceremony! It is bad luck and you will get divorced!! (said my mom and grandmother and some others... ironically who followed this advice but are divorced themselves)

You're too young (we will have been together 7.5 years when the wedding comes)

When my fiance was getting some information about buying a house he was told numerous times 'Get a pre-nup, she will try to take everything from you' (OK, I am paying for half of everything)

At a bridal expo: A woman about 35 years old and her mother were ahead of us on line to get in. This b!tch says to her daughter 'Look at those two behind us. They are so young. They should get an education first! She must be pregnant thats why they are rushing into it' She was not even whispering - talking out loud and looking right at us. I would have knocked this lady out if my FH did not stop me. We do have COLLEGE DEGREES and very good jobs and are paying for the wedding ourselves! And also MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS!!!!!

LMAO...I have been laughing for the last 30 mins. People at work must think Im crazy.

Ok I have a few:

MOH asked me how much we were paying pp and when I told her, within seconds I can hear her calculator going. Then she says 'I can't to see this wedding.' She then proceeds to say that she spend way less. I'm thinking well DUH!!! You got marred in Memphis and has a buffet reception, no CH or alcohol.

My family is from Haiti, so she asks me if I am going there for our honeymoon.
Me: Why would I go there on my HM.
MOH: bc that's where your roots are.
Me: then why the He$$ didn't you go to Africa for your HM?

What is it about having a wedding that makes people think your finances are fair game? in a normal, day to day situation, would you ever ask someone how much they make or what they are paying in rent/mortgage? NO!!! why do people always ask 'how much are you paying pp? its crazy, and no matter what your reply is, they still have a comment to make, one way or the other.

From a guy I work with:

'You should take some of the $ you are saving for your wedding and get breast implants'

Yep. He said that.

A secretary at work said to me'You're doing this all wrong!' When my son got married, we paid for half and his fiancee's parent s paid for the other half. You shouldn't be paying for a thing'! I was like'excuse me, what planet are you living on? Have you any idea how much weddings cost these days? I guess your son was lucky. My parents gave me what they could afford.. I was sooo mad! But its not enough to pay for a big wedding, plus I never expected them to pay for everything. those days are long gone!

Yeah I've gotten a version of this.

'So, how much money does he make?' As if after 3 years of dating this all of a sudden became important.

When I say that I and I alone am paying for the wedding...
'Get a prenup.. he could ruin your life.'
Really? Just cause I make more? Even though HE has all the stock options?

People assume they know SOOO much more than us about our future weddings.

'Marriage means fights, try to make up in 48hours' Wow,.. should I be writing this down?

Some well meaning.. some not.. still moronic statements all!

Theres one I forgot to put.. the day we got engaged (Valentines Day) we went over to see my mom.. I had the ring on and no one noticed.. I just sat quiet and waited... finally it came.. So max what did you get for vday this year?? I smiled and stuck out my hand.. my Mom- ohmigod its gorgeous.. My aunt.. wow Joe how much did that cost you? he didnt answer b/c he thought it was rude.. and my mom and aunt must have asked 5 times untill he finally answered. Then all of a sudden my mom goes wait you didnt ask me if you could marry my daughter - FI - I asked her father (ohgod big mistake .. parents are divorced and HATE eachother) she flipped out and told him to go Fu*k himself and now hes not good enough to marry me and she raised me not my father and he should have asked me.. he tried so hard not to fight but she was being a total b*tch ( Nice day of engagement right?!)
Anyway he apologized and asked for my hand in marriage lol after we were engaged and now all is well ... lmao

Oh yeah- we had been dating nine years when we got engaged so we heard:

1. 'its about time'
2. 'you are good, I would not have waited that long- I would have left him by now'
3.'you know people who date for a long time and then FINALLY get married end up getting divorced rather quickly.
